Blumenthal infused $35,709,810 into our economy this past season. Since the Blumenthal’s doors opened in 1992 more than 9.2 million people have attended an event, performance, activity or meeting at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Spirit Square or the Knight Theater.

A Big, Bright, Beautiful Season • Blumenthal Performing Arts maintained solid season subscription sales for the 2010-2011 season despite a sluggish economy. More than 7,500 full season subscriptions were sold and prior year subscribers renewed at almost 70%. Season subscribers also purchased more than 8,000 additional tickets as ‘add-ons.’ A year-round telemarketing program continues to help drive new business, while strong renewals testify to the high quality of our shows and the overall experience at the theater. Samplers (packages of three to five shows that may include both Broadway and special attractions) also continue to be important. Almost 11,000 tickets were sold as part of Sampler packages last year.

• Blumenthal worked with the Arts & Science Council on a Catalyst Grant, in which the organizations combined their large databases and studied them to see where new opportunities for audience and donor growth might exist. Blumenthal conducted a special marketing program to ASC African-American donors who had not attended a show at Blumenthal previously. The Blumenthal test was a great success, with more than 1,000 new buyers attracted to DREAMGIRLS, DrumLine Live, CATS and SHREK THE MUSICAL.

IN THE HEIGHTS, winner of four 2008 Tony Awards® and the 2008 Grammy Award® for Best Musical Show Album, completed a successful eightshow engagement in Charlotte by grossing in the top 30% of markets presenting weeklong engagements. Charlotte finished with the 15th highest single week gross on the tour.

Blumenthal teamed up with several Broadway shows to help raise money for wonderful organizations. Close to $9,000 was raised, with monies going to the Humane Society of Charlotte, Humane Society of York County and the American Red Cross to assist in the Japan relief efforts. The backstage area of the Booth Playhouse was transformed into a theater venue for the multiweek run of Live from WVL Radio Theatre: It’s a Wonderful Life. The show was such a big success, in reviews and attendance that we’re bringing the show back for another 16 performances in the same location this year.

Charlotte audiences saw Alice Ripley reprise her Tony Award®-winning role in the acclaimed musical NEXT TO NORMAL when it played in the Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts. Charlotte was one of only 17 markets that presented the show.
Blumenthal continued to create opportunities for local arts fans to connect with each other through our affinity groups. We held 56 affinity programs last year that targeted young adults (Club Blume), students (Charlotte Live!), the LGBT community (Out on the Town) and educators (Teachers Lounge).
My favorite show from last season was definitely BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL. The story was inspirational…all I wanted to do was get up and dance.

Behind-the-Scenes Junior Ambassador and Internship Program The Junior Ambassador Program is dedicated to inspiring young people to become actively involved in helping the community through volunteering. Eleven individuals from local colleges participated in Blumenthal Performing Arts Internship Program. Each intern received handson, field experience and exposure to the inner workings of a performing arts center and a successful business environment.
Volunteer Services
Broadway hit MARY POPPINS played four weeks at the Belk Theater. Original UK Tour star Caroline Sheen reprised her role as “Mary Poppins,” while original company member Dominic Roberts assumed the role of “Bert.”
A total of 600 (147 men/453 women) volunteers serve patrons in our theater box offices, in ushering and seating patrons, in administrative capacities and helping with other cultural events sponsored by Blumenthal Performing Arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts continues to offer complimentary backstage tours of all six theater spaces. In 2010-2011, over 450 guests enjoyed the behind-the-scenes adventure. During the past fiscal year, volunteer services recruited, interviewed and trained 218 new volunteers. They served a combined total of 39,757.13 hours. Based on the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, volunteers saved Blumenthal $288,239 through their service. We are proud that our volunteer roster contains individuals from all ethnic backgrounds and nationalities, from South America, Mexico, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
“During the [marketing] internship I was able to work on several projects including the annual Tony Party, social media profiles, contests, press releases and grassroots marketing campaigns. One highlight of my internship was being able to attend media appearances with the press team and cast members. Overall, the projects I worked on had an impact and it was nice to see the outcome of my work for the first time. I feel honored that the marketing department was impressed with me during my internship and has asked me to become a staff member.”

Reaching Out The Broadway Experience Twelve industrious and economically challenged students from Charlotte area schools went on a trip of a lifetime through a Blumenthal Performing Arts program made possible by a generous gift from The Doctor Family Foundation. The second annual Broadway Experience trip was March 25-27. During the expenses-paid trip, participating students saw War Horse and Wonderland, got backstage tours and toured New York City attractions.
Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship Mandy Wagoner of East Gaston High School and Morgan Wilson of Northwest School of the Arts were awarded the second annual Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship. They will each receive a $10,000 renewable college scholarship from The Doctor Family Foundation.
Broadway Junior Theater Celebration
The second annual Broadway Experience trip took place March 25-27. The Blumenthal set aside 550 tickets for this year’s ticket scholarship program.
The ticket scholarships were made possible by generous gifts from the Duke Energy Foundation, The Doctor Family Foundation and the Broadway League. The three productions chosen for this year’s program were all part of the Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series: WHITE CHRISTMAS, IN THE HEIGHTS and SHREK THE MUSICAL. In addition to receiving highly discounted (Family First Nights) or free tickets (Duke Energy), each family participated in special pre-show activities presented by Blumenthal’s Education Department. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to attend post-show Q&As with cast members and production personnel from each show.

School Shows & Transportation Subsidy for CMS Schools With the reality of severe cuts in fine arts budgets at schools, Blumenthal’s Education team helped fill the gap by providing “school shows” for Charlotte area schools. (A school show is a weekday matinee mini-performance of a Blumenthal-presented show that typically has evening and weekend performances for the general public.) Specific grade levels are targeted for each show in accordance with show content and educational opportunities. Examples of recent school show performances include internationally acclaimed dance companies, MOMIX and Garth Fagan Dance, Omimeo: Black Light Magic and Charlotte’s own Northwest School of the Arts production of The Music Man. Thanks to an ASC Education Support Grant, Blumenthal implemented a School Show Transportation Subsidy for financially strapped CMS schools. This subsidy, which actually pays all transportation expenses, enabled us to triple the number of school shows during the 2010-2011

school year and achieve an average student/teacher registration of 92% of total seating capacity. For several shows we were “sold out” and maintained a waiting list in case of cancellations.
Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards
The Blumeys
The Blumenthal’s first high school musical theater awards program will launch in the spring of 2012; patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards®. The performance of each participating school’s spring musical will be viewed and evaluated by a panel of three judges. In addition to awarding points according to detailed guidelines, each judge will produce performance and production commentaries for each school. The awards process will recognize outstanding achievement in thirteen areas.

Connecting Artists with Students During world-renowned Garth Fagan Dance Company’s stay in Charlotte, the Education Department sponsored master classes for dance students at four high schools and three colleges. They also provided a session for local middle, high school and community dance teachers. At each class, one of Fagan’s dancers verbally instructed participants as a second dancer demonstrated each movement and routine. A total of 180 local students and teachers participated in the eight master classes.

Second Annual Camp Blumenthal is a Success
Girl Scouts from across western North Carolina attended the - Jaye Niel, BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL second Camp Blumenthal. The Lunch and Learn attendee scouts attended the Friday evening performance of CATS, and were greeted by several cast members after the show. The girls spent the night in the Belk Theater lobbies to wake up Saturday morning for three workshops. They learned the history of theatrical masks, several techniques on using dramatic makeup and had a behind-the-scenes hands-on technical tour of the Booth Playhouse.
BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL School Event Two of the actors who shared the role of Billy Elliot were on hand with Oscar® nominee and Tony Award®-winning Lee Hall to participate in a Q&A and deliver a jaw-dropping performance of “Electricity.” 14 schools tuned in via webcast. Nearly 400 students were in attendance and received Billy jump ropes. Mike Collins emceed the event.
31 Students toured the Blumenthal theaters, participated in Q&A sessions with members of various Blumenthal departments and received a free ticket to see IN THE HEIGHTS.

Making a Difference Don and Mary Doctor Blumenthal celebrates three years of partnership with the Doctor Family Foundation. The Doctor Family Foundation supports education programs with a Broadway emphasis. Alarmed by the cuts in arts education across the country, the Doctors decided to help artistically talented and ambitious young people with limited resources achieve their dreams. Since 2009 The Doctor Family Foundation has fully funded a regional Broadway Junior Theater Celebration held at the Blumenthal. In 2011, student and teacher participation almost doubled over the previous year (over 1,200 in attendance), requiring expansion from a one-day to a two-day event.

Corporate Partners Campaign Exceeds Goal Our local volunteer executives, who commit themselves to networking with Charlotte and regional businesses leaders to solicit funding for the exposure of the Blumenthal and its mission, make the campaign possible. Last year the campaign exceeded its goal, bringing in over $400,000 from the corporate community. Leading a team of 40 enthusiastic, committed executive volunteers for the second year in a row was James Downs of Crosland Southeast.
