G

et ready for the return of Blumenthal’s hit jazz festival April 9-15, presented by The Leon Levine Foundation, with events all over uptown Charlotte. Expect more of what you love – like free public concerts, happy hours and late-night jams – plus extraordinary main stage performances from Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra With Wynton Marsalis. Main Stage Shows On April 13, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra With Wynton Marsalis performs The Music of Thelonious Monk at Knight Theater. Complex, tuneful and iconoclastic, Monk’s poetic tunes feature swinging rhythms and provide the perfect canvas for thoughtful improvisation. JLCO returns April 14 with a tribute to Leonard Bernstein at 100. Grammy Award-nominated composer Richard DeRosa and JLCO trombonist Vincent Gardner’s arrangements of Bernstein’s music will include well-known tunes from West Side Story, Candide and several unexpected gems.

The second line parade makes its way down the streets of Charlotte.

Outdoor Events From free lunchtime concerts all week long at the Levine Outdoor Pavilion to the joyful Second Line Parade marching up Tryon Street Saturday afternoon, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. The Jazz Garden Tent at Romare Bearden Park is back too, providing a perfect outdoor concert space (rain or shine!) with awesome skyline views.

Don’t Be Fooled by Ticket Brokers

Protect yourself and your purchase by buying only from authorized Blumenthal sources By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

I

t’s It’s a great time to be an arts fan in Charlotte. From concerts and comics to Broadway blockbusters and worldclass dance, more than 1,000 events play annually across Blumenthal’s stages. But for every hit show that comes, like Hamilton, Waitress or Trevor Noah, there’s an unfortunate down side: ticket brokers who resell seats at exorbitant prices to unsuspecting fans. One recent internet search brought up more than a dozen official-looking broker sites, charging as much as $650 per ticket to see the renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Co. in February. That’s nearly six times the face value price of legitimate VIP Orchestra seats to see the show!

And if the artificially high prices weren’t bad enough, there’s no guarantee that tickets you buy through brokers even exist. Blumenthal does not partner or cooperate with any brokers. In fact, it actively works to root them out by flagging suspicious ticket-buying activity and voiding any tickets known to break Blumenthal’s policy that prohibits the resale of tickets at more than $10 over the face value, plus taxes and fees. Price gouging is unfair for customers. “We want to protect affordability,” says Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard. “That’s the right thing to do.” And that’s why his team is working hard to eliminate this practice and inform consumers about the only official ways to purchase tickets for Blumenthal events.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ticket Sales How can I guarantee my tickets are valid and sold at face value? The only authorized ways to purchase tickets to events at Blumenthal are: • Online at BlumenthalArts.org or CarolinaTix.org.* • By phone at 704-372-1000. • In person at Belk Theater Box office (130 N. Tryon St., Charlotte). *For events at Ovens Auditorium, tickets are also sold through TicketMaster.com.

Why does using the official ticketing source matter? Ticket brokers want you to pay more for your tickets for their profit. They use images of Blumenthal venues and shows to look official. Look carefully at the fine print. Most 8

brokers don't even have tickets in hand but are advertising to find customers willing to pay inflated prices if they are somehow able to procure tickets. Are all tickets on unofficial ticketing sites fraudulent? Most resale tickets violate Blumenthal’s resale policy and are subject to cancellation. Blumenthal prohibits reselling a ticket for more than $10 above its face value, plus taxes and fees on the original purchase. Most of the tickets offered on other sites exceed that amount. If you buy a ticket that violates the resale policy, you risk seeing it canceled and made worthless. Continued on Next Page

Continued from Previous Page

Why can I purchase tickets for a show like Hamilton on resale sites when it’s not on sale yet at BlumenthalArts.org? YOU CAN’T! Brokers selling events not yet on public sale don’t have tickets and may never have them. You will pay upfront but have no guarantee your order will be filled. Even if you receive tickets, they may be voided if they violate Blumenthal’s resale policy (see above). How do resellers get tickets? Professional resellers acquire large quantities of tickets through computerized bots. Blumenthal reviews transactions daily to identify brokers and void their purchases. Even tickets that are legally purchased risk being voided if they have been resold for a price violating Blumenthal’s ticketing policy.

What if I can’t make an event and want to resell my tickets for a Blumenthal show? You can. Simply follow the policy described above. Season Ticket holders also can switch to another performance of the same show and may be able to swap to an entirely different show. Contact Blumenthal before reselling your tickets to see if you can reschedule and avoid the hassle of reselling. Why does Blumenthal discourage ticket resale? Tickets should go to real fans at fair prices and with a guarantee of validity. Resellers are only interested in driving up prices and making a profit from it. None of their upcharges go to the production, artists or creative personnel. Be Smart. Be Safe. Tell your friends too!

Opera Carolina

operacarolina.org

Which Character from The Marriage of Figaro Are You? As Opera Carolina’s presentation of The Marriage of Figaro approaches in April, you might be curious about which character is most like you. Take the Mozart Quiz and find out!

Answer one for each question:

Do you want to have a family?

a) I think family and marriage are overrated. I’d rather focus on my career. b) I would love to have a family but, my husband is not too fond of children. c) Having a big family would be great, and I think my future husband would agree. d) I love children and I know my fiancé agrees.

Describe your perfect evening. a) b) c) d)

Sitting by a fire with two beautiful women by my side. Cooking up my husband’s favorite meal and catering to his needs. A romantic dinner with my future husband. Going to the opera with my fiancé and singing along.

Where would you get married? a) b) c) d)

If I must, at a court house. I big traditional church wedding. A destination wedding on the beach would be absolutely breathtaking! Doesn’t matter -- as long as everyone is having a good time.

If you answered mostly A, then you are the Count. Unhappy with your love life, you are often thought of as a womanizer. Keep up the behavior and you will find yourself all alone.

If you answered mostly B, then you are the Countess. Still in love with your husband despite his mistreatment, you try to see the good in everything. Stop being a people pleaser and think about yourself.

If you answered mostly C, then you are the Countess’s maid, Susannah. A positive attitude about life and easy to be around. You are excited for your upcoming wedding! Continue spreading those positive vibes.

If you answered mostly D, then you are Figaro! You have a great sense of humor and happily engaged to the woman of your dreams. You think on your feet and know how to get out of sticky situations. Never stop being the life of the party.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
