THE ONLY “DOG DAYS” AT THE CYPRESS BELONG TO YOUR DOG s man’s best friend, I only want the best for my owner, and we sure got more than the best when we moved to The Cypress! When we bought our home, they customized it just for us (new hardwoods for him, a big yard for me). And they take care of everything for him, inside and out. There’s plenty of room for me to explore around the 65-acre campus and lots of time for me to catch up on my naps while he’s out at the Clubhouse or attending events with his friends. And the best part is the food! When he’s feeling generous, he’ll sneak me a delicious snack from one of the on-campus restaurants. The Cypress even has a healthcare center on campus if he needs it (and I hear it’s much nicer than a visit to the v-e-t). Yep, The Cypress life is far from “ruff,” come see for yourself… even if you’re a cat person.

‘Bigger and Better’ Phantom to Play Charlotte in January

ameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera will return to Charlotte next month as part of a brand new North American Tour. Critics are raving that this breathtaking production is “bigger and better than ever before” and features a brilliant new scenic design by Paul Brown; Tony Award®-winning original costume design by Maria Björnson; lighting design by Tony Award-winner Paule Constable; new choreography by Scott Ambler; and new staging by director Laurence Connor. “Extraordinarily opulent. This Phantom’s storytelling and relationships have an electrifying tension,” raved the Chicago Sun-Times. “This tour is still supremely Phantom, with a slightly grittier aura,” adds the Tampa Bay Times. Based on the classic novel, “Le Fantome

de L'Opera” by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Chistine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. The production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, boasts many exciting special effects, including the show’s legendary chandelier. The beloved story and thrilling score – with songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You” and “Masquerade” – will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this Phantom one of the largest productions now on tour. Tickets are on sale now.

Alvin Ailey Program Touches on Timely Topics in February

“ E

… a timeless reminder of how far we've come, and how far we have to go. Lauren Warnecke, LA Times

ngage your emotions when Alvin Ailey® American Dance Theater, presented to the community by Wells Fargo, returns to Charlotte with contemporary works that touch on timely topics. Also included is the beloved classic “Revelations,” Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece that fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. “Choreographed on the brink of the civil rights movement in America, ‘Revelations’ was a radical act for its time,” said Lauren Warnecke with the LA Times. “Today, ‘Revelations’ is a history lesson through dance that evades antiquity; a timeless reminder of how far we've come, and how far we have to go.” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young AfricanAmerican modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents – as well as millions

more through television broadcasts, film screenings and online platforms. Before his untimely death in 1989, Alvin Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. Jamison, in turn, personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and The New York Times declared he “has injected the company with new life.”

Opera Carolina

Mistaken Identity and Murder In Opera Carolina’s Rigoletto, disguises and deceit lead to tragic consequences

I

f you like surprise endings – along the lines of the shocking twist M. Night Shyamalan gave The Sixth Sense – then the unexpected and shadowy places Giuseppe Verdi goes in Rigoletto may be right up your (dark) alley. The intricate plot is like something from Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal. The music? You probably know it without knowing you do, since it keeps popping up in pop culture. The famous aria “La Donna è Mobile” (“Women are Fickle”) – sung by the playboy Duke of Mantua – has been: • Recorded by the greatest tenors in the world … as well as Alvin & the Chipmunks; • Used on “Dancing with the Stars” as a backdrop to the Viennese Waltz; • Heard in a couple of Doritos commercials that ran during the Super Bowl; • Featured in an episode of “The Simpsons”; • Used in the soundtrack for the “Grand Theft Auto” video game. Verdi knew he had a hit on his hands with the justifiably famous aria. The song was rehearsed in secret, as everyone involved with the 1851 premiere figured it would soon become the catchy tune everyone

was humming. Like Beyoncé’s Lemonade, only a trusted few heard it in advance. Verdi based Rigoletto on the play The King Amuses Himself by Victor Hugo (Les Misérables). His tragic masterpiece is a revenge plan gone horribly wrong. Four things you need to know: 1. A curse placed on the Duke of Mantua and his hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, is triggered when Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda, falls for the Duke. 2. Mistaken identities are a recurring theme. Gilda tells her nurse she’s in love with a poor student, but the man she loves is really the Duke … in disguise. 3. Rigoletto – court jester by day – is no fool. He’s a loving father who’s merely playing the part of the joker to protect his daughter. 4. Leading up to the tragic ending, Gilda disguises herself as a young boy to save the Duke’s life. It would be criminal to give away the ending, so we’ll just leave it at this: Rigoletto’s revenge plan backfires in a gasp-worthy ending you will not have seen coming. Tickets start at just $21.

SYNOPSIS ACT ONE PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris. 1832, PARIS Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognise Valjean until he has gone.

17C

The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically-minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. ACT TWO The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The next day the rebels are all killed. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists he must go away. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s ‘father’ is a murderer and as proof produces a ring which he stole from the corpse the night the barricade fell. It is Marius’s own ring and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies.

We Inspire Community. Something special happens when we experience a performance in a group – quite different from seeing it alone. We FEEL it more intensely. Shared experiences also build understanding and empathy among the participants. Diverse communities need collective experience more than ever. We inspire community … through the arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts has been entertaining and inspiring our community since 1992.

Your gifts make inspiration possible. 130 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202 704.372.1000 • BlumenthalArts.org

WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT. WE’RE ALL THE SAME. When we need healing, we all want the same thing: expert care, tailored to our unique situation. Because when it comes to healthcare, everyone deserves the best.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
