Opera Is Real Life … Set to Music 2016/17 season honors Italian opera and showcases timeless tales

T

Next up in January is La Traviata (Jan. 22, 26 and 28), that timeless story of a love forbidden because of class differences. Think of it as the precursor to Richard Gere’s modern-day nobleman rescuing Julia Roberts’ Vivian in Pretty Woman ... without the phony Hollywood ending. April brings an operatic take on a Western (April 23, 27 and 29). In La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the West), Puccini demonstrates that an Italian art form dating back to the late 1500s can be an effective medium for telling the quintessential American story. In this case, a poker player falls for a gun-totin’, saloonownin’ lady in a tumbleweed town during the California Gold Rush. And, Opera Carolina’s Street Opera Initiative will continue to pop up in unexpected places next season. You might be in a small theater, church or a coffee shop when a diva suddenly breaks into song. This season – made possible by Wells Fargo Private Bank’s sponsorship – is designed to show the community that opera is rooted in real life, but set to soaring music.

o the uninitiated, opera may seem like little more than one death scene after another. No other art form revels as much in a dramatic demise. But at its heart, opera is real life with a glorious soundtrack. And Opera Carolina’s upcoming season demonstrates that. “If you’ve ever enjoyed slapstick, cartoons, a love story or spaghetti Westerns, you’ll find omething to love during our 2016/17 season,” said Maestro James Meena. “Opera is based on ageless stories,” said Meena, Opera Carolina’s general director and principal conductor. “Sometimes, those stories are literally true, as in the case of French courtesan Marie Duplessis, the inspiration behind Verdi’s La Traviata.” The main season opens in October (Oct. 22, 27 and 30) with Rossini’s madcap The Barber of Seville, a work so embedded in popular culture that its main musical theme and big numbers have been sampled by Bugs Bunny. A busybody barber is intent on helping one man land the woman of his dreams, but multiple suitors are vying for her, which leads to comic complications.

Ballet Is in Bloom at Spring Works

“I

mprovisational, electric, high energy” – that’s how choreographer Dwight Rhoden describes the new ballet he is creating for Charlotte Ballet’s Spring Works. Rhoden, Charlotte Ballet’s resident choreographer, is also the director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet in NYC. Since 2006, Rhoden has traveled to Charlotte several times a year to create new works for the company. “Charlotte Ballet is strong and versatile,” said Rhoden. “I am always looking for new ways to challenge the dancers and the audience. “ For his new ballet at Spring Works, Rhoden is working with the local Jazz Arts Initiative, which will have musicians playing live during his piece. “I love the concept of creating a ballet that mimics the way a jazz ensemble would play in a club, with different sets of music that represent a progression of jazz through the years,” said Rhoden. “And because jazz is free-form, the dancers have the opportunity to be spontaneous and inspired by the live music.” Spring Works, a triple bill, also features choreographer Sasha Janes’ We Danced Through Life, set to Dvořák. Janes, called “king of the pas de deux,” choreographed his ballet as a joyous remembrance of life and love. Legendary ballerina and Charlotte Ballet Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride is restaging George Balanchine’s Who Cares? Charlotte Ballet last performed the ballet at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014, when McBride was an honoree. Who Cares? is set to some of Gershwin’s most popular melodies, such as “The Man I Love” and “I Got Rhythm.” Photo by Jeff C avotta

Q&A With Dixie Longate Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top Comes to Booth Playhouse This Summer

D

ixie Longate, of Dixie’s Tupperware Party fame, returns to Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center July 5-24 for a brand new show: Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull and 16 Other Things I Learned While I Was Drinking Last Thursday. Here's what she had to say about bringing her new show to Charlotte.

about plastic all over again. I got a crap ton more to say. Q: We notice there’s mention of a mechanical bull in the title of the new show … will you actually be riding one? Dixie: You will be joining me in my friend’s honky tonk this time around, so of course everything that you expect to see while you are out for a healthy night of drinking, you will see when you join me. What kind of honky tonk worth its salt wouldn’t have a bar ... and a mechanical bull. You’ll be able to smell the whiskey and bad decision-making right when you walk past the saloon doors.

Q: Charlotte LOVES you and your tupperware party! Can you tell us what we can expect in your new show? Dixie: You know that I am happier than a stripper pole in the Magic Mike movie to be coming back to Charlotte. I had so much fun when I was there last summer that when y’all called ... I actually put down my drink to answer the phone. Being raised in the Deep South, I realized that some of my upbringing is a wee bit different from many of the people that I meet, so I figu ed it was time to share some of the rowdiness of my hometown and some homespun wisdom from my Momma. This new story is all about dusting off the obwebs and living better than you do.

Q: Can you describe Never Wear a Tube Top in just three words? Dixie: Probably not. I mean “Wisdom through booze” would probably be the best way to say it, but I am not known as a lady of few words. I tend to always have my mouth moving, but that is what gets me so many dates. But I think that is the basis of my story. It’s my outlook on life as told through the bottom of a Jack bottle. You’ll leave the show knowing a little bit more about yourself and wanting to go on one hell of an adventure in life.

Q: Are you still selling Tupperware? Will it be available to purchase at the upcoming show? Dixie: Well, I am the Tupperware lady, so there are always a few plastic bowls within a few feet of me it seems. This new show really ain’t even about Tupperware, but that don’t mean that I won’t help you out with your food storage needs. I’m a giver, after all. But I don’t want you to think for one second that I am just going to be chatting

Written in a mixture of Latin, “middle-high” German and medieval French, the work is broken down into three musical sections: “Springtime,” “In the Tavern” and “The Court of Love.” Listen for countertenor Lawrence Zazzo’s solo as he is tasked with portraying a “dying swan” being roasted on a spit in the tavern. Soloists Klara Ek, soprano, and Javier Arrey, baritone, also are featured throughout this timeless dramatic work.

Written in 1937, Carl Orff's composition is still one of the most popular pieces of the classical music repertoire. WHO’S WHO in the CAST of the Opera. Special thanks to the entire creative team, CGF, and my family. @deraney DOUGLAS McGRATH (Book) is a filmmaker and playwright. His play Checkers opened the 30th anniversary season at New York’s Vineyard Theatre. He collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway, for which they were nominated for an Academy Award. His first film as writer/director was his adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. He has also written and directed Nicholas Nickleby, which won the Best Ensemble Cast from the National Board of Review; Company Man; Infamous; and His Way. His essays have appeared in the New Yorker, The New Republic, Vanity Fair and The New York Times. GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music). Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” (The Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top-40 hits including “The Locomotion,” “Natural Woman” and “Up on the Roof.” In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music. CAROLE KING (Words and Music). Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys. BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history. In addition to “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the last century, and the songs heard in Beautiful, he composed later standards like “Somewhere Out There” (winner of two Grammys), “Here You Come Again,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” “Just Once” and “Don’t Know Much.” Together, he and Cynthia Weil have amassed an incredible 112 pop, country and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Inc. for significant radio air play. He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. CYNTHIA WEIL (Words and Music) is known as the lyricist of classic songs such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song

of the 20th century. In addition to the songs heard in Beautiful, she set the words to later standards including “Somewhere Out There,” “Here You Come Again,” “He’s So Shy,” “Just Once” and “Don’t Know Much,” to name just a few. Weil has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honored with multiple Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards for “Somewhere Out There” as the Motion Picture Song of the Year and Song of the Year. The Bridges of Madison County One of the most romantic stories ever told

T

he Bridges of Madison County is the unforgettable story of two people caught between decision and desire, as a chance encounter becomes a second chance at so much more. It’s the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, fourday whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid. The Bridges of Madison County fi st captured the nation’s attention over 20 years ago as a best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, then as a film tarring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. You may be one of the over 50 million readers of the book or one of the many who loved the movie – or perhaps you are brand new to The Bridges of Madison County. Whatever your relationship, now is your chance to experience this love story live as the two-time Tony Award®winning Broadway musical sets out across the country.

Fun Facts About Newsies, Slated to Return in August Tickets on sale now! Choreography

The History

• Christopher Gattelli’s Tony awardwinning choreography steals the show each night with 31 backfli s, and countless spins, leaps and tap steps.

• Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, which began when newspaper publishers raised the price for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.

Newspapers

From Big Screen to Broadway

• The 16 newspapers that are featured in the dance break are torn in advance to separate down the middle easily. • 42 sheets of paper are danced on or torn during the riot sequence each night. These single-use sheets are either recycled or given to audience members during the performance. • There are approximately 150 newspapers used at every performance, specifi ally printed with the headline “Trolley Strike Enters Third Week.” These papers are carefully cared for, to avoid tearing, so they can be used for multiple performances.

• The movie and musical are based on the book Children of the City by David Nasaw. • Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional and amateur productions, Newsies' Paper Mill Playhouse run engendered extraordinary interest from the media and public alike, sparkig the transfer to Broadway. • The Broadway production was originally scheduled for a limited 12-week run of 105 performances; however, due to popular demand, Newsies went on to run for 1,005 performances over 2.5 years. Awards

Newsies was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards. Newsies' Fansies

• Newsies has a large group of dedicated fans, called Fansies, whose enthusiasm helped push the show to Broadway. • When the Broadway engagement of Newsies was announced, chatter on Twitter reached 14 million people. • The officia Newsies Facebook page reached 100,000 fans before the show opened on Broadway.
