CHARLOTTE SQUAWKS: 12 ANGRY HENS
WHO's WHO JEANA NEAL BORMAN (Music and Vocal Direction) performs extensively in the Charlotte area. She serves as staff accompanist for Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory. Meanwhile, against all sage advice, she has been squawking for many seasons. Over the years, she has spent a lot of quality time behind the keys, touring and performing as music director/accompanist for the education division of Opera Carolina for 10 seasons and appearing with Queen City Virtuosi, Theatre Charlotte, Davidson Community Players, Lake Wylie Community Theatre, North Mecklenburg Community Chorus, Carolina Voices, Central Piedmont Community College, the Broadway Lights series and various high school theater productions. Finally, 12 Angry Hens is here, tailor-made to keep on squawking! There's never a dull moment, and Jeana salutes the great cast of this and all previous years. Also, thanks to Stormy and Celeste for great support in this and all the other creative endeavors!
MEGHAN HELMS (Assistant Stage Manager) is enjoying her fifth year with Squawks! She has worked backstage in some form or another for a few local theater companies over the past nine years. Thanks to the cast, crew and Blumenthal for this opportunity, and an even bigger thank you to Jordan and Emma for being super encouraging and sometimes cooking dinner. ROBBIE JAEGER (Costume Design and Performer) is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. This is his ninth time performing in the show, and his sixth time pulling double duty as the show’s costume designer. A prolific actor, designer, director and choreographer, Robbie has been seen on many local stages throughout the Carolina region. He holds various performance and choreography awards for his Charlotte-based work, and most recently he appeared onstage as Roley Poley in the world premiere of 101 Dalmatians: The Musical at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, and in Birds of a Feather for QCTC. His costume designs were seen this year for QCTC's Birds of a Feather, Providence Day School’s Anything Goes and for Shakespeare Carolina’s Winter’s Tale. Robbie currently serves as the artistic director for Asheville Creative Arts in western North Carolina, where he will direct and choreograph Miss Nelson Is Missing this July.
MIKE COLLINS (Executive Producer, Director and Performer) is host of Charlotte Talks on WFAE, 90.7FM, weekdays at 9 a.m. and a principal at Collins, Haynes & Lully Advertising. He has been with Charlotte Squawks since its humble beginnings and has directed the last seven editions. Prior to being involved in Squawks, and sometimes during that involvement, he has appeared in productions for Charlotte Rep, Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte, Theatre Charlotte, CPCC Summer Theater and the Belmont Abbey Players. Mike has also directed other shows for numerous theaters. He has taken everything he learned from those experiences and ignored it – as you will soon see.
BRIAN KAHN (Producer, Book, Lyrics and PowerPoint Design). When he’s not writing musical parodies, Brian is a litigation partner at the law firm of McGuireWoods, LLP, specializing in complex business disputes and financial services litigation. Prior written works include the last 11 Squawks and countless legal briefs filed in courts throughout the nation. Brian is not in the show this year because he has 9-year-old triplet boys and a 5-year old (who thinks he's either 9 or Batman), and he likes to see them on occasion. Brian would like to thank his wife, Raizel, for allowing him to write this year's show and promises to stop telling the kids that they will all be bald by the time they turn 10.
KEVIN HARRIS (Performer). This marks Kevin's ninth year performing in Squawks. He has been performing in musicals, cabarets and plays for over 30 years. His choral experience dates back even further. Some of his favorite roles includes Jim in "Big River," Joe in "Showboat," and "Ain't Misbehavin'." He is a certified massage therapist for over 17 years and a Reiki Master. He thanks his wonderful wife and guide, Carmen Harris. Also KJ, Elyse, Rachael, Gabrielle, Jasmine and Annabelle for their support.
SUSAN ROBERTS KNOWLSON (Performer) is thrilled to be squawking again this year! She 9D
CHARLOTTE SQUAWKS: 12 ANGRY HENS
WHO's WHO has been seen across the country in national tours, regional theater, opera, TV and off-Broadway. She has received multiple awards from Charlotte Magazine, Creative Loafing and The Metrolina Theatre Association for her acting. Charlotte audiences may also recognize Susan from performances at Actor’s Theatre, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, CPCC, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and The Charlotte Symphony. Favorite roles include Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Maria in The Sound of Music, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Marian in The Music Man, Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, and many more.
Actors Equity Association. An Alabama native, she has joyfully returned to the South and was seen as Rona in Theatre Charlotte’s production of ... Spelling Bee. NYC, Regional, & National Tour credits include: Kiss Me, Kate; Music Man; On the Town (Hildy); White Christmas (Betty Haynes); Footloose (Rusty); Sound of Music (Maria); Oklahoma (Ado Annie); Chicago (Liz); Evita (Eva Peron); Les Misérables (Fantine); Last Five Years (Cathy); Little Night Music (Anne); and HS Musical (Sharpay). She has a BFA in Theatre/MT. Megan sends kisses to her family and hubby for their unconditional support.
DALLAS LANDRUM (Stage Manager). Dallas has been corralling cats while juggling chainsaws (aka stage managing) since college, but she’s especially pleased to be managing this group of misfits. Dallas was the Resident Stage Manager for Children’s Theatre of Charlotte from 20102015, managing such productions as The Secret Garden, Tarzan, and The Reluctant Dragon. She has also managed local productions with Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Blumenthal Performing Arts, Theatre Charlotte, BareBones Theatre Group, Epic Arts Repertory Theatre, Collaborative Arts Theatre, and Charlotte Shakespeare Festival. Regionally, Dallas has worked with The Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Public Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, PCPA Theatrefest, and Virginia Opera. Favorite productions include Hair (NSMT), Angels in America (CCM), PostSecret: The Show (BPA) and Turandot (Virginia Opera). She attended the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and is a member of Stage Manager’s Association. She gives all her love and gratitude to the two loves of her life, Terry and Kai.
ALAN MORGAN (Performer). "Season 12 and I’m still around. How about that?! It’s wonderful to be a part of what’s become part of Charlotte’s arts identity." A native Charlottean, Morgan earned his Actors Equity card early on while involved in music and theater productions in New York City. Other credits include tenure with various dance and music troupes, leading roles in community theater productions, and miscellaneous recording studio projects. Morgan recently joined Johnson C. Smith University to lead the new Office of Auxiliary Services, a key focus of which is to build a revenue-producing event services operation. "I promise, Dr. Carter, I really am working on that." PATRICK RATCHFORD (Performer) returns to the Squawks family for Charlotte Squawks 12! "There’s definitely no shortage of material this year – both in N.C. and nationally!" He has worked throughout the region in a variety of roles and has been recognized locally by Metrolina Theatre Association, Creative Loafing and Charlotte Magazine. Area audiences may recognize him from performances at CP Summer Theatre, Actors Theatre, Charlotte Rep, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and Blowing Rock Stage Company to name a few. Performances include musical theater classics such as The Music Man (Harold Hill) and Annie Get Your Gun (Frank Butler) as well as more current works including I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (Man 2), Bat Boy (Sheriff/Pan), and The Drowsy Chaperone
MEGAN MIDKIFF (Performer). Megan is excited to return to squawking again, after being uber pregnant in 2015! She dedicates this fun show to sweet, zaney, Laney! "She's amazing & I'm obsessed with her :)." Megan performed as a NYC-based professional musical theater actress for almost 10 years and was honored with the first Roger Sturtevant Award from the 9E
CHARLOTTE SQUAWKS: 12 ANGRY HENS
WHO's WHO LUCIA STETSON (Performer). Lucia is happy to be back in the Booth Playhouse squawking for a second year. Past local credits include Les Miserables (Fantine), Scarlet Pimpernel (Marguerite St. Just), Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical (DoraLee), Monty Python’s Spamalot (Lady of the Lake), Suessical the Musical (Mazie La Bird), Sound of Music (Maria), Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (Betty Hanes). Originating from Washington State (yes, the actual state of Washington, no DC; more trees and mountains, fewer monuments and screaming politicians), Lucia attended AMDA in New York and has performed with theater companies on both coasts, and has toured the world singing with Norwegian and Orient Cruise Lines. Now Lucia is happy to be a resident of the Queen City and a return Squawker, as well as mother to Izzy and AJ, and boss/wife to husband, Jeff. "I would like to publicly thank my dentist, Dr. Tom Farley I’m hoping I get free teeth whitening out of it."
(Feldzeig). Please remember that while Patrick may appear in this show as Gov. Pat McCrory, he is most certainly NOT Gov. McCrory, so please refrain from throwing tomatoes or shouting obscenities. CARMEN SCHULTZ (Performer) is delighted (well, mostly delighted) to return to the Booth Playhouse stage for her eighth consecutive performance of Blumenthal’s Production of Charlotte Squawks! Carmen attended the School of Music at ASU and UNCC, where she performed in various productions and choirs and was a member of a female vocal jazz group. Locally, Carmen has performed with Actor’s Theatre, Theatre Charlotte, Matthews Playhouse and Opera Carolina. For seven years, Carmen was a performer for Carolina Voices on The Singing Christmas Tree and Spring Broadway Revue. Favorite roles include Jeri Neal in Dixie Swim Club, Linoleum in The Great American Trailer Park the Musical, and where else, but Squawks can she add Adele, Michael Jackson and Dionne Warwick to her repertoire?! "Love to all of these fine folks who I share this stage with! Much love to my dear family and friends who support me every day and appreciate my goofy sense of humor!" Carmen will begin the greatest production of her life in August, as she will marry her best friend and the love of her life, Christopher!!
LOUANN VAUGHN (Performer) returns for her 11th edition of Charlotte Squawks and enjoys performing in musical theater when time allows. She spends most of her time teaching group exercise at the Harris YMCA, leading worship music at Myers Park Methodist Church and tutoring middle and high school students in math. She has a degree in mathematics and French from Wake Forest University, where she was a cheerleader and member of the dance company – many years ago! LouAnn wants to thank Scott, her amazing husband of 29 years, and her three grown daughters for their support of these quirky musical endeavors. "Padgett, Rachael and Sydney, I could not be any prouder of the incredible young women you have become! Special kudos to the newest member of our clan, Carson Sullivan, our first son-in-law. Welcome to the family!" LouAnn loves the opportunity to lampoon this great city that often takes itself way too seriously. Thankfully, folks keep doing stuff that's sufficiently stupid that it gives the Squawks lyricist ample spoofing material year after year. Keep your nose clean or you may end up in the next version of Squawks. Enjoy the show!
BOBBY TYSON (Performer) Bobby is happy to call himself an "original squawker" and to be a part of this his eighth Squawks. "Wow! How far we have come." Poking fun at our fair city is a personal endeavor for Bobby in that he is an actual Charottean and remembers when the ACC B-ball tourny was the highlight of our lives. At this point, Bobby has also worked at pretty much every theater in Charlotte, most recently in Father Comes Home From the Wars at Actor's Theatre and as Jackie Robinson in Jackie and Me at Imaginon. He has also been seen in countless commercials, corporate videos, films (Having Our Say), and TV ("One Tree Hill" and "Army Wives" to name a few). Bobby feels the need to really thank his support group, Nikki, Bri, Gloria, Law and Adonis for still going out in public with him after being a Squawker. Enough talk ... Let's find someone to pick at. 9F

DIRECTOR'S NOTES BY MIKE COLLINS backstage water closets. So, while other shows may have canceled, we feel confident in adhering to that old adage, “the show must go on.” But why? This is the 12th edition of Charlotte Squawks. By now, you’d think we all would have learned – and that includes you, sitting there trying to read this program so you can avoid talking to the person next to you and hoping that holding the paper close to your face will lessen your chances of other people spotting you in our audience instead of at something worthwhile. Let’s hope that tonight we all learn something because with 12 Angry Hens, Charlotte Squawks exits adolescence. We shudder to think what our rebellious teen years might be like. So watch, listen and learn my friends. Take our admonishments to heart. And when it’s over, go forth and sin no more. This could be your last chance. Oh, and when you’re in the restroom at intermission, get in and out as quickly as possible. If you see a man in a dress, please tell Kevin to get backstage where he belongs.
he Squawks production team has been getting more than its usual number of letters, texts, emails and social media postings encouraging us to cancel our show this year. These requests are not unusual. We get them every year. But this year, we were bombarded so we decided to look into what exactly is going on. We’ve been writing and rehearsing a lot lately and have been a bit out of touch. Evidently, (and this may come as news to you, too) there is some disagreement over bathrooms and who can use them. Frankly, this makes no sense to us. We have a sufficient supply of very nice bathrooms at our disposal backstage. They’re clean, well-lit and when we sing in them, we sound great. However, upon further investigation, we discovered that the ruckus over bathrooms also has something to do with worries over men in dresses. Look, anyone who knows this bunch will understand we have no problem with that. We’ve had men in dresses, even in tutus, gracing our stage year after year and, yes, they have used our
B
WRITER'S NOTES BY BRIAN KAHN
ack in 2004, Squawks performed “One Game More,” a parody of “One Day More” from Les Miserables. It was a song about a Panthers team that came out of nowhere only to lose the Superbowl in heartbreaking fashion. In 2011, Squawks sang “Tea Partiers Love Trump,” a throwaway parody of Sinatra’s “The Lady is a Tramp” about a would-be presidential candidate who didn’t even get out of the gates. And just last June, Squawks performed “Oh Yes, We Debate Transgender,” a somewhat esoteric parody of the Platters’ “Great Pretender” about the failure of a local ordinance based on silly fears about men going into women’s bathrooms. Some themes have a way of coming back … with a vengeance! What a year, huh? Last December when we decided on the title Charlotte Squawks: 12 Angry Hens, we thought it was a cute name that fit the general tenor of Squawks shows. Little did we know that the legal motif would be so apropos. We’ve got a Supreme Court divided 4 to 4, two
presidential candidates who can’t stay out of court (one of whom regularly threatens to sue folks on Twitter) and, of course, HB2, which has spawned at least five major lawsuits (probably many more by the time you’re reading this). Which leads me to my last point. Our writing deadline for Squawks is always in April, so I would like to officially ask all city, state and national newsmakers to observe a moratorium on acting like idiots from April to July next year. It would sure make our lives a lot easier. This year has been, by far, the worst year for setting material. Every time that we thought we’d finished learning a song, we had to rewrite it as folks found a way to dig themselves into even deeper holes (looking at you McCrory). So you politicos out there, how about a nice relaxing spring break next year followed by a month or two of sanity? The actors are about to kill Mike and me if we hand them another revision. Of course, maybe that’s your intent. And, if so, well played … … but remember, payback’s a bitch. 9G

THREE ACTS, TWO DANCERS, ONE RADIO HOST
WHO's WHO IRA GLASS is the host and creator of the public radio program "This American Life." The show is heard on more than 500 public radio stations in the U.S., and also on public radio in Canada and Australia. Most weeks it’s the most popular podcast in America. Under Glass’s editorial direction, "This American Life" has won the highest honors for broadcasting and journalistic excellence. A television adaptation of the program ran on the Showtime network for two years, winning three Emmys. The radio show has put out its own comic book, greatest hits compilations, live stage shows, two feature films, a “radio decoder” toy, temporary tattoos and a paintby-numbers set. A spin-off program called Serial ran for 12 weeks in 2014 and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, the most listened-to podcast ever created. This is Glass's professional dance show debut.
cocktail party dance show featuring Barnes and Bass. ANNA BASS began working with MBB&CO in 2003 and now serves as associate artistic director. She has performed Barnes’ work all over the country, on stages ranging from public fountains and city parks to New York City Center and Carnegie Hall. Bass performed in Glass's two most recent This American Life Live! events – catching boxes while dancing as a part of TAL’s cinema event, and appearing as a roller-skating mouse alongside Mike Birbiglia in The Radio Drama Episode at the BAM opera house. She often assists Barnes with theater projects, and served as the assistant choreographer for productions at The Atlantic Theater, The Public Theater and Yale Repertory Theater. Bass is originally from a small town in Virginia where she studied almost every dance style, from classical ballet to country line dancing. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
MONICA BILL BARNES (Director/ Choreographer) is the artistic director of Monica Bill Barnes & Company Productions, a New York City based dance company founded in 1997. Barnes creates full-length shows that tour the country’s biggest stages and tiniest rooms, bringing dance where it doesn’t belong: making site-specific dances in public places, mounting collaborations with radio hosts and bringing down the house at comedy shows. MBB&CO has performed in over seventy cities throughout the U.S. at venues including The American Dance Festival, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Since 2006, Barnes has been making duets for herself and Anna Bass. She is continually inspired by their partnership on and off stage. Barnes began working with Ira Glass in 2012 when she created a solo for David Rakoff and performed with MBB&CO as a part of This American Life Live! Current projects include a collaboration with author/visual artist Maira Kalman creating a guided museum workout, and Happy Hour, the world’s first-ever
JANE COX (Lighting Designer) has designed with MBB&CO for more than a decade, and her collaboration with the company is central to her creative life. In 2014 Jane was nominated for both the Tony ® and the Drama Desk awards for her work on Machinal, and she also designed All The Way on Broadway. In 2013, Jane was awarded the Henry Hewes Design Award for her work on The Flick. Other recent designs in NYC include Picnic and Dinner with Friends for the Roundabout, Passion at CSC and The Whale at Playwrights Horizons. Opera designs include Sydney Opera House, Houston Grand Opera and New York City Opera. Jane has a long-standing relationship with The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and has been teaching about light and design at Princeton University since 2007. KELLY HANSON (Set/Costume Designer) is an original company member of MBB&CO, and has been collaborating with Monica since 2001. She is also an Emmy-nominated art 9I

DIXIE'S NEVER WEAR A TUBE TOP WHILE WHILE RIDING A MECHANICAL BULL
A LITTLE SCRIBBLE FROM DIXIE’S NOTEPAD
I
• Said I love you to someone and meant it. • Said I love you to myself and meant it.
f I was to take a notebook and write down all the good times and adventures I have had in my life, I would clear out a paper factory. Fact is, when someone says, "Hey, I have a crazy idea," I find it best to respond with “YES.” Sometimes the ideas are stupid, but in the execution, I always tend to learn something in the midst of the adventure. I think that is what I like best about life – the living part. I never can quite understand why some people shy away from having a good time in life and live almost like they are in some kind of plastic bubble. There is so much that this world has to offer and I, for one, don't want to get to the end of my days and think, crap, I completely forgot to have a good time. To me, when my head hits the pillow each night, I know it was a successful day if I did the following things: • Laughed loud enough so that people stared at me. • Flirted just enough with a stranger so that it made him feel good. • Skipped. • Said thank you to someone even if they didn't do a good job. • Complimented someone who really needs it. • Held the door for someone who doesn't need it. • Called someone to say I was just thinking about them. • Stared at the sky and found a cloud that looks like a bedroom accessory.
Remember your fi st ride on a mechanical bull, the anticipation and the butterflies? The fear of what you were going to look like. The terror of how the hell you were going to stay on and how badly you'd be banged up if you fell off. That image in your mind of you being able to ride like a rodeo champion and that complete panic of how you were ever going to make the reality match that image in your mind. That's pretty much what life is. If you aren't going through all those emotions on a daily basis, you aren't really living a life that anyone is going to be talking about. In that case, what the hell is the point? If you don't face every day like you are in the ring with that mechanical bull, then quite frankly, you don't have much room to be bitching about anything going wrong. Until you get some battle scars, you haven't really lived a life. Adventure isn't something you are going to find on your phone or by keeping quiet or by staying home. Adventure is in that ring with that bull. And life happens when you make the decision to climb on top. So if you haven't taken your ride, I have just one question. What are you waiting for? – Dixie Longate
WHO's WHO DIXIE LONGATE (Star) Just a simple girl from Mobile, Alabama, I never would have thought that stepping on a very small stage at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival would have catapulted me out of the living room and onto the world stage. I am most known for Dixie's Tupperware
Party, which went from the Fringe to an offBroadway production at the Ars Nova Theater in 2007 and garnered the prestigious Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. I have gone on to do the show in Scotland, London, Australia and Canada as well as in cities all over these fruited plains. 9M

WHO's WHO And after all that traveling and all those hotel rooms and all those late night jacuzzi, I have done more running around than a nudist couple stepping on a nest of yellow jackets. And I figured it was high time I shared some of them stories with all y’all. So I'm back to give you some learning, because like my Momma always says, "Even though vodka looks a whole lot like water, the end results are a hell of a lot different." Trust me, I got a lot of learning to share. Enjoy the show. And thank you to Randy Weeks and John Ekeberg for answering the phone. Yea!

Since then, that show has gone on to play five different countries and has become one of the longest-running off-Broadway tours of the last decade. His follow up shows include Broken Shit and Baby Jesus, No Instructions and My Bags Went Where? for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tonight's show marks the 5th collaboration with Dixie Longate. Thank you to DCPA for your faith and encouragement.

She served as ACM on the Broadway’s Man of La Mancha and the national tour of All Shook Up. Since 2008, she has been happily traveling the world with Dixie Longate and couldn’t be more excited to be around for the next chapter of this adventure. She laughs every single day and thanks the ‘redhead’ for teaching her to have pride in “wearing her own crown”.

WHO's WHO IN MEMORY: One day RANDY WEEKS said, “Why don’t you write a play and we’ll do it. I trust you.” The result is what brings us all together tonight. Randy was one of the rare people in this business who remembered why they call it a “PLAY.” Your exit from the stage was far too early.
DOWN SOUTH LLC is proud to have produced Dixie’s Tupperware Party as well as this new adventure for Dixie. The partners of Down South have been involved in more than 70 Broadway, off-Broadway, and national touring shows. There’s always something going on Down South.

… but my wife does. Fifteen days after adopting our newborn son, my wife was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Immediately, I went into protection mode. My first priority was finding the very best place for my wife to receive treatment. We made the right choice with Levine Cancer Institute. Today, life in the Ross home is sweet – my wife’s cancer is in remission. And Caden? He’s three now and keeping us both on our toes.
And it’s my story too.
