Breakin’ Convention Returns to Charlotte This Fall

he incredible international festival of hip-hop dance theater, Breakin' Convention, returns to the Queen City Sept. 30-Oct. 1. This celebration of hip-hop culture comes direct from Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, thanks to a sponsorship by Sprite in Charlotte. It puts the best dance crews from around the globe and amazing local talent on the stage for two nights of innovative, interactive dance and art. Plus, free family-friendly activities will take place all week on the plaza at Levine Center for the Arts. The international lineup brings innovative artists from different cultures to the Blumenthal stage. This year’s artists hail from Korea, South Africa, Canada and the United Kingdom. From Korea, the seven-member B-Boy group Just Dance fuses traditional Korean

movement with high-energy break dancing. Another artist interested in the fusion of culture and movement is Jane Sekonya from South Africa. Her “Afrofuze” pieces allow her to tell comedic stories through dance. The two members of Canada’s Tentacle Tribe, Emmanuelle Lêphan and Elon Höglund, have worked together for over a decade, crafting pieces that draw on stories from nature and animals. While Pro-Motion’s performances are rooted in elements of the natural world, their futuristic street dancing draws on popping and animation dancers from Jonzi D the group’s U.K. home. Jonzi D, artistic director of Breakin’ Convention, is also from the U.K. His talents extend far beyond hip-hop dance, leading to collaborations with artists like The Roots, Steve Williamson and Gangstarr.

Meet Some of the Stars of The Illusionists Coming in October

T

hink you can't be fooled? Think again. The mysterious, hypertalented performers of The Illusionists – coming direct from Broadway to Ovens Auditorium Oct. 21-23 – have all had dazzling careers, thanks to the many tricks up their sleeves. Here’s a little information about some of the illusionists coming this fall. THE TRICKSTER, aka Jeff Hobson Specialty: Probably the only man who can make you laugh as he clandestinely snatches your watch. How you know him: He is best known for his hilarious hosting in Las Vegas and his own one-man shows. He has been featured on HBO, FOX Family's "Masters of Illusion," and NBC's "World's Greatest Magic." THE INVENTOR, aka Kevin James Specialty: Amazing illusions infused with quirky humor. How you know him: Starting in 2005, he was the headliner of "The World's Greatest Magic Show" in Las Vegas. Previously, he had starred in a production at the Crazy Horse in Paris. He has performed for the Prince of Monaco, the Sultan of Dubai and recently President Barack Obama and family. THE ESCAPOLOGIST, aka Andrew Basso Specialty: Death-defying escapes. How you know him: With performances in famed arenas like

Sydney Opera House and London’s Hammersmith Apollo, the Italian escape artist has gained worldwide acclaim. His most lauded trick combines Houdini’s famed escape and the world’s first fullview water torture cell. THE DEDUCTIONIST, aka Colin Cloud Specialty: Hyper-aware feats of mind reading. How you know him: With a background in forensic science, he crafted a magic career through shows at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival Fringe. His ability to recall specifics about audience members has earned him praise from the likes of Simon Cowell and ITV’s Jonathan Ross, as well as the title “the real-life Sherlock Holmes.”

5 Reasons Not to Miss Opera Carolina’s 2016/17 Season ... Even for Newcomers

O

pera: Does the word bring to mind outsized singers with long braids and funny helmets belting out songs in a foreign language? Don’t be fooled. Opera is rooted in real life. Whether you prefer jeans or cocktail attire – and either is appropriate – here are five reasons not to miss Opera Carolina’s 2016/17 season, made possible by Wells Fargo Private Bank’s sponsorship.

1

Understand pop culture. You know the music from The Barber of Seville, even if you don’t think you do. Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd sang comically to Rossini’s tunes in “The Rabbit of Seville.” Isn’t it time you saw the original, in which a busybody barber tries to help one man land the woman of his dreams?

2

Get a history lesson. La Traviata is based on the tragic life of the famously gorgeous Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. By the time she was 16, men were paying for her company (literally). Her affair with Alexander Dumas, son of “The Three Musketeers” author, is the basis for Verdi’s opera, which, in turn, was the basis for “Pretty Woman” and “Moulin Rouge.” Don’t expect a happy

Hollywood ending; the real Traviata died of tuberculosis at 23.

3

A feminist perspective. Puccini created a feminist heroine in The Girl of the West (La Fanciulla Del West). In the mountains of a lawless California Gold Rush town, an independent and beautiful, scripturequoting saloon owner tries to tame the hardliving miners. When she falls for a bandit, the sheriff (who is head over heels for her) wants to string her man up. The hero in this original spaghetti Western doesn’t wear a white hat. She wears a skirt.

4 5

The music. (Of course!)

There’s nothing else like it. In a 2014 Huffington Post essay, “Why I Love Opera and You Should, Too,” Henriette Lazaridis wrote, “Go to an actual opera house where you can enjoy the grandiosity of … the experience.” “Opera is the grandest of all art forms,” said James Meena, Opera Carolina’s general director and principal conductor. “It’s based on real life, but it’s larger than life. And it’s all set to the most glorious music ever written.”

Her first novel, Advancing Paul Newman, about women and politics in the 1960s, was published by the Viking Press, and her first movie script was It’s My Turn, starring Jill Clayburgh and Michael Douglas. Her second novel, Ex-Lover, about sexual obsession, was published by Random House. She has worked on a variety of film projects, including the final script revision of Sister Act. She then wrote and directed Let It Be Me, which starred Campbell Scott, Jennifer Beals, Leslie Caron and Patrick Stewart. Her most famous project was one of the most successful independent films of all time, Dirty Dancing. It was the unique continuing response to the story over the years that made her decide to reimagine Dirty Dancing as a stage event. The multiple viewings by audiences all over the world made her suspect that what the audiences really wanted was to be more physically involved in the story. This would mean that its ultimate form should be one that combined dance and story and music onstage in a new way. It was also her chance to add new scenes not in the movie, as well as songs she had wanted for the movie and been unable to obtain. Ms. Bergstein, through her company Magic Hour Productions, is at work on a new stage musical set in London in the late 1960s, a new work of fiction, and preparing a film to be shot in Rome as well as film to be shot in Slovenia. JAMES POWELL (Director) most recently directed the hugely popular re-imagined Cameron Mackintosh production of Les Misérables, which began in the UK and then a US tour, Spain, Canada, Japan, Korea, Australia and Broadway. As an Associate Director, James has mounted 1st class productions of Cameron Mackintosh and Disney’s Mary Poppins throughout the world. He is delighted to be back at the helm of Dirty Dancing, after directing this version in London, Toronto, Holland, Germany, and now the USA. KATE CHAMPION (Original Choreographer) is the Artistic Director and founder of the Sydney based dance-theatre company Force Majeure. A note from the creator ...

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY

I was blessed in my original collaborators on the film. Their vision and friendship was what made it possible for us to find enough truth to reach our lovely audience. I thank them all – for their commitment, their kindness and their talent. To my beloved Emile Ardolino, who I dare to hope is smiling on us, to David Chapman whose brilliance as a designer let us turn a low-budget movie into a world of radiance and glamour, and to my dear friend, Kenny Ortega. Kenny’s contribution went far beyond his electric and dynamic choreography. It was and is his spirit, his joy and passion for movement and the pursuit of joy – for dance as the defining point of happiness – that we have kept in our hearts and our spirits on our journey to the stage. Thank you, my beloved Kenny, thank you all. —Eleanor Bergstein MUSIC CREDITS BESAME MUCHO (Velasquez/Skylar). © Peer International Corp. Celebrating Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux

W

ith a celebrated performance career, masterful choreographic works and visionary leadership of Charlotte Ballet, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux has made a lasting impact on the ballet world and the Charlotte community. The 2016/2017 Season is Bonnefoux’s final season as president and artistic director of Charlotte Ballet, a position he came to in 1996, just a few years after Charlotte Ballet (then North Carolina Dance Theatre) moved to Charlotte from Winston-Salem. Charlotte Ballet’s 2016/2017 Season is in celebration of Bonnefoux. He selected the ballets that honor his past 20 years and look forward to the future of the company. Following is what Bonnefoux has planned this season:

INNOVATIVE WORKS Jan. 27-Feb. 18 • Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance Passion, intensity, movement … Bonnefoux created Innovative Works in 1997 to present contemporary ballet in an intimate venue. Twenty years later, Innovative Works is one of Charlotte Ballet’s most popular performances.

FALL WORKS Oct. 20-22 • Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts Bonnefoux brings the extraordinary Ohad Naharin to Charlotte Ballet. Naharin’s Minus 16 uses improvisation and his signature “Gaga” method to craft a unique experience. Resident Choreographer Dwight Rhoden, who Bonnefoux first invited to work with Charlotte Ballet in 2002, returns to present his ballet The Groove.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS April 27-29 • Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts Called “king of the pas de deux,” Associate Artistic Director Sasha Janes is premiering his Wuthering Heights ballet. Bonnefoux’s final season comes to an end similar to where he began. Wuthering Heights opens with a performance of contemporary choreographer Alonzo King’s MAP, the first ballet Bonnefoux commissioned for the company 20 years ago.

NUTCRACKER Dec. 3-23 • Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Thanks to a generous gift from the McColl family in honor of Jane Spratt McColl, Bonnefoux is collaborating with a world-renowned design team to reimagine his Nutcracker production with all new sets and costumes.

SLEEPING BEAUTY March 10-19 • Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts Sleeping Beauty is a treasured ballet classic and childhood favorite. Bonnefoux is joined by Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride to stage this opulent production.

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra

charlottesymphony.org

A Commitment to Education

F

or 85 years, the Charlotte Symphony has filled the city with music. Debuting in 1932, the organization has grown to a full-time professional orchestra led by internationally acclaimed Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. But the Charlotte Symphony is not just about performances in the concert hall. The Symphony serves the community by inspiring and teaching tomorrow’s music makers. The Symphony’s wide range of educational initiatives cultivate the musical interests and talents of youths, contributing to their academic achievement and unifying diverse areas of the community. Last season, the Symphony provided music education experiences for over 30,000 local children, and the musicians taught nearly 700 hours of music in classrooms across the community, including in high-need public schools. The Winterfield Youth Orchestra program at Winterfield Elementary – an ethnically diverse school serving a high-poverty area in east Charlotte – engages more than 80 students in a free after-school program. The El Sistema USA member program brings together Winterfield students, teachers, parents, Charlotte Symphony musicians and the community through performances that feature the students and special guest artists. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, five students from the Winterfield program were admitted into Northwest School of the Arts – the Charlotte area's only middle and high school public arts magnet – where the Symphony’s musicians coach nearly 200 students in band, orchestra and piano classes.

This program is just one way the Charlotte Symphony continues to work to ensure the future of music appreciation in the community. Here’s to the next 85 years.

Over 80 Winterfield Elementary students participate in the Symphony’s after-school orchestra program.
