r. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop.” These were some of King’s final words to the nation before he was assassinated. Now this speech is taking center stage Feb. 4-March 2, when the critically lauded The Mountaintop makes its Charlotte debut in Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Set on April 3, 1968, the 2010 Olivier Award winner for best new play is the gripping reimagining of the events that took place the night before the assassination of the Civil Rights leader. After delivering his magnificent and memorable “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, an exhausted and defeated King retires to Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel where an unexpected visit from a feisty young maid compels him to confront his own humanity and the fate of our nation while an epic storm rages outside. Hailed as “daring, rousing and provocative” by Entertainment Weekly, the play was written by Memphis native Katori Hall and is co-produced by Blumenthal Performing Arts. Blumenthal has had a long association with

this play since Blumenthal CEO Tom Gabbard saw the very first production of it in London. Blumenthal subsequently co-produced the Broadway run of The Mountaintop starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. The upcoming production is jointly produced by the Arizona Theater Company, Guthrie Theater, Penumbra Theatre and Blumenthal. Hall, the playwright, grew up in a workingclass household as the youngest of four daughters. Her mother was a phlebotomist, and her father worked in factories. For fun, Hall would spend hours by herself making up stories, and she recalls having about 15 imaginary friends. In 2003, she graduated from Columbia University with a degree in African-American studies and creative writing. From there, she went on to do theater training at Harvard and playwriting at Julliard. It was while studying at Columbia that she realized the lack of roles for African-American women. She was given an assignment to pull some scenes with two young AfricanAmerican women and couldn't find any. She knew then that she had to write. That epiphany is the thing of which she is most proud. Hall’s mother, Carrie Mae Golden, was the inspiration behind The Mountaintop. In 1968, Continued on Page 8

a young Golden begged her mother to take her to hear King speak at the Mason Temple, but her mother refused because of the fear of violence. That became one of Golden’s biggest regrets. Hall even named the female role in her play Camae, short for Carrie Mae, as a way to give her mother the chance she never had with King. “He had vulnerabilities and fears,” Hall said in an interview with The Washington Post. “This is a man that provided a fundamental shift in American society. King forced us to see people of color are not second-class citizens; they are equal. He did this extraordinary thing. But he wasn’t superhuman. He always

said, ‘I’m a sinner. Not a saint.’ That is the King you will see in Mountaintop. It was important to see the humanity in this hero so we can see the hero in ourselves.” Now critics and audiences are praising Hall as the hero as she became only the second black writer (following August Wilson) and fourth woman in 34 years to win the Olivier Award, Britain's equivalent to the Tony, for best new play. "I must say, I feel very satisfied," Hall said. "It doesn't matter if you're white, black, old or young. Everyone is coming to see The Mountaintop." — Article by Danny Knaub

The Dancer’s Take: A Season in Preview

A

s the president and artistic director for North Carolina Dance Theatre, JeanPierre Bonnefoux selects the company’s dancers and the ballets they perform. “When I’m creating a season, I work to find a balance between what I think our audience will find entertaining and inspiring, and what will challenge and enthuse our dancers,” said Bonnefoux. “In order to attract the best talent, we have to perform an exciting repertory.” The repertory Bonnefoux has planned for the remainder of the 2013-2014 Season is one the dancers are excited about. Here are comments from the dancers about upcoming performances:

colorful and classic Cinderella, choreographed by Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, is full of magic, humor and romance. Audiences of all ages enjoy the beloved fairy tale of a young girl who goes from being a lonely servant to a beautiful princess. With extravagant sets and costumes, as well as Prokofiev’s lush score, Cinderella includes a rich array of characters including silly stepsisters, a delightful princess, entertaining puppets and, of course, a handsome prince. Othello and Forgotten Land April 24-26, Knight Theater “I can’t wait to perform in Othello, said dancer Anna Gerberich. “I am a sucker for a tragic love story. Plus, as part of the night, we’re performing Jiri Kylian’s Forgotten Land. I love the challenge of performing such diverse choreography in one night.” A musical theater style production with original music by David Rozenblatt, Othello sizzles as it puts Shakespeare’s characters into a 21st century rock and roll lifestyle. This contemporary adaptation of Othello showcases the dancers’ athleticism and theatrical flair with seductive pas de deuxs and large scale, intricate dance pieces. N.C. Dance Theatre is also performing a ballet by Jiri Kylian for the first time. Kylian is recognized as one of the great masters of contemporary choreography.

Innovative Works Jan. 23-Feb. 15, 701 N. Tryon Theater The popular Innovative Works series challenges the dancers and audiences with new choreography of diverse styles. “Innovative Works tests my boundaries to grow and expand as an artist,” said dancer Josh Hall. The intimate 200-seat 701 N. Tryon Theater gives audiences an unparalleled viewing experience and access to the dancers and artists. New this season, N.C. Dance Theatre is partnering with local artists to collaborate on the creation of each ballet. Cinderella March 6-16, Knight Theater “The choreography for Cinderella is beautiful and timeless,” said dancer Christina LaForgia. “Plus, the music by Prokofiev is one of my favorite scores.” The

Il Trittico Offers 3 Times the Drama

Puccini’s trio of one-act operas premieres in Charlotte Jan. 18

S

erved in three deliciously passionate helpings, this triple scoop of Puccini is no mere trifle. In the Parisian romance, Il Tabarro, the oldest wounds run the deepest. The Seine gives no comfort for either. Family, fortune, innocence – all are lost in Suor Angelica. Still salvation proves to be Angelica’s birthright. And, the title character in Gianni Schicchi brilliantly defrauds the fraudulent – a crime or the ultimate act of love? On this delicious night, there will be three operas in one exciting evening: Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. Have the good taste to be there. Puccini’s triple bill is unlike anything else. Opera Carolina celebrates this lesser known masterpiece from the famous pen of the composer of Madama Butterfly with its Charlotte premiere in a stunning production opening Saturday, Jan. 18, with additional performances scheduled Jan. 23 and 26. “We’re offering, in one night, three great one-act operas from the pen of a true genius of music drama,” says Maestro James Meena. “The themes of each are as different as you can possibly get, but the thread that unites them is the brilliant composer who has

given us memorable operas like La Boheme, Tosca and Turandot. The qualities that we love in these well-known Puccini operas are all there in Il Trittico, plus one of the most famous of all opera arias.” Meena is referring to “O mio babbino caro,” (“Oh My Beloved Father”) from the third opera, the comedy Gianni Schicchi. Rising opera star Melinda Whittington will perform the famous aria, in which her character, Lauretta, tells her father that if he won’t let her marry the handsome Rinuccio, she’ll throw herself in the river. The versatile soprano, who has been a member of Opera Carolina’s resident company for four years, made her professional mainstage debut with the Charlotte company in The Magic Flute last winter. She is currently enrolled in the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Il Trittico will be performed in Italian with English supertitles. Wells Fargo Private Bank is Opera Carolina’s 20132014 season sponsor, and Time Warner Cable is the performance presenting sponsor for Il Trittico. The characters in Il Trittico may be (mostly) unlucky in love, but for Charlotte opera lovers, three will be a very lucky number.

B.B. King

hroughout the 1990s, as well as the ’80s, ’70s, ’60s and ’50s, there has been only one “King of the Blues” – Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since King started recording in the late 1940s, he has released more than 60 albums, many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live At The Regal,” and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together For The First Time.” King has had two No. 1 rhythm and blues hits: 1951’s “Three O’Clock Blues” and 1952’s “You Don’t Know Me.” He also has had four No. 2 R&B hits: 1953’s “Please Love Me,” 1954’s “You Upset Me B.B. King Baby,” 1960’s “Sweet Sixteen, Part I” and 1966’s “Don’t Answer the Door, Part I.” King’s most popular crossover hit, 1970’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” went to No. 15 pop. But King, as well as the entire blues genre, is not radio oriented. His classic songs, such as “Payin’ the Cost to Be the Boss,” “Caldonia,” “How Blue Can You Get,” “Every Day I Have the Blues” and “Why I Sing the Blues,” are concert and fan staples. Riley B. King was born on Sept. 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Miss., just outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola. He used to play on the corner of Church and Second streets for dimes and would sometimes play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night. With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tenn., in 1947 to pursue his musical career. Memphis was where every important musician of the South gravitated, and it supported a large, competitive musical community where virtually every black musical style was heard. King stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most renowned rural

blues performers of his time, who schooled King further in the art of the blues. King’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady performance engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a 10-minute spot on black staffed and managed radio station WDIA. “King’s Spot,” sponsored by Pepticon, a health tonic, became so popular that it was increased in length and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Soon, King needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. Incidentally, King’s middle initial “B” is just that, it is not an abbreviation. In the mid-1950’s, while King was performing at a dance in Twist, Ark., a few fans became unruly and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. Once he was safely outside, King realized he left his $30 guitar inside, so he rushed back to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar. since then, each of King’s guitars have been called Lucille. Soon after his number one hit, “Three O’Clock Blues,” King began touring nationally, and he has never stopped, performing an average of 125 concerts a year. In 1956, King and his band played an astonishing 342 one-night shows. From the chitlin circuit with its small town cafes, ghetto theaters, country dance halls, and roadside joints to jazz clubs, rock palaces, symphony concert halls, college concerts, resort hotels and prestigious concert halls nationally and internationally, King

15A

B.B. King has become the most renowned blues musician of the past 60 years. In the army, King was introduced to the music of such guitarists as Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker. “I heard an electric guitar that wasn’t playing spiritual,” recalls King. “It was T-Bone Walker doing 'Stormy Monday,' and that was the prettiest sound I think I ever heard in my life. That’s what really started me to play the blues.” Over the years, King has developed one of the world’s most readily identified guitar styles. He borrowed from Walker, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and others, integrating his precise vocal like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist’s vocabulary. His every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, including Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Jeff Beck. King has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound. His singing is richly melodic, both vocally and in the “singing” that comes from his guitar. In King’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille. In 1969, King told Time magazine: “I’m me, Blues is what I do best. If Frank Sinatra can be the best in his field, Nat King Cole in his, Bach and Beethoven in theirs, why can’t I be great, and known for it, in blues?” In 1967, King performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, a portion of which was later aired over PBS TV. In 1968, he played at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West on bills with the hottest contemporary rock artists of the day who idolized King and helped cross him over to a young white audience. King has influenced Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, Johnny Winter, Albert King and others. In 1969, King was chosen by the Rolling

Stones to open 18 American concerts for them; Ike and Tina Turner also played on 18 shows. King also made the first of his numerous appearances on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.” In 1970, King premiered in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace and at the Royal Box in the American Hotel in New York City as well as on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” In the early 1970s, King toured Ghana, Lagos, Chad and Liberia under the auspices of the United States State Department, in addition to playing the major jazz festivals around the world. In 1989, King toured Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, West Germany, Holland and Ireland for three months as a special guest of U2. King is featured in “When Love Comes to Town” on U2’s album “Rattle and Hum.” Starting in 1992, King has headlined the Blues Music Festival of American amphitheaters with three support acts. On Feb. 23, 1990, PBS started televising “All Day & All Night: Memories From Beale Street Musicians,” which featured King and captured the lifestyles of musicians who performed on Beale Street in Memphis, Tenn., from the 1920s to the 1950s, when being on Beale Street was like “living in paradise.” King recalled on the half-hour special that Beale Street was “a place to learn, to make friends. It was a little world all of your own. There were always musicians who were willing to help you if you wanted to learn.” And King and Rufus Thomas recalled Amateur Night at the Palace Theatre where “anyone who could carry a tune got a dollar for going on stage.” In 1990, King and Ray Charles coheadlined the Philip Morris Superband five continent world tour. The final concert was recorded and “Live at the Apollo” became King’s first big band album. In 1991, he headlined the Philip Morris Superband International Tour again, which featured Diane Reeves. And in 1991, King participated in the all-star Guitar Legends concert in Seville, Spain, where practically every guitar hero performed.

15B

B.B. King In 1990 King received the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1991 the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award from Gibson Guitar Co. In 1989, King’s imprint was added to the Amsterdam, Holland, Walk of Fame, and in 1991, it was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, between Milton Berle and Vivian Leigh. In 1973, King received the B’nai Brith Humanitarian Award from the Music and Performance Lodge of New York. In 1990, he received the prestigious Presidential Medal of the Arts in Washington, D.C., with President Bush presiding. In 1991, King received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts, and in 1995, the Kennedy Center Honors. Over the years, King has been bestowed 15 Grammy recognitions by his peers; among them: • 1970 – Best rhythm and blues vocal performance by a male for “The Thrill Is Gone.” • 1981 – Best ethnic or traditional recording for “There Must Be a Better World Somewhere.” • 1983 – Best traditional blues recording for “Blues ‘N Jazz.” • 1985 – Best traditional blues recording for “My Guitar Sings the Blues” from “Six Silver Strings.” • 1970 – Best album cover, an art director’s award, for King’s “Indianola Mississippi Seeds.” • 1989 – Nomination for best contemporary blues recording for “King of the Blues 1989.” • 1989 – Nomination for best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal for “When Love Comes to Town” with U2 from U2’s “Rattle And Hum.” • 1990 – Best traditional blues recording for the album “Live at San Quentin.” • 1991 – Best traditional blues recording for “Live at the Apollo.” • 1993 – Best traditional blues recording for “Blues Summit.” • 1996 – Best rock instrumental performance – along with Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughn, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Dr. John and Art Neville – for “SRV Shuffle” from “A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

King was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, where Sting of the Police made the induction speech. King was the recipient of the 1986 National Association for Campus Activities Hall of Fame Award. He was Blues Act of the Year in 1985, 1987 and 1988 Performance Award Polls. He is a founding member of the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center. King received the Grammy “Lifetime Achievement Award” in December 1987. He won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Blues Foundation in 1997. King has received four honorary doctorates. In November 1997, MCA released King’s album “Deuces Wild” with King in tandem with 13 legendary artists, including Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Joe Cocker, Tracy Chapman, Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, Dr. John, Marty Stewart, D’Angelo, David Gilmore, Paul Carrick and Heavy D. “Deuces Wild” became King’s second gold album. In 1999, King released “Let the Good Times Roll,” his tribute to Louis Jordan. “Louis Jordan was a great musician,” says King, “and in my opinion, was way ahead of his time. As people get to know him, they will realize what a great contribution he left to the music of today.” For more information, visit www.bbking. com. The Heart of Motown

L

iterally a combination of motor and town, Motown is also a nickname for Detroit, the city where the soulful pop music got its start in 1959 under the Detroitbased Motown record company. Home to beloved artists such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Four Tops, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5, the music of Motown became a national treasure during the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Moving into the ’90s, successful recording artists such as Boyz II Men were part of the Motown label. With songs like “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “My Girl,” “Stand By Me,” “Under the Board Walk,” and countless other universal hits, Motown is lauded for its cultural crossover success that brought, and continues to bring, Americans from diverse backgrounds together around a shared love for the music. Recapture the heart of Motown when you experience these hits and more performed live at Belk Theater on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, by the award-winning musical group Spectrum. Twice voted best of Las Vegas and a 2009 recipient of the Vegas Entertainment Consumer’s Living Legends Award for Excellence in Entertainment, Spectrum is a first-class quartet throughout the U.S. and around the globe. The group boasts four incredible singers who combine harmonious vocals with deft choreography to credibly cover the music of groups from the Temptations to Boyz II Men. Finally, not uncommon to the trademark sounds of Motown, Spectrum will call on the orchestral string and horn sections of the Charlotte Symphony to back up their melodies. Conductor Albert-George Schram will take the podium. Novant Health is the generous sponsor of this performance.
