1

Dance Theatre of Harlem is a leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim, encompassing a performing ensemble, a leading arts education center and Dancing Through Barriers, a national and international education and community outreach program.

2

Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem was considered “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (The New York Times, 1971).

3

Shortly after the assassination of The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Mitchell was inspired to start a school that would offer children — especially those in Harlem, the community in which he was born — the opportunity to learn about dance and the allied arts. Meet the Charlotte Symphony Family Sixty-two first-rate musicians. One world-class music director. They are the talented Charlotte Symphony musicians you come to see perform timeless classics and cutting-edge concerts. But do you know about the many other groups associated with the orchestra? Take a look at the Charlotte Symphony family tree: Symphony Guild of Charlotte

Charlotte Symphony Chorus Established in 1951 and made up of nearly 150 of the area’s top vocalists, this professional-caliber chorus – formerly the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte – performs with the orchestra each season. Charlotte Symphony Director of Choruses Kenney Potter prepares the large-scale chorus and the smaller Charlotte Symphony Chamber Singers for performances of the great choral masterpieces. This season, the Chorus will be featured in Magic of Christmas, Handel’s Messiah, Carmina Burana and more. charlottesymphonychorus.org

The Symphony Guild of Charlotte was formed in 1950 and consists of nearly 200 members today. Each season, the Guild hosts the popular Heart of the Home Kitchen Tour, a fundraiser for music education. The Guild also sponsors educational programs, including the Musical Petting Zoo, to nurture young musicians. This hands-on opportunity gives young children the chance to interact with harps, trumpets, violins and more. You can find the Musical Petting Zoo at Knight Theater before every Lollipops family concert. symphonyguildcharlotte.org

Little Mermaid – An Underwater Adventure

ive into the underwater world of Charlotte Ballet’s Little Mermaid! The Hans Christian Anderson tale about a curious mermaid longing to leave her ocean home, comes to life with imaginative choreography from Mark Diamond and extraordinary new sets and costumes. Little Mermaid, first published in 1837, is a fairy tale about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea for the love of a human prince. “I based my ballet on the original Hans Christian Andersen tale with adaptations that make it possible as a ballet,” said choreographer Mark Diamond. “There are comedic elements and it’s entertaining for the entire family.” Diamond is collaborating with set designer Howard Jones to create the perfect atmosphere for Little Mermaid. Act I of the ballet takes place under the sea, with projections designed to transport the audience into a magical underwater world and a cast

of sea creatures including sparkling seahorses, slithering eels and tumbling starfish. The Little Mermaid “swims” through Act I, carried by the Undertow, danced by several male dancers. Once the Little Mermaid reaches land, she makes her way to the Prince’s Palace, an 1820s estate. Charlotte Ballet Director of Costumes Aimee J. Coleman is designing and creating all new costumes for Little Mermaid. Her designs for the Prince and his court are inspired by clothing from the late Empire and early Regency era and are influenced by colors of the sea, with beautiful combinations of blue, green and silver. “Even sea shells and sea creatures are used in the details of the costumes,” said Coleman. Tickets for Little Mermaid are on Photo by Jeff Cravotta sale now. Join us in March and venture with the Little Mermaid as she travels from her underwater home to the majestic Prince’s Palace.

A Tale of Love and Death

I

Opera Carolina's Romeo & Juliet set to break hearts in January the roles. “Juliet begins high and light, but she has to be a dramatic soprano by the end.” Beauty and youth alone aren’t enough. Uzan is directing a cast of up-andcomers (soprano Marie-Eve Munger and tenor Jonathan Boyd in the leads), but he brings established star power to Charlotte. The general and artistic director of Opéra de Montréal from 1988 to 2002 is also a librettist (Cyrano) and a novelist (“The Shattered Sky”), and holds a doctorate in literature, theatrical studies and philosophy. Uzan’s advice to anyone seeing Gounod’s opera for the first time: “Arrive completely open to emotion and sensitivity and pure beauty.” You already know how it ends. But the passion and drama leading to the poison and dagger – they’re what keep us coming back.

t’s no spoiler to say Romeo and Juliet die in the end. Everyone knows that. The two hopeful lovers end it all because their families can’t get along. Even though we know the outcome, we can’t get enough. Shakespeare’s tragic romance has cast a spell for centuries. Why is something so bleak so enduring? “Ah, that’s like asking why love is so enduring,” said Bernard Uzan, the celebrated New York-based director overseeing Opera Carolina’s production. “What can be more eternal than two young people falling madly in love?” “True, it doesn’t end well,” Uzan said in his mellifluous French accent. “But dying because of love – isn’t that better than dying of isolation?” Looking on the bright side, Uzan says the couple’s nearly simultaneous deaths mean they’re united for eternity. The 70-year-old director has helmed Romeo & Juliet “15 or 16 times.” And while the opera’s text doesn’t follow Shakespeare’s exactly, Uzan’s version will be faithful to the spirit of Charles Gounod’s opera. Uzan’s favorite scene is the wildly passionate balcony scene. (“O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou, Romeo?”) He has seen the balcony in Verona that allegedly inspired Shakespeare and reports it’s actually very modest – about 5 feet tall. But audiences want a tall balcony, and this production won’t disappoint. It’s a more romantic (if inaccurate) 9 feet high. He said casting two people who can credibly pull off the leads is essential. “They’re supposed to be 18,” he said. “They have to look young.” But more importantly, they have to be able to sing

8 Big Reasons to see Wicked in January

B

roadway’s biggest blockbuster is back! Wicked returns to Charlotte Jan. 6-31 at Ovens Auditorium. Winner of over 100 international awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is a show Broadway fans never want to miss. Whether this is your first or 10th time seeing it, you’re guaranteed to be blown away. It’s easy to see why after you read the fun facts below proving that this show is bigger than big!

Alyssa Fox in Wicked.

The electrical department uses enough power to supply approximately 12 houses. Adding in the sound and automation departments, the total would increase to 18 houses.

2 3 4 5

(smell, sight, hearing, speech) during that time.

6

The show has 90 wigs, using 70 during any given show. All are made of human hair and made individually for each actor, using their own hairline in the front.

About 200 pounds of dry ice is used per show!

7 8

During the first big “quick change,” 17 actors change from the mob to students in 1.5 minutes (including costumes, wigs and shoes.)

Four to five miles of cable is used in the electrical department. The dragon’s wingspan is the same as a Cessna 172.

There are 179 different types and finishes of leather used in shoes, gloves, hats and costume trim for Wicked.

The “life casts” for the animal masks take 2-3 hours, and the person loses most of their senses

Tickets are going fast! Visit BlumenthalArts.org today.
