BELK THEATER AT BLUMENTHAL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

THE ONLY “DOG DAYS” AT THE CYPRESS BELONG TO YOUR DOG s man’s best friend, I only want the best for my owner, and we sure got more than the best when we moved to The Cypress! When we bought our home, they customized it just for us (new hardwoods for him, a big yard for me). And they take care of everything for him, inside and out. There’s plenty of room for me to explore around the 65-acre campus and lots of time for me to catch up on my naps while he’s out at the Clubhouse or attending events with his friends. And the best part is the food! When he’s feeling generous, he’ll sneak me a delicious snack from one of the on-campus restaurants. The Cypress even has a healthcare center on campus if he needs it (and I hear it’s much nicer than a visit to the v-e-t). Yep, The Cypress life is far from “ruff,” come see for yourself… even if you’re a cat person.

‘Tis the Season to Sing!

I

Opera Carolina continues a 21-year tradition of caroling across the county

f you think opera is all high-brow and sung in Italian, you’ve never heard Opera Carolina’s chorus sing “Jingle Bells.” Charlotte-area residents will have several opportunities to hear members of the chorus sing beloved songs of the season – from holy hymns to jolly jingles. The season kicks off in November at the Southern Christmas Show and concludes with a mid-December concert just for families and staff at Levine Children’s Hospital. “We sing the standards everyone loves,” said Alina MacNichol, Opera Carolina’s director of customer service and community engagement and a 16-year veteran of the chorus. “We do ‘Silent Night,’ ‘Away in a Manger,’ ‘Joy to the World.’ We also sing international songs – like ‘Riu, Riu, Chiu’ (in Spanish), ‘Silent Night for all the World’ (which has seven languages represented), Greek carols and more.” Holiday music like “The Nutcracker Jingle” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is on some of the set lists, as is a jazzy version of “Jingle Bells.” The caroling group varies in size from 10 to 25, but it always contains members of the 60-voice chorus and the resident company. It’s impossible to say who loves this tradition more – audiences or carolers. “It’s a wonderful way to communicate our love for all types of music,” MacNichol said. “We think it’s particularly important now to communicate the spirit of hope and unity across cultures.”

This year, you can see the Opera Carolina Chorus throughout the Charlotte community. Following is the schedule, which is subject to change: Saturday, Nov. 18 • 6 p.m. Southern Christmas Show The Park Expo and Conference Center 800 Briar Creek Road, Charlotte, N.C. Sunday, Nov. 26 • 7 to 9 p.m. Holiday Concert St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church 5108 Kuykendall Rd, Charlotte, N.C. Friday, Dec. 1 • 7 p.m. Christmas in Davidson Davidson United Methodist Chapel 233 S. Main Street, Davidson, N.C. Tuesday, Dec. 12 • 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Kendra Scott fundraiser for Opera Carolina Kendra Scott store, SouthPark Mall Sharon and Fairview Rds. WHO’S WHO  IN  THE  CAST 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards.

In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for the Lunts. We Inspire Community. Something special happens when we experience a performance in a group – quite different from seeing it alone. We FEEL it more intensely. Shared experiences also build understanding and empathy among the participants. Diverse communities need collective experience more than ever. We inspire community … through the arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts has been entertaining and inspiring our community since 1992.

Your gifts make inspiration possible. BLUMENTHAL PERFORMING ARTS

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
