My first priority was finding the very best place for my wife to receive treatment. We made the right choice with Levine Cancer Institute. Opera Carolina Joins Forces With NYC Opera and Italy's Puccini Festival
O
Opera Carolina’s season-closing 2016-17 performances of the opera that celebrates the American West. The Charlotte premiere will be followed by performances in New York (September 2017 at the Rose Theater, home of Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center), the Puccini Festival in Lucca (November 2017 at Teatro del Giglio), followed by performances in Pisa and Livorno, Italy. Acclaimed European director Ivan Stefanutti designed the production, and Meena with Opera Carolina will conduct all performances. The Girl of the West is a three-act opera based on the play by American author David Belasco. Containing some of Puccini’s most ambitious and lush music, the opera became the center of a legal battle between the Puccini estate and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber over the use of the opera’s main melody in Webber’s “The Music of the Night” in Phantom of the Opera. Puccini considered La fanciulla del West one of his greatest works.
pera Carolina is embarking on a unique partnership with the revitalized New York City Opera and the Puccini Festival in the composer’s home city of Lucca, Italy for the 2016-17 season, which will result in a new production of Puccini’s first American opera, La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the West). In a Dec. 10 news conference, Opera Carolina General Director & Principal Conductor James Meena and New York City Opera General Director Michael Capasso joined Alessandro Tambellini, mayor of the city of Lucca, Italy, to announce the exciting partnership. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Opera Carolina and for Charlotte," said Meena. "We get to collaborate with companies with an international reach and reputation – and Charlotte again finds itself on an international stage. I'm proud that Opera Carolina is in such extraordinary company and eager for our chance to shine in New York and Italy." The new production, being created in Charlotte, will originate in April 2017 with

A Day in the Life: Dancer Josh Hall
W
hat does a day in the life of a professional dancer look like? We followed dancer Josh Hall, who grew up in Concord, as he prepared for a performance. Hall, 21, has danced with Charlotte Ballet for four years.
MORNING After a breakfast of eggs with spinach, apples, juice and coffee, Josh starts his day with a ballet class. Josh and the 27 other professional dancers of Charlotte Ballet take class each morning to warm up for the day and to continue refining their technique.
MIDDAY Following morning class, Josh rehearses various ballets until 6 p.m. Josh and the rest of the dancers are rehearsing for the Spring Works performance, coming up April 28-30. Josh says his goal as a professional dancer is “to jump into any opportunity and never hesitate to try new things.”
EVENING Josh finishes his day with Pilates at 8th Street Studio. Many of the dancers train in Pilates as a way to increase core strength and flexibility. After Pilates, Josh enjoys dinner with friends and then winds down for the night with his cat, Athena, and an episode of his favorite show, “Doctor Who.”
