scenes. Each participating school is allowed to nominate two students who will submit a portfolio highlighting their work. The student could have worked in stage management, sound design, lighting design or technical direction. Judges will review each portfolio to select a winner. Maureen O’Boyle, WBTV evening news anchor, will return to host the event along with Amy Burkett, general manager at WTVI PBS Charlotte. WTVI will record the ceremony and air a two-hour special about The Blumey Awards, including performances from the ceremony, interviews with participants, behindthe-scenes footage and a look at the rehearsal process. The air date will be announced by WTVI at a later time.
lumenthal Performing Arts will host its fifth annual High School Musical Theater Awards, also known as The Blumey Awards, presented by Wells Fargo, on Sunday, May 22, in Belk Theater. Since its inaugural ceremony in 2012, the award program has grown exponentially. This year marks the first time the ceremony will be recorded for broadcast television. Forty-three schools are confirmed to participate this year, which is more than double the 20 schools that participated the first year. With a school from Catawba County participating for the first time, the number of counties represented has increased to nine. Opera Is Real Life … Set to Music 2016/17 season honors Italian opera and showcases timeless tales
T
Next up in January is La Traviata (Jan. 22, 26 and 28), that timeless story of a love forbidden because of class differences. Think of it as the precursor to Richard Gere’s modern-day nobleman rescuing Julia Roberts’ Vivian in Pretty Woman ... without the phony Hollywood ending. April brings an operatic take on a Western (April 23, 27 and 29). In La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the West), Puccini demonstrates that an Italian art form dating back to the late 1500s can be an effective medium for telling the quintessential American story. In this case, a poker player falls for a gun-totin’, saloonownin’ lady in a tumbleweed town during the California Gold Rush. And, Opera Carolina’s Street Opera Initiative will continue to pop up in unexpected places next season. You might be in a small theater, church or a coffee shop when a diva suddenly breaks into song. This season – made possible by Wells Fargo Private Bank’s sponsorship – is designed to show the community that opera is rooted in real life, but set to soaring music.
o the uninitiated, opera may seem like little more than one death scene after another. No other art form revels as much in a dramatic demise. But at its heart, opera is real life with a glorious soundtrack. And Opera Carolina’s upcoming season demonstrates that. “If you’ve ever enjoyed slapstick, cartoons, a love story or spaghetti Westerns, you’ll find something to love during our 2016/17 season,” said Maestro James Meena. “Opera is based on ageless stories,” said Meena, Opera Carolina’s general director and principal conductor. “Sometimes, those stories are literally true, as in the case of French courtesan Marie Duplessis, the inspiration behind Verdi’s La Traviata.” The main season opens in October (Oct. 22, 27 and 30) with Rossini’s madcap The Barber of Seville, a work so embedded in popular culture that its main musical theme and big numbers have been sampled by Bugs Bunny. A busybody barber is intent on helping one man land the woman of his dreams, but multiple suitors are vying for her, which leads to comic complications.

Ballet Is in Bloom at Spring Works
“I
mprovisational, electric, high energy” – that’s how choreographer Dwight Rhoden describes the new ballet he is creating for Charlotte Ballet’s Spring Works. Rhoden, Charlotte Ballet’s resident choreographer, is also the director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet in NYC. Since 2006, Rhoden has traveled to Charlotte several times a year to create new works for the company. “Charlotte Ballet is strong and versatile,” said Rhoden. “I am always looking for new ways to challenge the dancers and the audience. “ For his new ballet at Spring Works, Rhoden is working with the local Jazz Arts Initiative, which will have musicians playing live during his piece. “I love the concept of creating a ballet that mimics the way a jazz ensemble would play in a club, with different sets of music that represent a progression of jazz through the years,” said Rhoden. “And because jazz is free-form, the dancers have the opportunity to be spontaneous and inspired by the live music.” Spring Works, a triple bill, also features choreographer Sasha Janes’ We Danced Through Life, set to Dvořák. Janes, called “king of the pas de deux,” choreographed his ballet as a joyous remembrance of life and love. Legendary ballerina and Charlotte Ballet Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride is restaging George Balanchine’s Who Cares? Charlotte Ballet last performed the ballet at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014, when McBride was an honoree. Who Cares? is set to some of Gershwin’s most popular melodies, such as “The Man I Love” and “I Got Rhythm.” Photo by Jeff Cravotta

Q&A With Dixie Longate Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top Comes to Booth Playhouse This Summer
D
ixie Longate, of Dixie’s Tupperware Party fame, returns to Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center July 5-24 for a brand new show: Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull and 16 Other Things I Learned While I Was Drinking Last Thursday. Here's what she had to say about bringing her new show to Charlotte.
about plastic all over again. I got a crap ton more to say. Q: We notice there’s mention of a mechanical bull in the title of the new show … will you actually be riding one? Dixie: You will be joining me in my friend’s honky tonk this time around, so of course everything that you expect to see while you are out for a healthy night of drinking, you will see when you join me. What kind of honky tonk worth its salt wouldn’t have a bar ... and a mechanical bull. You’ll be able to smell the whiskey and bad decision-making right when you walk past the saloon doors.
Q: Charlotte LOVES you and your tupperware party! Can you tell us what we can expect in your new show? Dixie: You know that I am happier than a stripper pole in the Magic Mike movie to be coming back to Charlotte. I had so much fun when I was there last summer that when y’all called ... I actually put down my drink to answer the phone. Being raised in the Deep South, I realized that some of my upbringing is a wee bit different from many of the people that I meet, so I figured it was time to share some of the rowdiness of my hometown and some homespun wisdom from my Momma. This new story is all about dusting off the cobwebs and living better than you do.
Q: Can you describe Never Wear a Tube Top in just three words? Dixie: Probably not. I mean “Wisdom through booze” would probably be the best way to say it, but I am not known as a lady of few words. I tend to always have my mouth moving, but that is what gets me so many dates. But I think that is the basis of my story. It’s my outlook on life as told through the bottom of a Jack bottle. You’ll leave the show knowing a little bit more about yourself and wanting to go on one hell of an adventure in life.
Q: Are you still selling Tupperware? Will it be available to purchase at the upcoming show? Dixie: Well, I am the Tupperware lady, so there are always a few plastic bowls within a few feet of me it seems. This new show really ain’t even about Tupperware, but that don’t mean that I won’t help you out with your food storage needs. I’m a giver, after all. But I don’t want you to think for one second that I am just going to be chatting

Written in a mixture of Latin, “middle-high” German and medieval French, the work is broken down into three musical sections: “Springtime,” “In the Tavern” and “The Court of Love.” Listen for countertenor Lawrence Zazzo’s solo as he is tasked with portraying a “dying swan” being roasted on a spit in the tavern. STOMP
TOMP, a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, was created in Brighton, U.K., in the summer of 1991. It was the result of a 10year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. They first worked together in 1981 as members of the street band Pookiesnackenburger and the theater group Cliff Hanger. Together, these groups presented a series of street comedy musicals at the Edinburgh Festival throughout the early '80s. After two albums, a U.K. TV series and extensive touring throughout Europe, Pookiesnackenburger also produced the highly acclaimed “Bins” commercial for Heineken lager. The piece was originally written and choreographed by Luke as part of the band’s stage show. It proved to be the starting point for STOMP’s climactic dustbin dance. In 1986, Luke and Steve created an eightminute "percussive movie" for Bette Midler’s HBO special Mondo Beyondo. Between 1987 and 1990, Luke staged, as artistic and musical director, four large-scale outdoor events, including “Beat the Clyde,” which involved floating a drum orchestra on a pontoon in the center of Glasgow. The largest of these events, “The Heineken Hove Lagoon Show,” involved a 120-piece drum orchestra featuring the Brighton Festival Chorus and a full orchestral string section. In 1991, Steve and Luke first created STOMP, previewing at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre and premiering at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, where it became The Guardian’s “Critics’ Choice” and won The Daily Express “Best of the Fringe Award”. Between 1991 and 1994, the original cast of STOMP played to capacity audiences around the world: from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Dublin to Sydney. The touring culminated in a sell-out season at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January 1994, where STOMP received an Olivier nomination for Best Entertainment and won Best Choreography in a West End Show. An expanded version of STOMP, involving up to 30 cast members, was originally created for the Brighton Festival, U.K., and was subsequently presented in Melbourne, Australia. It was most recently seen in September 1995, open-air, at the Acropolis in Athens and at the Royal Festival Hall, London. This production broke all box office records, which had been
established by Frank Sinatra in 1972. STOMP began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February 1994 and quickly went on to win both an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for Most Unique Theatre Experience. By the summer of 1994, the first American cast was in place at the Orpheum, freeing the original cast for sell-out tours of North America and Japan. In the summer of 1995, two more American productions were created for the sole purpose of U.S. touring, which continues to this day. U.S. casts have also debuted STOMP in Chile, Brazil and Korea. Meanwhile, a fifth STOMP company, also touring from the U.K., was formed in 1997 and has consistently toured the world ever since. This company presented STOMP for the first time in Scandinavia and South Africa, and has been a regular visitor to Germany, Holland and France. Another STOMP production opened in San Francisco in May 2000, running for two and a half years. The original cast of STOMP has recorded music for the Tank Girl movie soundtrack and appeared on the Quincy Jones album, Q’s Jook Joint. A soundtrack recorded by Steve and Luke for the Showtime movie Riot was released in the spring of 1997. STOMP has also been featured in a number of commercials, including Coca-Cola’s “Ice Pick” and numerous spots for Target stores in the U.S. and Toyota in Japan. STOMP also created the "Mr. Frears’ Ears" series of short films created for Nickelodeon, whilst “Brooms,” a 15-minute short based around the opening routine, was nominated for an Academy Award. “Brooms” was also selected for screening at Robert Redford’s Sundance Festival and for competition at the Cannes Film Festival. STOMP made a special appearance at the Academy Awards in March 1996, with an original piece involving the live synchronization of classic film clips and onstage action, featuring 20 performers from all five productions. In the summer of 1997, Steve and Luke created and directed STOMP OUT LOUD, a 45-minute television special for HBO, which combined stage material with new pieces created for TV. It was premiered in the USA in December 1997 and subsequently received four Emmy nominations for direction, sound mixing, multicamera editing and art direction. 1998 saw the release of the STOMP OUT LOUD video and
17K
STOMP DVD around the world. Another unique blend of live action and film footage was created for the Emmy Awards, in which STOMP effectively performed with Spike Jones! STOMP performed after midnight on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at U.S. President Clinton’s millennium celebrations. During 2000, a "Sesame Street" special, “Let’s Make Music,” a collaboration between STOMP and the Muppets, was released on TV and video in North America. Luke and Steve began production of their IMAX movie Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey in Brazil during Carnival 2000 and completed it in the summer of 2002. Pulse takes the IMAX audience on a spectacular global journey, featuring performances from Kodo, Timbalada and Eva Yerbabuena. It was released to critical acclaim in New York in the autumn of 2002, and went on to win two major awards at the International Festival of La Géode in Paris. In September 2002, STOMP finally entered London’s West End at the Vaudeville Theatre, and later that year STOMP performed as part of The Royal Variety Show for the second time. 2003 saw a new STOMP production open at the Stuart Street Theatre in Boston, and a unique Dolby Digital trailer featuring STOMP performances debuted in cinemas across the globe. In 2004, New York celebrated 10 years of continuous performances of STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre by renaming 2nd Avenue at 8th Street, Stomp Avenue. In addition to the European tour, in 2005 STOMP returned to Tokyo for three weeks and also toured to Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, STOMP’s New York production passed its 5,000th performance mark. In the same year, Luke and Steve directed a public service announcement for television called “Stomp Out Litter,” which featured the cast "sweeping up" at iconic locations in the five boroughs. In addition, they were commissioned to create and produce The Lost and Found Orchestra, which takes the ideas behind STOMP to a symphonic level, in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival. The LFO subsequently performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007 and was seen at the Royal Festival Hall in London at Christmas 2008 and at the Theater Carré in
February 2009. In 2007, STOMP OUT LOUD opened in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino with an expanded cast and performed inside a new $28 million theater, specifically created for the production. The West End entered its sixth consecutive year with a move from the Vaudeville to the Ambassadors Theatre, where it still resides. In 2008, STOMP returned to its roots for a new DVD shoot at the Brighton Dome, bringing together a cast from all over the STOMP world. For the first time, the entire show has been captured in high definition sound and video. 2008 also saw Steve and Luke expand into new areas with the release of their IMAX 3D nature documentary Wild Ocean, with a symphonic mix of percussion and traditional orchestra in the soundtrack. In September of the same year, Wild Ocean won two awards at the Giant Screen Cinema Association for Best Sound and Best Original Score at their annual conference held in New York. The Lost and Found Orchestra reunited in 2010 for a new show, PANDEMONIUM, which appeared in several U.S. cities throughout the autumn. In 2011, the New York production of STOMP entered its 18th year, trouncing the Orpheum house record set by Little Shop of Horrors. It also entered its 10th year in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre, while at the same time Steve and Luke continued with their 3D film work. 2012 saw the release of The Last Reef 3D, a film about the beauty and the plight of reefs worldwide. As with Wild Ocean, Luke and Steve composed the film’s orchestral soundtrack, recording it at The Old Market Theatre in their hometown of Brighton & Hove in the U.K. The Old Market Theatre was renovated in 2011, and Steve and Luke now run it as a full-time venue, bringing music, theater, dance, comedy and visual arts to the U.K.’s south coast. In August 2012, the largest ever assembly of STOMP performers (40 performers from 12 different countries) were brought together for a specifically choreographed appearance in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. STOMP was created with the original U.K. cast: Luke Cresswell, Nick Dwyer, Sarah Eddy, Theseus Gerard, Fraser Morrison, David Olrod, Carl Smith and Fiona Wilkes.

lton Brown Live: Eat Your Science (www. altonbrownlive.com), is the follow-up to the smash “Edible Inevitable” tour. Fans can expect all-new everything, including songs, multimedia presentations, talk-show antics and bigger and better potentially dangerous food demonstrations. Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. Critics and fans alike have raved about the interactive components of Brown’s shows. He plans the following: “Plenty of new therapy-inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want to give too much away, but this time we’re going to play a little game while we’re at it. Plus, you’ll see things I’ve never been allowed to do on TV.” He’s also contemplating more sophisticated protective gear for folks in the first few rows ... just in case things get messy ... again.
Brown, author of the James Beard award -winning, “I’m Just Here for the Food,” and the New York Times bestselling sequence, “Good Eats,” is releasing the first of two new cookbooks through Ballantine Books (an imprint of Random House) this fall. CIRQUE MECHANICS PEDAL PUNK
ABOUT THE SHOW
F
rom the inventive Cirque Mechanics comes Pedal Punk, a Steampunk-inspired acrobatic whirlwind where cycling is the escape from a technology-obsessed society. In Pedal Punk we experience the excitement, artistry and thrill that occurs when a zany bike shop mechanic interacts with cyclists and bikes and repairs more than broken pieces. He creates wondrous machines that come to life and inspires the cyclist in all of us to unite with our inner Pedal Punk. Creative Director Chris Lashua spent most of his career on a BMX bike and inside a German Wheel. This new production showcases his innate passion and fascination for all things bicycles and cycling. The synergy between man and machine, the hallmark of Cirque Mechanics, is magnificently exposed in Pedal Punk. It is that synergy that The New York Times called “exceptional, evocative, eye-catching and grossly entertaining … in a word, excellent.” • The Gantry Bike, the centerpiece of the show, is a pedal driven, roving mechanical marvel, a giant playground on wheels, elegant and versatile. • The Gantry Trampoline act, with master

trampolinists Wes Hatfield and Gareth Hopkins is a daring adrenaline rush. The acrobats bounce, climb and play, all while the Gantry spins and moves. Male contortionist, Windu, seems to disassemble his body à la urban break dancer. BMX rider, Blake Hicks, is a master of his machine. He displays flashy technical prowess as he pulls off big tricks and extreme stunts, testing his limits every time. Nata Ibragimov transforms playing with bike rims into a dynamic tango. She rolls and spins her hoops with rhythm and precision, across the stage and high up in the air. A Classic Penny Farthing turns into an impressive aerial duo act with Lauren Stark and Lindsey Covarrubias, when the bike is lifted by Gantry power, high above the stage. Jan Damm, is a skillful comedic juggler and clown. His hysterically funny audience participation piece, a very clever stationary bike race, will create heroes in the crowd. Nick and Wendy Harden perform a romantic unicycle dance that overwhelms the senses. Their balancing and pedaling tell a tale with dexterity, strength and passion.
CIRQUE MECHANICS PEDAL PUNK: CREATIVE TEAM CHRIS LASHUA (Creative Director/Founder) Company founder, Chris Lashua, hails from Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his youth riding on a BMX bike. He was discovered by Cirque du Soleil and created/ performed a BMX bike act that was entirely his own. He was then commissioned to build a “German Wheel” piece for the company, cementing his reputation as a visionary of circus gadgetry. His engineering chops and creative energy led him to "run away" with his own circus company, Cirque Mechanics. Chris believes that innovative mechanical apparatus and the relationship between performer and machine sets his company apart and is at the heart of what makes Cirque Mechanics unique. Chris has delivered on this unique relationship in Birdhouse Factory and Boom Town, the company’s two theatrical productions, and in Cirque Mechanics for the Orchestra, Chris explored the performer machine relationship with the Gantry Bike, a self- contained, pedal driven mechanical stage, worthy of the grand classical music featured in that show. Once again, Chris continues to build on the might of the Gantry Bike in Pedal Punkbby adding newly designed, inventive pedal driven devices that interact with the performers. In Pedal Punk, Chris masterfully merges his passion for cycling, circus and all things mechanical in an exceptionally playful and artful way.

His works have been installed from backyards to Broadway, and continue to tour internationally. He is a founding member of Cirque Mechanics and his company Gravity Design, through which he has developed an arsenal of specialized tools, pushing the bounds of performance as well as industrial safety. Bryan Schuette, and the boys at United Machine, for fabricating and creating and trusting me with their equipment. Our friends and family at Cirque du Soleil for continuing to set the bar higher. It is my life’s thrill to get to “build a circus with my friends and call it work.” The time spent creating this show was an invigorating, challenging and at times a frightening journey. The days were long, but encouraging, uplifting and exhausting. But most of all, they were a blast. I hope you get half as much enjoyment watching as we had in creating, thanks for coming! — Chris Lashua, creative director/founder

The Bridges of Madison County One of the most romantic stories ever told
T
he Bridges of Madison County is the unforgettable story of two people caught between decision and desire, as a chance encounter becomes a second chance at so much more. It’s the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, fourday whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid. The Bridges of Madison County first captured the nation’s attention over 20 years ago as a best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, then as a film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. You may be one of the over 50 million readers of the book or one of the many who loved the movie – or perhaps you are brand new to The Bridges of Madison County. Whatever your relationship, now is your chance to experience this love story live as the two-time Tony Award®winning Broadway musical sets out across the country.

Fun Facts About Newsies, Slated to Return in August Tickets on sale now! Choreography
The History
• Christopher Gattelli’s Tony awardwinning choreography steals the show each night with 31 backflips, and countless spins, leaps and tap steps.
• Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, which began when newspaper publishers raised the price for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.
Newspapers
From Big Screen to Broadway
• The 16 newspapers that are featured in the dance break are torn in advance to separate down the middle easily. • 42 sheets of paper are danced on or torn during the riot sequence each night. These single-use sheets are either recycled or given to audience members during the performance. • There are approximately 150 newspapers used at every performance, specifically printed with the headline “Trolley Strike Enters Third Week.” These papers are carefully cared for, to avoid tearing, so they can be used for multiple performances.
• The movie and musical are based on the book Children of the City by David Nasaw. • Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional and amateur productions, Newsies' Paper Mill Playhouse run engendered extraordinary interest from the media and public alike, sparkig the transfer to Broadway. • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances; however, due to popular demand, Newsies went on to run for 1,005 performances over 2.5 years. Awards
Newsies was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards. Newsies' Fansies
• Newsies has a large group of dedicated fans, called Fansies, whose enthusiasm helped push the show to Broadway. • When the Broadway engagement of Newsies was announced, chatter on Twitter reached 14 million people. • The official Newsies Facebook page reached 100,000 fans before the show opened on Broadway.
