Local Couple Say The Band’s Visit Is This Summer’s Must-see Show By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

F

riends often ask long-time Blumenthal subscribers and donors Rebecca Henderson and Mike Booe for show recommendations. “We love the traditional big band, big production musicals and we’re also drawn to plays,” says Henderson, who served on Blumenthal’s board of trustees for six years. These days, one show tops their list of must-sees: The Band’s Visit, coming to Charlotte Aug. 6-25. But here’s the thing – despite receiving rave reviews and earning 10 Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2018, many of their friends know little, if anything, about the show. Henderson and Booe are not entirely surprised. They had never heard of it themselves before participating in a special trip to New York last April, organized for major supporters of Blumenthal. Tom Gabbard, Blumenthal's president and CEO, had arranged for a talkback with Orin Wolf, the lead producer of The Band’s Visit. Wolf spoke in detail about the show’s journey from initial conception to full-scale Broadway production.

4

Based on a 2007 Israeli film, the musical focuses on the surprising and touching encounters between a group of Egyptian musicians who are stranded for one night in a remote Israeli village. “We were so bowled over by him and his back story about how he did the play,” says Booe. When Blumenthal’s Director of Donor Relations Stephanie Mudd asked if anyone wanted to see the next day’s matinee performance, he and Henderson didn’t hesitate. From opposite sides of the room, their hands shot up. “When you go on these trips, not only do you hear amazing stories about people and plays and things, but you get the opportunity to hear from the actual players in the industry,” says Booe, “... This was one of these opportunities, and it just blew us away.” Blumenthal has a special relationship with The Band’s Visit as a co-producer through the Independent Producers Network, a consortium of 40 leading touring Broadway presenters in the U.S. Continued on Page 5

and abroad. Gabbard currently serves as the group’s president.

What Makes The Band’s Visit Unique?

“In the post-Hamilton era, it defies all expectations of what a musical is supposed to be,” says Booe. “It’s quiet, intimate, personal … (but) I don’t think anyone can see it and not be changed by it.” The beautiful music, written by Tony winner David Yazbek, is also a highlight, and differs substantially from typical Broadway showtunes. It features middle eastern melodies and instruments played by the actors themselves. Finally, the story is special. Sophisticated with complex characters, it focuses on our shared humanity, despite

superficial differences. “The themes are universal,” says Henderson. “The love between a man and a woman. The love between a man and his child. All of these things are experienced regardless of race, ethnicity or gender.” “All of these characters are lonely, broken people,” says Booe, “Whether they’re the Egyptians or the Israelis, but they end up comforting each other in unexpected ways. Their differences notwithstanding, they’re all seeking love and companionship, and when it presents itself, they embrace it. “At the end of the play, as I stood applauding with all the audience, what I really wanted to do was go onstage and give the characters a silent hug.”

Eugene Onegin: Five Fast Facts Opera Carolina stages Tchaikovsky’s tragic love story in May

O

pera Carolina closes its 70th season with a Russian Classic. Eugene Onegin is everything opera should be: There’s love, death and heartbreak. Here are five essential facts about the blockbuster season finale. 1. A strong female lead is the heart of the opera. Beautiful, bookish Tatyana is rejected when she writes a love letter to Eugene, a wealthy playboy. Years later, he professes his love – but it’s too late. Tatyana chooses honor. She’s a fitting heroine to conclude #TheSheSeason.

5. The movie, The Talented Mr. Ripley, borrows from Onegin. Onegin, the character, is like Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), the rich dandy who lives a bohemian lifestyle. Director Anthony Minghella even stages a scene at an opera: Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) and his date (Cate Blanchett) are watching, of course, Eugene Onegin.

2. Onegin is one of opera’s bad boys. He’s rich, handsome and a little dangerous. 3. Truth is stranger than fiction. While the opera is based on fiction – an Alexander Pushkin novel – we can’t ignore what was happening in Tchaikovsky’s life while he was composing it. He had recently married a young admirer who had – wait for it – written him a love letter! It was a brief, unhappy marriage, meant to hide his homosexuality. 4. The lead actor in this Russian masterpiece is Russian. Baritone Alexey Lavrov says, “Eugene Onegin is the key masterpiece in Russian literature. We learn Onegin in schools, and every Russian knows it.”

New Choreographic Voices Within Charlotte Ballet

fter quickly selling out last season, Charlotte Ballet has extended its run of Choreographic Lab to three evenings. Secure your seats and experience creativity at this up-close and informal performance. Choreographic Lab was designed by Artistic Director Hope Muir as a mentorship program that gives young and aspiring choreographers the opportunity to present work to Charlotte audiences. Artists from Charlotte Ballet work closely with Hope on their compositions throughout the season for this unique opportunity. Hope commented on the inspiration behind this program, stating, “I wanted to see if there is a hidden talent within

Charlotte Ballet that we can develop, so we have something to feed back into the infrastructure of the company. I would love to discover the next big choreographer, and if that person happens to be in my studio right now as a dancer, I want to give them the opportunity to nurture that talent.” Hope envisions Choreographic Lab as an ongoing project that will ultimately position Charlotte Ballet as a hub for cultivating and showcasing new choreographic talent. “When people are actively creating, it gives a different energy to the building,” says Hope. Experience that energy while supporting the new choreographic voices from Charlotte Ballet during Choreographic Lab, May 16-18!

Charlotte Shout: Amazing Shows, Exceptional Experiences

harlotte City Partners and Blumenthal Performing Arts have combined forces to bring Charlotte two weeks of exceptional performances and experiences via Charlotte Shout, a celebration of art, music, food and ideas happening April 29May 11 across uptown Charlotte. Expect the unexpected! Witness giant, billowy bunnies popping up on The Green on South Tryon Street; aerial artists scaling the walls of the government center; a circus tent and amazing acrobats popping up in First Ward Park; and three big main-stage concerts at Romare Bearden Park. And that’s just a taste of what Shout will bring! “Shout will feature exceptional programming from around the world and around the corner,” said Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. Along with an array of international artists, the festival will feature some of Charlotte’s own stars as well as opportunities for audiences to participate. Shout events will happen indoors and out across uptown Charlotte. First Ward

Park will host a number of family friendly programs. Spirit Square will be bustling with a variety of shows in its theaters. Levine Center for the Arts and Romare Bearden Park are other locations that will be jampacked with shows and special experiences. Shout kicks off with the debut of “Intrude,” an interactive public art display featuring giant white bunnies and six days of fabulous jazz performances at the Charlotte Jazz Festival. Shout is also the culmination of CLT250, the yearlong celebration of Charlotte’s 250th anniversary. “Center City Partners and Blumenthal have spent time studying international festivals,” said Gabbard. “We’re working together to bring the best of that experience to Charlotte in Shout.” With dozens of shows and experiences on tap over the 14 days, the festival will provide something for everyone in the community. Many shows and experiences will be free and many others will offer family friendly prices. For a complete festival lineup and detailed information, visit BlumenthalArts.org/Shout.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
