Blumenthal’s New Encore Series Features Broadway’s Biggest Hits
B
lumenthal Performing Arts is pleased to announce its new Encore Series. Great Season Ticket seats are now available for five of Broadway’s all-time greatest hits, including Les Misérables, Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera and a fan favorite in Charlotte, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. Plus, back by popular demand are The Book of Mormon and the awe-inspiring visual artistry of Disney’s The Lion King. “The shows on the Encore Series are milestones in the history of Broadway and have all enjoyed wildly

successful runs here in Charlotte in years past. They are a perfect addition to our 25th anniversary season,” said Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. This series was added in response to Blumenthal’s 2017-18 PNC Broadway Lights Season Ticket sellout. More than 90 percent of current PNC Broadway Lights Season Ticket holders renewed their seats for the upcoming season, and they will be joined by more than 5,000 new subscribers. “We anticipated the PNC series could sell out to our Season Ticket buyers, so we wanted to make sure we had another great option for our fans,” said Gabbard. Encore Series buyers will enjoy some great benefits that come only with Season Tickets. Perks include securing the best seats at the best price, before single tickets go on sale and prices rise. Buyers can also choose an extended payment plan that allows them to pay for their Season Tickets in up to 10 installments (call 704335-1010 for this option). Encore Series Season Ticket holders will also enjoy the right to swap up to two of their shows for anything else coming in the 2016-17 season or the 2017-18 season. Swapping into 2017-18 PNC Broadway Lights shows, excluding Hamilton, will be available at a later date based on availability. See Encore Series Lineup on Next Page

THE ONLY “DOG DAYS” AT THE CYPRESS BELONG TO YOUR DOG s man’s best friend, I only want the best for my owner, and we sure got more than the best when we moved to The Cypress! When we bought our home, they customized it just for us (new hardwoods for him, a big yard for me). And they take care of everything for him, inside and out. There’s plenty of room for me to explore around the 65-acre campus and lots of time for me to catch up on my naps while he’s out at the Clubhouse or attending events with his friends. And the best part is the food! When he’s feeling generous, he’ll sneak me a delicious snack from one of the on-campus restaurants. The Cypress even has a healthcare center on campus if he needs it (and I hear it’s much nicer than a visit to the v-e-t). Yep, The Cypress life is far from “ruff,” come see for yourself… even if you’re a cat person.

A Note About the Plot
BB
enny is Mark and Roger’s former roommate. With the help of his wealthy father-in-law, Benny has bought the building in which Mark and Roger live, and the lot next door that is inhabited by a group of homeless people. Benny wants to build a high-tech cyber-arts studio on the property. Toward this end, he plans to clear the homeless from the lot and evict all the tenants from the building, including Mark and Roger.
Mark’s former lover, Maureen, schedules a performance protest of Benny’s scheme for midnight on Christmas Eve. Benny offers a deal to Mark and Roger: If they convince Maureen to stop her protest, they can stay in the building rent-free. At the end of Act I, Maureen stages her performance. A riot erupts in the lot, which Mark videotapes. Then Benny padlocks the building, locking out all the tenants. Act II begins on New Year’s Eve as Mark, Roger and friends attempt to break back into the building. The rest of the act follows the events of the year.

Don't Miss Opera Carolina’s 69th Season Lineup promises laughs, tears and plot twists
O
pera Carolina’s 69th season, made possible for the seventh consecutive season by Wells Fargo Private Bank, is filled with characters – some saints, some schemers – with something to hide. Their secrets inevitably lead to trouble. There are plenty of reasons to be part of Opera Carolina’s upcoming season. We’ve narrowed the list down to five. 1. You always root for the underdog. With his prominent nose, the main character in Cyrano is an unlikely romantic lead. But the duelist has heart and soul to spare … and a beautiful way with words. David DiChiera’s contemporary opera uses the premise of Rostand’s play. The tender hearted Cyrano loves the beautiful Roxane, but believes she could never fall for him. So, he lets another (more handsome) guy woo her – with his words! (Nov. 4 and 9) 2. You love a good plot twist. In Verdi’s tragedy, Rigoletto, a revenge plot goes heartbreakingly wrong. A curse placed on the playboy Duke by his court jester, Rigoletto, ends tragically after Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter falls for the Duke. As for the ending: You won’t see it coming. (Feb. 11, 15 and 17, 2018)
3. You like to laugh yourself silly. Silly is the right word for Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the sequel to The Barber of Seville. Getting to the altar has never been funnier or more fraught with complications. The action takes place on a single, manic day in Count Almaviva’s palace. The frisky count, his neglected wife, the object of his desire and her weary, but shrewd, fiancé create – and then navigate – chaos. All in the name of love. (April 15, 19 and 21, 2018) 4. Celebrate the Legacy of an American hero. Headlining the Opera Unlimited season is I Dream, a contemporary R&B work by Douglas Tappin sponsored by Novant Health. The powerful musical drama recounts the final 36 hours in the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King – an American icon and flawed man of God who taught a nation that only love can obliterate hate. (May 18-20, May 24-25) 5. Opera is surprisingly affordable. Single tickets begin at just $21. Youth (those under age 18) get a 50 percent discount. And Student Rush tickets are $10. Group discounts also are available. “Opera shows us the best and worst of the human condition,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor. “Love, jealousy, deceit, valor, honor and dishonor – it’s all part of a glorious season.”

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
