Y

ou know the beloved movie. Now, imagine it coming to life live on stage! Frank Farmer, former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Frank and Rachel each expect to be in charge – what they don’t expect is to fall in love. A breathtakingly romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features a host of irresistible classics including “Queen of the Night,” “So Emotional,” “One Moment in Time,” “Saving All My Love,” “Run to You,” “I Have Nothing,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and one of the biggest selling songs of all time – “I Will Always Love You.” If you’re not sold already, following are three good reasons why you simply can’t miss this PNC Broadway Lights show, coming to Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center March 7-12.

1 2

Based on the smash hit film, the awardwinning musical will star Grammy® Award-nominee and R&B superstar Deborah Cox!

The show features more than just one standout vocalist. In fact, check out what NorthJersey.com reviewers said! “One of the many unexpected pleasures of The Bodyguard is that it offers two divas for the price of one. Between the two of them, Deborah Cox and Jasmin Richardson, who plays her sister, take turns blowing the roof off …”

3

What show gives you powerhouse vocalists singing irresistible classic hits and a thrilling roller-coaster ride all in one show? The Bodyguard does! This show is quite the unexpected thriller and will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Share Some Laughs With the Charlotte Symphony

omedy meets composition next month as the Charlotte Symphony presents The Second City Guide to the Symphony, Feb. 4 at Belk Theater. Hosted by the hilarious Colin Mochrie from “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The Second City Guide to the Symphony is a light-hearted blend of sketch comedy and music, including hilarious original lyrics set to orchestral songs, plus your fill of the greats, from Mozart to Mahler! The Second City theater and improv school in Chicago has been an incubator of some of the world’s top comedic minds, including Martin Short, Tina Fey, John Candy, Stephen Colbert, Jim Belushi and many more. This concert takes a satirical, often edgy, but loving look at the musicians, various composers, and even YOU, the audience. Maestro Albert-George Schram, who’s no slouch himself in the comedy department, will conduct this one-of-a-kind night of great music and lots of laughs.

Colin Mochrie

“A brilliantly written, skillfully staged and impeccably performed piece of musical theatre.”

What’s the Point of Pointe Shoes?

I

n Charlotte Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty, running March 10-18 at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts, the cast of more than 80 dancers includes many ballerinas wearing pointe shoes. Alessandra Ball James, who will dance the role of Sleeping Beauty, answered questions about these magical shoes.

Q: What are pointe shoes and what’s the point of wearing them? Pointe shoes are special shoes that allow ballerinas to dance on their toes. Ballet is about creating beautiful lines and shapes with our bodies, and pointe shoes extend our lines and give a sense of lightness and the illusion that we’re floating on air.

to flatten the top and super glue the tips so they last longer. Q: How long does each pair of pointe shoes last? It depends on what I’m dancing. For Sleeping Beauty, which includes a lot of intense pointe work, I’ll use about 10 pairs of shoes. I typically go through 35 pairs a season.

Q: How old were you when you started dancing on pointe? I was 11, but the age can vary. Dancers start pointe after several years of training to ensure that we’re strong enough to go on pointe. Q: What are pointe shoes made of? Pointe shoes are made of layers of fabric and glue covered with satin. The tip of the shoe is a hard box made of dense fiber, cardboard or paper. Our pointe shoes are custom fit for us, and we have techniques to break-in the shoes. To get my shoes ready I cut the shank (a box within the front end of the shoe that encases and supports our toes) so it breaks where my arch is, for a more flattering shape. This also enables me to wear the shoe for longer. Then, I step on the shoe
