Home Free for the Holidays Dec. 7 • Knight Theater Home Free won NBC’s “The Sing-Off” with its a cappella covers of country music’s hottest hits in 2013, and played to a nearly sold-out crowd in McGlohon Theater last fall. They return in December with Home Free for the Holidays. It’s the perfect holiday concert for families and fans of a cappella music. f you missed Fidelio, the first performance of Opera Carolina’s 67th season, it’s not too late to subscribe. Opera Carolina is offering minisubscriptions, which save you 15 percent. Tickets start at just $66; that’s $33 per show. And subscribers get additional benefits: exclusive invitations to subscriberonly events and discount tickets to other happenings throughout the year. The two-opera package includes Romeo & Juliet, the world’s most famous tale of starcrossed lovers. A cast of rising stars takes the stage Jan. 24, 28 and 30. On April 10, 14 and 16, Leoncavallo’s masterpiece Pagliacci gets paired with the U.S. premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Aleko for twice the betrayal, heartbreak and murder. “These performances offer a wonderful introduction to opera,” said James Meena, Opera Carolina general director and principal conductor. “Romeo & Juliet was destined to be sung as an opera ... and the double bill packs an emotional punch into a condensed time frame.” The two-opera package is available through carolinatix.org, the Blumenthal box office at 704.372.1000 or by calling Opera Carolina at 704.332.7177, ext. 100, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s also not too soon to plan a 2016 cultural vacation. Opera Carolina reimagined its first production of the season, Fidelio, in Berlin. Now, Opera Carolina and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte are planning an enriching adventure to Germany’s capital. The trip, from June 2-16, includes a performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute by Deutsche Oper Berlin and a concert by The Berlin Philharmonic. The tour group
will also explore Austria’s capital, Vienna, and enjoy the architecture, food and a performance at the renowned Vienna State Opera. Learn more on our events calendar at operacarolina.org or call 704.332.7177, ext. 100, for information. This season, Opera Carolina aims to transfix and transform. A journey to two legendary European capitals is guaranteed to accomplish that.

Preparing for a Nutcracker Debut
utcracker means tradition, family, holidays and, for many parents and children, their first time going to the ballet. Charlotte Ballet dancers and parents Alessandra Ball James and Addul Manzano share three tips for making your family’s Nutcracker debut especially enjoyable. Tip 1: Set the Scene This December, James plans to bring her son, Charlie, to Nutcracker for the first time. To prepare, she and her husband have started reading Charlie a “Nutcracker” book. “He loves reading the book and learning about the different characters,” said James. “Once he has the story down, I plan to start playing the Tchaikovsky score so that he’s familiar with the music.”
Looking for more tips? Charlotte Ballet posts Nutcracker photos, videos and a synopsis online, as well as tips about parking and dinning when you visit the Belk Theater. Visit charlotteballet.org for information and tickets.
Tip 2: Set up the Day “There’s so much to do in uptown around the holidays,” said Manzano, dad to Soleil and Julian. “When my wife brings the kids to the ballet, she makes sure to leave time to see the holiday decorations, take photos in the Belk Theater lobby and check out the Charlotte Symphony James and Manzano pictured Orchestra warming with Manzano's 5-year-old up prior to the show.” daughter Soleil. Tip 3: Set Expectations Nutcracker is about two hours, with a 20-minute intermission. “If your child can make it quietly through a movie, they should be fine at Nutcracker,” said James, who is also talking to Charlie about theater etiquette – being quiet, staying seated and clapping at the right times.

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 18951960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece, Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical
play, blending Rodgers’ musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film ’45, ’62; Broadway ‘96), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television ’57, ’65, ’97; Broadway ‘13), Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Pulitzers and Olivier Awards. HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at nineteen and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on, Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for the Lunts. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story and Arsenic and Old Lace. JACK O’BRIEN (Director).
