Alvin Ailey Returns in February With Performances You Feel

N

ow more than ever, the power dance is needed to bring people together, connected by their common humanity. Engage your emotions when Alvin Ailey® American Dance Theater, presented to the community by Wells Fargo, returns to Charlotte with contemporary works that touch on timely topics. Also included is the beloved classic “Revelations,” Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece that fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. “There are thrilling technical challenges – the audience knows and applauds them – but the dancers deliver them coolly, reminding us that this is not about stunts but the opposite: transcendence,” said dance critic Alastair Macaulay with The New York Times. “Choreographed on the brink of the civil rights movement in America, ‘Revelations’ was a radical act for its time,” added Lauren Warnecke with the LA Times. “Today, ‘Revelations’ is a history lesson through dance that evades antiquity; a timeless reminder of how far we've come, and how far we have to go.” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” that celebrates the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience

and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage. Before his untimely death in 1989, Alvin Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the company to unprecedented success. Jamison, in turn, personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and The New York Times declared he “has injected the company with new life.”

The Story of a Preacher From Atlanta Opera Carolina premieres the new rhythm and blues opera, I Dream

H

ow do you condense the life story of one of the most remarkable figures in American history into a two-hour work of art? If you’re composer/librettist Douglas Tappin, you focus on the last days of that person’s life and share the relevant history in flashbacks. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader of the civil rights movement, a brilliant orator, a complicated family man and a preacher who dared a nation to dream. “Don’t expect a historical representation,” said Opera Carolina General Director James Meena of the original pop opera. “This is a beautiful exploration of courage and of the human spirit." Opera fans shouldn’t miss what’s destined to become a contemporary classic. And, if you’ve never been to an opera, here’s why I Dream is an excellent starting point.

speech of his life – he recalls his triumphs and failures, the progress he’s made and the work still to be done. Dr. King’s dream – that justice would be a reality for all of God’s children – still resonates 50 years later. I Dream is a story about yesterday for today.

• It’s a hybrid of opera, jazz, classical, pop and other popular musical styles. • This year marks 50 years since King’s assassination. • It’s sung in English. In Tappin’s story, the character, Martin, has a recurring dream in which he sees a foreboding balcony. During the last hours of his life – as he makes his way to Memphis after giving the most emotionally draining

All That Jazz: Two Beloved Performers Come to Charlotte

Diana Krall

Diana Krall: Turn Up the Quiet World Tour Feb. 18 • Belk Theater Diana Krall’s mastery of the piano and stylistic approach to song shines through when she is on the stage. Krall’s “Turn Up the Quiet” world tour focuses on her newest album, a compilation of beloved pop and jazz classics as well as some of the singer’s fan favorites. Her career has reached international audiences. Her music has been featured in various television and film productions and she is the sole jazz singer to have had eight releases debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. With five Grammy Awards and numerous platinum and multi-platinum albums under her belt, Krall has earned a spot as one of the most distinctive jazz artists of her time. Influenced and impressed by her 10

father’s record collection and own affection for the piano, Krall began practicing music at an early age. Involvement in her high school band earned her a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, after which she pursued a music career, releasing her first album in 1993. With her effortless alto drawl and sultry interpretations of songbook staples, her music carries a subtle sensuality with odes to the glory days of big band and swing, and with hints of blues and folk alongside the jazz greats. Her control and delicate variances allow audiences access to Krall’s adept performance skill and evident love of music. Continued on Page 12

Tony Bennett March 15 • Ovens Auditorium After more than 60 years in the business, Tony Bennett has perfected the art of delighting audiences. The musical maven celebrated his 91st birthday this past year and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. Kennedy Center Honors, Humanitarian and Citizen of the World honors from the United Nations, 19 Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award are just a few of Bennett’s major career milestones. In November, he was awarded the prestigious 2017 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. With 10 million records sold in just the past decade, Bennett has produced countless jazz classics. Collaborations with stars like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Costello, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga have only expanded Bennett’s generational reach, a testament to the endurance of his sound

across audiences. A native of Queens, teenaged Bennett was known to sing while waiting tables, and later he performed with the Army band while serving during World War II. Upon his return, he performed in nightclubs until he caught the eye of Bob Hope who encouraged his singing career. Bennett was catapulted to the top of the charts in 1960s with the release of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” followed by hits like “I Wanna Be Around” and “The Good Life.” The 1994 release of his "MTV Unplugged" album led to a career resurgence that has continued to the present day. With a performance style that is both playful and stylish, Bennett is a perpetual charmer and an enduring showman. His signature croon lends to that timeless sound, a staple of modern American jazz.

Tablao Flamenco

An authentic Spanish experience for Charlotte By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

W

ith Tablao Flamenco, Charlotte audiences can be closer than ever to the action onstage. Flamenco, the iconic Spanish style of dance, instrumentals and spine-tingling vocals, is traditionally performed in small clubs throughout Spain but rarely seen that way in the U.S. “One thing we’ve found among American companies, they seem to focus on large scale productions and modern dance style of flamenco,” says Tom Gabbard, president of Blumenthal Performing Arts. That changes March 20-24, when Blumenthal transforms Booth Playhouse into an intimate, jazz club environment. Cabaret tables and chairs will surround a custom-made thrust stage extending into the house. Most of the dancing will take place here, bringing the performers toward the audience. Guests can enjoy drinks at their tables – which fill the entire front section of the orchestra bowl – or from traditional theater seating, available in other sections. “You feel the passion that’s an important part of the style and the intensity of it, and closer up you have the chance to appreciate the finer, smaller moves that you can’t really see (in a large theater setting),” says Gabbard. “It creates a much more intimate connection between the artist and the audience.” Tablao Flamenco will be a totally, original show featuring some of the country’s top performers and is co-produced by Blumenthal and Rhythm of the Arts, a New York-based company specializing in authentic, cross-cultural performances.

“There’s not anything else like this out there,” says Gabbard, who plans to make this an annual event in Charlotte and expects it to be replicated in other cities as well. With the flexibility of the newly renovated Booth Playhouse, seating can be arranged in a variety of ways. That’s sure to bring even more innovation to Blumenthal. “This does represent a style of presentation that we want to do more of,” says Gabbard. “We expect to see other things that will be done with this up-close, personal style. It opens up the ability to do many things that we haven’t been able to do before."

A flamenco dancer lights up the stage.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
