ONCE: The Musical With Mass Appeal
T
creating a feast for the eyes and ears. Here are three more reasons this show is not to be missed:
here’s something special about ONCE. You sense it the minute you walk into the theater and see audience members mingling onstage and buying drinks at the authentic-looking Irish pub, which also serves as the show’s set. And then the music starts. That haunting, gorgeous music. If you were lucky enough to catch the Broadway tour in Fall 2014 when it played to packed houses in Charlotte, you’ll remember the story of a talented Dublin street performer who makes ends meet by repairing vacuums. With a broken heart, he’s just about to give up his dream of writing and performing music when a chance encounter with a mysterious and lovely Czech woman leads to an incredible musical collaboration. Their connection deepens and the resulting music is sensational; their relationship, however, remains much more complex than a simple boy-meets-girl romance. Music is front and center in the Broadway production, as talented actormusicians play their own instruments,
1
Charlotte loved ONCE the last time around! The Gaston Gazette said “ONCE brought something fresh, real and original to the world of theater. It’s a show that even the non-musical lover would enjoy, just because it’s so different.”
2
This is the perfect show for anyone who loves music! Boasting incredible, breathtaking music and lyrics from Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, ONCE features the Oscar®-winning song “Falling Slowly” as well as elements of folk and rock throughout.
3
A triumphant feat for any Broadway show, ONCE won eight Tony Awards® in 2012, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction and Best Orchestrations. It also won the Grammy Award® for best musical theater album in 2013.

Opera Performs U.S. Premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Aleko Russian opera paired with the famous Pagliacci

including Paul Badura-Skoda, Lazar Berman, Sergiu Commissiona, Michel D’alberto, Philippe Entremont, Pavel Kogan, Vladimir Krainev and Hiroko Nakamura. Maestro Xu has won numerous prestigious international piano competitions, including the first Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, The Santander Paloma O'shea International Piano Competition, The fifth Tokyo International Piano Competition and The 10th Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. s if the U.S. stage premiere of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s first opera, Aleko, isn’t enough, Opera Carolina pairs this unique offering with one of the most famous operas of all – Pagliacci. The new production stars North Carolinian and Fort Mill resident Jeff Gwaltney as the betrayed husband, Canio, in Leoncavallo’s beloved Pagliacci. Directed by New York City Opera Renaissance’s new leader, Michael Capasso, the new production features the U.S. debut of Maestro Xu Zhong, music director of China’s most prestigious orchestra and opera company, The Shanghai Philharmonic and Opera. “This innovative production is a shining example of Opera Carolina’s commitment to excellence; to engaging great artists who increasingly live in our region; and to presenting a balanced and interesting repertoire to opera lovers and first-timers alike,” said Opera Carolina General Director James Meena. The stories of Aleko and Pagliacci are not dissimilar. Each chronicles with jealously, love and devotion betrayed, and murder. “Opera has always been a civilized way to enjoy sex and violence,” according to Meena. “The pathos of real human emotions heightened by the great music of Rachmaninoff and Leoncavallo allows us to empathize as we’re horrified by the events unveiling on stage.” As one of most internationally renowned Chinese pianists and conductors, Xu Zhong has enjoyed great collaborations with the most world-renowned musicians,

7 Reasons to Love Boyz II Men
T
he esteemed R&B group Boyz II Men joins the Charlotte Symphony for one night only on Saturday, March 12, in Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Here are some reasons why the group is so popular.
1
They brought the ’90s some harmony. "Cooleyhighharmony," the group’s 1991 debut album, featured the hits “Motownphilly,” “End of the Road,” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.”
2
Boyz II Men perform with the Charlotte Symphony in March.
Awards, awards … awards. Over the last two decades, the group has earned four Grammy Awards®, nine American Music Awards, nine Soul Train Awards, three Billboard Awards, and a 2011 MOBO Award for outstanding contribution to music.
5 6
They keep on going. In 2011, the group marked its 20th anniversary by releasing a new album, fittingly titled “Twenty.”
3
The group gives back. Boyz II Men House lends support to individuals and organizations that focus on improving quality of life and unlocking human potential, while contributing to the health and vitality of those less fortunate.
4
The full package. Boyz II Men recently teamed up with boy-band phenomena New Kids on the Block and 98 Degrees for the highly anticipated Package Tour.
They’re arts guys. The four (now three) members of Boyz II Men met in 1988 at The High School of Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia.
7
Clout. Megastars from Justin Timberlake and Usher to Justin Bieber and Beyoncé cite Boyz II Men as their musical influences.

Three Reasons Not to Miss Little Mermaid
ive into the underwater world of Charlotte Ballet’s Little Mermaid! The Hans Christian Andersen tale about a curious mermaid longing to leave her ocean home, comes to life with imaginative choreography from Mark Diamond. Join Charlotte Ballet in March and venture with the Little Mermaid as she travels from her underwater home to the majestic Prince’s Palace! Here are three reasons not to miss this show.
2. Features the professional dancers of Charlotte Ballet Charlotte Ballet is made Photo by Peter Zay up of 28 extraordinary professional dancers from around the world. They live and work in Charlotte, rehearsing at the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in uptown. The dancers’ typical rehearsal day begins with a 1.5-hour ballet class each morning, followed by six hours of rehearsal.
Choreographer Diamond is collaborating with set designer Howard Jones to create the perfect atmosphere for Little Mermaid. Act I of the ballet takes place under the sea, with projections designed to transport the audience into a magical underwater world, with a cast of sea creatures including sparkling seahorses, slithering eels and tumbling starfish. Charlotte Ballet Director of Costumes Aimee J. Coleman is designing and creating all new costumes. Many of her designs are influenced by colors of the sea, with beautiful combinations of blue, green and silver. “Even sea shells and sea creatures are used in the details of the costumes,” said Coleman.
1. Whimsical sets and costumes
Diamond is known for 3. Perfect for creating storybook ballets that can the entire be enjoyed by family
audiences of all ages. “There are comedic elements and it’s entertaining for the entire family,” said Diamond. At about two hours long, Little Mermaid can easily be enjoyed by younger children, and with Diamond’s wit and humor, it’s sure to be enjoyed by adults.
