Meet the Cast of First Date Blumenthal launches production, now playing at Booth Playhouse

B

lumenthal’s first self-produced musical, First Date, will welcome Broadway’s top creative teams and brightest stars. The production will also include a new song and feature an elaborate set created by, and specifically for, the people of Charlotte. Imagine you’re on a blind date and your mother shows up – followed by Grandma Ida, your opinionated best friend, your therapist and a bevy of brokenhearted exes. Throw in a soundtrack to rival the Top 40 and you’ve got one amazing evening, right? That describes this new musical comedy perfectly. The cast of First Date is a blend of talented actors and actresses with different backgrounds. This show is unique in its own standing, so it only makes sense to have a cast that is just as unique. Take a minute to get to know the cast of First Date. Katerina Papacostas (Casey) Katerina graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and a minor in law and sociology. Her dance

background ranges in styles from advanced/intermediate jazz, hip-hop, modern, tap, Broadway dance, center and steps. Starring in several regional productions, Katerina has had a lot of stage experience. Recently, she has been touring nationally in Evita as Eva Peron. Matthew Schatz (Aaron) Having grown up in Texas, this actor has some country boy roots attached to him. Unlike many of his co-stars, Schatz’s background is filled with short films and TV series roles.

Cabaret Celebrates 50 Years Don’t miss it at Belk Theater next month

S

et in 1931 Berlin, Cabaret is based on the seedy nightlife at the Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with 19-year-old English cabaret performer, Sally Bowles. Now, as part of its 50th anniversary season, the critically acclaimed and awardwinning Roundabout Theatre Company is proud to present the Tony Award®-winning production of Cabaret by Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films). Don’t miss it at Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Nov. 8-13. Cabaret, based on the book written by Christopher Isherwood, made its original Broadway production appearance in 1966

at the Broadhurst Theater. It transferred to the Imperial Theatre and then the Broadway Theatre before closing in 1969 after 1,165 performances and 21 previews. The 1967-1968 U.S. national tour followed. Several revivals were seen both in London and on Broadway between 1986 and 2012, casting many well-known stars along the way. Cabaret made a Broadway revival stop in New York City in 2014 where Emma Stone debuted as Sally alongside Alan Cumming. Sienna Miller eventually replaced Stone as Sally until the closing of the show in February of 2015. The wellknown movie adaption starred Liza Minnelli and Alan Cumming. The critically acclaimed soundtrack, with iconic musical numbers such as "Maybe This Time" and "Money," make this show memorable for ages.

Opera Xpress’ The Tortoise & The Hare Is a Treat for Kids ... and Adults

S

low and steady wins the race. That’s the (still resonant) lesson from Aesop’s The Tortoise & The Hare. And it’s a good reminder: Readiness trumps cockiness. But following are even more reasons you may want to grab a kid and see Opera Xpress’ 2016/17 production.

1

It’s directed by a Broadway veteran. This is no amateur production. Bruce D. Long, who produces on Broadway, West End and off-Broadway, lists Memphis: The Musical, Tuck Everlasting and Of Mice and Men with James Franco among his credits. He’s got a new musical in development – By Grace, about Grace Kelly’s engagement to Prince Rainier.

2

The fable is even more fun when set to music. And the music is mostly from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. “That was a happy accident,” said Opera Carolina Director of Education Ashley Lam. “The Barber of Seville opens our main stage season.” But there’s even more fast-paced music from Rossini in this production. What’s a better soundtrack for a race than the famous William Tell Overture? (It may be more widely known as The Lone Ranger theme.)

3

The lesson really is timeless. “The hare represents Figaro from Barber,” said Lam. “He flies by the seat of his pants. But the tortoise, who’s roughly equivalent to Rosina in the opera, is humbly self-confident and prepared. She brings her lunch and hiking shoes to the race.”

The tortoise goes to bed early to get a good night’s sleep. The hare stays up playing video games and oversleeps. “The moral of the story is that preparation and determination will take you a long way,” Lam said.

4

The set is based on the board game of LIFE. But in this production, the backdrop has been updated to a state park. Close to 30,000 elementary school students will see the Opera Xpress production this year. CharlotteMecklenburg students will see it, but so will kids in Jacksonville, Asheboro, Morganton, N.C., Charleston, S.C., and parts of northern Georgia.

Top 5 Reasons to See A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder

G

etting away with murder can be so much fun ... and there's no better proof than the hilarious hit show A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder. Here are five reason not to miss this show.

1

It won universal raves from critics, including The New York Times, which called it "Hilarious and inspired!" and The Hollywood Reporter, which said it "restores our faith in musical comedy!" A fine critic at NPR even said he'd "never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical!” (Can you believe they laugh at NPR?)

2

It features the same actor dying eight different times in eight hilariously different ways. That’s more than most people die in a whole

lifetime! Who knew that death could be hilarious?

3

When your friends can't stop talking about the hottest new show in town, you'll know exactly what they mean! (You won’t have to Google it while they’re not looking.)

4

It’s guaranteed to give you something new to hum in the shower. The New York Times says, “It has one of the most accomplished scores to be heard in the past dozen years.” And just in case you’re still not convinced ...

5

It won the 2014 Tony Award® for best musical! (‘Nuff said.)

You’ll never catch The Escapologist. He is definitively born to escape. www.AndrewBasso.com BEN BLAQUE (The Weapon Master) Born and raised in the mid-west of Missouri. Ben Blaque was introduced to magic, variety acts and live performance when he accepted a job working as a stage tech for the Kirby Vanburch show in Branson, Misssouri. As Protege to Kirby, they both decided to start with the crossbow act. Kirby made a deal with Ben if he learned the act that he would feature him in his show as a special variety act. After 6 years of performing in the Kirby VanBurch show and establishing himself in the crossbow performing world. WHO’S WHO IN THE ILLUSIONISTS Moore (aka Neon Phoenix) and Eddie Cole. Credits include the 2008 hip-hop Grammy-nominated Nas album Untitled, the original The Illusionists show score, and many professional artist collaborations. Both are bred musicians: Moore’s mother toured as a rock/funk band-leader in the 1970’s; Eddie is the great-nephew to Nat ‘King’ Cole. Their multitude of influences result in a self-designated sub-genre of Galaxy Music, encompassing elements of glo-fi, underground hip-hop, experimental electropop, and vintage jazz-rock. ASIA LIVE NETWORK (Producer). Asia Live Network owns and operates the interests of producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, who began collaborating in 2007 on Le Grand Cirque at the Sydney Opera House. The show broke all box office records in the history of the iconic venue and led to multiple international productions. They repeated the critical and box office success over the coming years with Aerial Dreams and Adrenaline, again launching at the Sydney Opera House followed by extensive touring through Australasia and beyond. Recognizing the absence in the market of a high-quality touring magic show, the company created a production showcasing seven of the world’s best magicians, The Illusionists — Witness the Impossible. The show sold out its Sydney Opera House season before opening, a pattern that would follow throughout arenas and theatres in more than 50 cities in 15 countries within its first two years. The London season was filmed live and aired throughout the UK and is available on DVD. Following the show’s unprecedented success, The Illusionists 2.0 — The Next Generation of Magic, was created to cater to the demand for a sequel, and a brand new show, The Illusionists 1903 — The Golden Age of Magic, premieres in Australia in early January. During this time, their critically acclaimed production, Le Noir — The Dark Side of Cirque, has been setting imaginations and box office records on fire. Each venue it plays around the world, ranging from 500 to 15,000, is transformed like never before, so audiences experience the jaw-dropping, daredevil talents of the world’s finest circus artists and acrobats in the round, up close and personal. MAGICSPACE ENTERTAINMENT (Producer).Principals Lee D. Marshall, Joe Marsh, John Ballard, Steve Boulay and Bruce Granath have been producing and presenting shows worldwide for more than 30 years. Nutcracker’s Million-dollar Makeover

T

his December, audiences will be delighted to experience a new production of Charlotte Ballet’s beloved Nutcracker. The new production is in celebration of Jane Spratt McColl. Her husband, former Bank of America Chairman and CEO Hugh McColl Jr., and their children, are honoring her with a $1 million donation to Charlotte Ballet for the creation of new Nutcracker scenery and costumes. “My family’s gift celebrates Jane’s deep love of ballet,” McColl said. “Because of her, the magic of Nutcracker will be experienced by Charlotte audiences for years to come.” Thanks to the McColl’s gift, choreographer and Charlotte Ballet Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux

is collaborating with a world-renowned design team for the Nutcracker’s milliondollar makeover. The team includes costume designer Holly Hynes, with over 200 ballets to her credit, and scenic designer Alain Vaes, a French painter and illustrator who also designed Charlotte Ballet’s Cinderella. The 2016/2017 season is Bonnefoux’s final season as artistic director, although Charlotte Ballet will continue performing his Nutcracker. Bank of America has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the production for the next five years. “Bank of America and the McColl family are taking Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker to a new level of excellence and entertainment,” Bonnefoux said.
