Opera Carolina
OperaCarolina.org
Opera Carolina Sets the Stage for a Season of Wonders 2015-16 will bring beloved operas and one U.S. premiere
O
pera Carolina’s new season includes four murders (in the same night!) and two suicides, yet Maestro James Meena promises the season is a fun one. “From Beethoven to Romeo and Juliet to a U.S. premiere of Rachmaninoff’s fi st opera, this is a season we’re incredibly proud to share,” said Meena, Opera Carolina’s general director and principal conductor. “Die-hard opera fans will be transfi ed, but there’s plenty to entice newcomers, too.” Opera Carolina was a newcomer itself – to the Elizabeth neighborhood – last fall. The move to a historic house in one of Charlotte’s oldest and best-preserved neighborhoods was a turning point for the 66-year-old organization. To become further rooted in Elizabeth, Opera Carolina will move its third annual Art • Poetry • Music to a new home: Halton Theater on Central Piedmont Community College’s main campus. Art • Poetry • Music opens the new season on Sept. 12 with a celebration of opera, visual art and the spoken word. Then, Opera Carolina brings the vocally demanding Fidelio to the stage Oct. 17, 22 and 25. Beethoven’s only opera is a story of oppression and freedom. The new production reimagines this masterpiece behind the Berlin Wall shortly before its 1989 fall. Metropolitan Opera tenor Andrew
Richards and soprano Wendy Bryn Harmer star in the high-tech production. Next up, on Jan. 24, 28 and 30, is everyone’s favorite tragic love story: Romeo & Juliet. Charles-Francois Gounod’s composition of Shakespeare’s classic tale commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death. Opera Carolina’s new production features rising stars – tenor Jonathan Boyd and soprano MarieEve Munger – as the star-crossed lovers. Opera Carolina will create a new set – but one that honors tradition – for this co-production with Virginia Opera and Toledo Opera. The season closes with an exciting U.S. premiere: Aleko, Rachmaninoff’s fi st opera. Aleko will be presented with Pagliacci by Leoncavallo on April 10, 14 and 16. Each opera is just one hour, but both are filled with j alousy, revenge and – of course – bloodshed. Xu Zhong, musical director of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, will conduct the double bill. Look for opera in Elizabeth, uptown ... and maybe on your block. Opera Carolina’s Street Opera brings performances to unexpected venues including small theaters, churches and even coffee shops. Learn more about this transformative season – made possible by a generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Private bank – at operacarolina.org.

Special thanks to Fred Hanson for his contribution in mounting this production of Pippin. THE PIPPIN TOUR IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF RANDY WEEKS (1955–2014). This touring production of Pippin began its magical journey at the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado under the guidance of Randy Weeks. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude. He was such a fan of our show and part of it belongs to him. Sadly on Thursday, October 9, the theatre lost one of its fiercest advocates, one of our finest colleagues, and a dear friend. We are honored to be a part of his extraordinary legacy!

10 Fun Facts About Summer Pops
T
he Charlotte Symphony’s Summer Pops series has been a popular Charlotte tradition since 1983. Here are a few things you might not know about the annual concerts:
1
The Charlotte Symphony has a long history of performing outdoor concerts. The CSO’s first outdoor performance was in 1932 at Independence Park, the city’s oldest public park. More than 3,000 people attended to hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and the Overture from Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner.

Symphony Park, home of the Summer Pops series, opened in June 2002.
Symphony Park hosts the Charlotte Symphony’s popular Summer Pops series.
7 8 9 10
The first selection ever played in Symphony Park was “Liberty Fanfare” by John Williams. The Park is 7.4 acres, including a 1.7-acre lake.
The stage floor at Symphony Park is made of Brazilian Ipe wood, a material that is harder than mahogany.
WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks” host Mike Collins was the first Summer Pops emcee.
“Celebrate America” is the CSO’s Independence Day concert held on July 3 each year.
The stage area at Symphony Park is 90 feet wide by 60 feet deep.
Charlotte magazine named Summer Pops one of the “50 Things Every Charlottean Should Do!” Summer Pops concerts begin at 7 p.m. every Sunday in June, plus July 3. Tickets are $12 on Sundays and $16 on July 3. Summer Passes (for all five concerts) are $48.
The CSO creates digital program books for each Summer Pops concert, available on the CSO app.
