f you missed Fidelio, the fi st performance of Opera Carolina’s 67th season, it’s not too late to subscribe. Opera Carolina is offering minisubscriptions, which save you 15 percent. Tickets start at just $66; that’s $33 per show. And subscribers get additional benefi s: exclusive invitations to subscriberonly events and discount tickets to other happenings throughout the year. The two-opera package includes Romeo & Juliet, the world’s most famous tale of starcrossed lovers. A cast of rising stars takes the stage Jan. 24, 28 and 30. On April 10, 14 and 16, Leoncavallo’s masterpiece Pagliacci gets paired with the U.S. premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Aleko for twice the betrayal, heartbreak and murder. “These performances offer a wonderful introduction to opera,” said James Meena, Opera Carolina general director and principal conductor. “Romeo & Juliet was destined to be sung as an opera ... and the double bill packs an emotional punch into a condensed time frame.” The two-opera package is available through carolinatix.org, the Blumenthal box office at 704.372.1000 or by calling Opera Carolina at 704.332.7177, ext. 100, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s also not too soon to plan a 2016 cultural vacation. Opera Carolina reimagined its fi st production of the season, Fidelio, in Berlin. Now, Opera Carolina and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte are planning an enriching adventure to Germany’s capital. The trip, from June 2-16, includes a performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute by Deutsche Oper Berlin and a concert by The Berlin Philharmonic. The tour group
will also explore Austria’s capital, Vienna, and enjoy the architecture, food and a performance at the renowned Vienna State Opera. Learn more on our events calendar at operacarolina.org or call 704.332.7177, ext. 100, for information. This season, Opera Carolina aims to transfix and t ansform. Preparing for a Nutcracker Debut
utcracker means tradition, family, holidays and, for many parents and children, their fi st time going to the ballet. Charlotte Ballet dancers and parents Alessandra Ball James and Addul Manzano share three tips for making your family’s Nutcracker debut especially enjoyable. Tip 1: Set the Scene This December, James plans to bring her son, Charlie, to Nutcracker for the fi st time. To prepare, she and her husband have started reading Charlie a “Nutcracker” book. “He loves reading the book and learning about the different characters,” said James. “Once he has the story down, I plan to start playing the Tchaikovsky score so that he’s familiar with the music.”
Looking for more tips? Charlotte Ballet posts Nutcracker photos, videos and a synopsis online, as well as tips about parking and dinning when you visit the Belk Theater. Visit charlotteballet.org for information and tickets.
Tip 2: Set up the Day “There’s so much to do in uptown around the holidays,” said Manzano, dad to Soleil and Julian. “When my wife brings the kids to the ballet, she makes sure to leave time to see the holiday decorations, take photos in the Belk Theater lobby and check out the Charlotte Symphony James and Manzano pictured Orchestra warming with Manzano's 5-year-old up prior to the show.” daughter Soleil. Tip 3: Set Expectations Nutcracker is about two hours, with a 20-minute intermission. “If your child can make it quietly through a movie, they should be fine at Nutcracker,” said James, who is also talking to Charlie about theater etiquette – being quiet, staying seated and clapping at the right times.
