BELOVED BROADWAY FAVORITE CATS RETURNS

C

ATS is back and making its triumphant return May 24-29 in Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Terrific for the entire family, CATS features 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless melodies, including the hit song, “Memory.” Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, Charlotte’s favorite feline show is an all-singing, alldancing musical spectacular that will get your toes tapping and your imagination going. An audience favorite, CATS is also no stranger to accolades; it won numerous awards, including both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award® for Best Musical. The London production ran for 21 years and the Broadway production ran for 18 years, making CATS the second longest-running show in Broadway history, and the fourth longest-running West End musical. It has been performed in over 20 countries and in about 250 cities, including such diverse destinations as Buenos Aires, Seoul, Helsinki and Singapore. Now that it was been seen by millions of audience members worldwide, it is time to celebrate with the whole family the magic, the mystery and the wonder of CATS. Don’t miss your chance to see the show that revolutionized musical theatre.

RAT PACK CHARM AND PAVAROTTI PASSION Recently, Deana Martin added best-selling author to her list of accomplishments. Her 2004 book Memories are Made of This: Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes reached #2 in the United States, #6 in Australia, and #10 in the United Kingdom. “That’s Amore” will also celebrate the incomparable voice of Luciano Pavarotti with a special tribute featuring tenor Frank Portone. For the evening, Portone, who serves as Principal Horn of the Charlotte Symphony, will lend his voice to the passionate operatic arias of Leoncavallo, Puccini, and Capua, made famous by Pavarotti. Portone welcomes the switch of instrument. “It is such a huge change of pace for me to leave the back of the orchestra, where the horns sit, and step to the front of the orchestra as a vocal soloist,” says Portone. “It took some getting used to when I first started singing with the Symphony. Now, after singing many concerts with the Charlotte Symphony and other orchestras, I’m a little more used to it. It will be exciting to step up and sing all these arias and songs for Charlotte audiences. I am really looking forward to singing on the “That’s Amore” Pops concerts!” So, let the moon hit your eye like a big pizza pie, and join the Charlotte Symphony for “That’s Amore!”

s a daughter of the Rat Pack, Deana Martin grew up surrounded by song. “Uncle Frank,” a man we all know and love as the iconic Frank Sinatra, gave the young Deana her first voice lesson. And her father, Dean Martin, and the rest of the Pack – Sammy Davis. Jr. and Peter Lawford – later gave their unwavering support and guidance as Deana pursued a career in show business. Now an internationally successful vocalist in her own right, Deana Martin makes her Charlotte Symphony debut on April 29-30 when the Symphony, conducted by Albert-George Schram, presents “That’s Amore” – a celebration of all things Italian. These days, Deana Martin is touring around the world, bringing her DEANA MARTIN own interpretation and flair to the songs made famous by her mentors. She is often praised for her remarkable ability to bring the emotional element of music to the forefront in ways few other performers can. FRANK PORTONE Her Top 10 CD release, Memories Are Made of This, led the charts for 40 weeks in 2006 and 2007. Her 2009 album Volare put Deanna at the top of the Billboard and iTunes charts yet again.

SPOTLIGHT wasn’t sheer dancing “disappeared into a harmonious wash of light, costumes, music and movement.” Legendary choreographer Martha Graham’s influence can be seen in Requiem, a piece by former Graham Company principal dancer Jacqulyn Buglisi. Set to Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem,” Buglisi uses five female dancers, costumed in long layered silk skirts by costumer A. Christina Giannini. According to Buglisi, who choreographed the ballet in 2001, the main themes of Requiem are man’s vulnerabilities and peace.
