Audiences are given a behindthe-scenes peek at who these four musicians were on the verge of great success. While MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET dramatizes the jam session, Jerry Lee Lewis, the last survivor, opens up about that day with a fascinating story. In Lewis’s account of that famous night, Presley asked Phillips to meet Lewis. According to Lewis, Presley was interested in hearing his cover of Hank Williams’s “You Win Again.” “He just kept begging me, ‘Do that again,’” Lewis said. “I said, ‘How ‘bout you do it?’ He just twisted his leg around. I said, ‘Is that it?’” This is just one moment that helps characterize these four

n Dec. 4, 1956, the stars aligned when Sam Phillips, dubbed “The Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” brought together legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis at Sun Records in Memphis for an impromptu, once-in-a-lifetime recording session. The result was one of the greatest moments in rock ‘n’ roll history. The recording session is brought to life in the Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts this November in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, featuring hits such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and more. famous musicians, who have been immortalized in popular culture. It’s easy to forget that they were just young ingénues and fans of each other. And it seems MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET has Lewis’s approval. In Oct. 2010, Lewis, who turned 76 on Sept. 29, took to the stage at the Nederlander Theatre with his Tony Award®-winning counterpart Levi Kreis to perform “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” for a packed crowd. Now, rock ‘n’ roll fans will have a chance to catch the tour when it visits Charlotte for a three-week engagement in the Knight Theater. It’s your chance to get up close and personal with four extraordinary artists and their music.

ne of the most instantly recognizable and renowned classical pieces of all time, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is “the most sublime noise that has ever penetrated into the ear of man,” (E.M. Forster). From the opening motif, representative of the knock of fate which permeates throughout the piece, to the beautiful amber theme and variations of the second movement to the lumbering scherzo of the third, the piece is a hallmark of Beethoven’s musical ingenuity and the achievements of mankind.

listener is assuredly stirred, deeply and intimately, by a feeling that is none other than that unutterable portentous longing, and until the final chord-indeed, even in the moments that follow it-he will be powerless to step out of that wondrous spirit realm where grief and joy embrace him in the form of sound.”- E.T.A. Hoffman Innovative in both technical and emotional ways, the work has imprinted itself into the classical repertoire and inspired generations of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Mahler.

November 17, 18, and 19th Christopher Warren-Green will lead the Charlotte Symphony in performing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The composer’s Egmont Overture and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 will also be presented. The program selections reflect Bach’s influence on Beethoven’s stylings, specifically his use of repetition in thematic material. “How this wonderful composition, in a climax that climbs on and on, leads the listener imperiously forward into the spirit world of the infinite! No doubt the whole rushes like an ingenious rhapsody past many a man, but the soul of each thoughtful

summer at The Chautauqua Institution in N.Y. The ballet was a success with audience and reviewers, with reviewer Anthony Bannon writing, “Chances like the one Janes presented don’t come by very often. This was the real thing, and a good bit of the audience knew it, and took to their feet to give it mighty applause.” Resident Choreographer Dwight Rhoden is presenting an encore of his ballet Alleged Dances, first performed by the company in 2006. Alleged Dances pays tribute to legendary choreographer George Balanchine and was called a “…showcase for the strength, power, and stamina of the dancers” by reviewer Kate Dobbs Ariail. “Moving Innovative Works to Dance Theatre’s home gives us the ability to try some new things we’re excited about,” said Bonnefoux. “We’re taking Innovative Works from a performance to an experience, bringing the audience closer to the dancers than ever before.” The first two weeks of Innovative Works performances will include food and drinks served throughout the evening, followed by dessert and coffee with the dancers after the performance. “We want to better connect the audience with the dancers and artists,” said Singleton. “We’re using the freedom of our performance space to make that possible.”

Tryon Theater at the Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride Center for Dance in uptown Charlotte. Since the Center for Dance opened in June 2010, the 200-seat theater has been used for School of Dance performances and special events, but Innovative Works will be the first professional company performance. “We heard from the audience and dancers that they enjoy an intimate space for Innovative ,” said NC Dance Theatre Works,” Executive Director Doug Singleton. “The dancers thrive off the energy from the audience, and audience members often tell me how engaging it is to be close enough to the dancers to hear their breath.” A signature series in Dance Theatre’s season, Innovative Works features diverse and contemporary choreography. This year choreographers Mark Diamond and David Ingram are creating new ballets for the series. Choreographer Sasha Janes is presenting his ballet Last Lost Chance, which he choreographed and debuted this

about cHaRLEs aDDaMs The musical The Addams Family is inspired by the creations of the legendary American cartoonist Charles Addams, who lived from 1912 until 1988. In 1933, when he was just 21, his work was published in The New Yorker, and over the course of nearly six decades, he became one of the magazine’s most cherished contributors. Addams is most widely known for his characters that came to be called The Addams Family, a group that evolved into multiple television shows, motion pictures and now this Broadway musical. The majority of his cartoons are

occupied by hundreds of other characters, but there is little doubt that those that come to life on this stage are his most beloved creations. Over 15 books of his drawings have been published around the world, including the new collection, The Addams Family: An Evilution. Addams’ works appear in a number of prestigious permanent collections including The New York Public Library, The Museum of the City of New York and The Library of Congress. star Power and Technical sizzle electrify the stage

O

pera Carolina’s 63rd season – underwritten by a generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Private Bank – opens with star power and technical sizzle as opera superstars Denyce Graves and Italian tenor Antonello Palombi take the stage in a new production of Verdi’s highly charged popular opera, Il Trovatore. Audiences have come to expect nothing less than sensational performances from the exceptional Ms. Graves and the powerful Mr. Palombi. These great artists, along with co-stars Lisa Daltirus and Michael Corvino, are complimented by dynamic new scenery that transforms this operatic classic. “We’ve invested in the best technology to revolutionize the Denyce Graves returns as Azucena traditional opera experience, energizing the scenery with kaleidoscopic visuals that replace conventional physical scenery,” said Michael Baumgarten, director of production for Opera Carolina. “Utilizing six digital video projectors, we’ve created a set with ever-changing imagery that reinvents Il Trovatore.” Sparks ignite as romance, rivalry, and revenge play out against this

creative backdrop that accentuates the resplendent talent of Daltirus, Graves, Palombi, and Corvino along with the Opera Carolina Chorus and the Charlotte Symphony. Italian tenor Antonello Palombi performs around the world to tremendous acclaim, performing each of the last three seasons at Milan’s famed Teatro alla Scala in Aida, Il Trittico and Il Trovatore. USA Today identifies mezzo soprano Denyce Graves as “an operatic superstar of the 21st century,” and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution exclaims, “if the human voice has the power to move you, you will be touched by Denyce Graves.” Opera Carolina’s new production of Il Trovatore performs over two weekends: October 15, 20 and 23 at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. A 25 percent discount is available for season ticket holders, a 50 percent Youth Discount, plus $10 Student Rush tickets and various Group Discounts. For ticket information, call 704.372.1000 or visit www.operacarolina.org. The performance presenting sponsor for Il Trovatore is Hearst Corporation.
