Duke Energy Series Offers Epic, Fantastic Family-Friendly Shows
T
he shows coming next season on the Duke Energy Broadway Light Series all promise to be terrific date nights for busy couples or a great night out with good friends. But many are also ideal for the whole family, including the kids.
WICKED is the inventive story of what happened before Dorothy dropped into the Land of Oz and is one of the most popular shows ever to run on Broadway, especially among women and girls, who love the story of female friendship that’s the heart of this lively, moving and spectacular show that has won 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards.
Here’s the great thing! Season ticket buyers can add extra seats for any of the shows on next season or our Broadway Extras NOW. Opera Carolina Ignites its Educational Programming
S
chool students across Mecklenburg County will enjoy up-close encounters with opera when Opera Carolina’s educational touring company, Opera Express, hits the road again this spring, entertaining and enlightening young audiences in more than 30 CharlotteMecklenburg elementary schools, as well as a dozen counties throughout the Carolinas. The engaging cast of locally based opera singers performs the children’s opera, Pinocchio, a modern adaptation of the famous children’s tale set to famous operatic scenes. Online teaching tools and excerpts from the opera are available for teachers and students alike to gain greater insight into the opera art form. Opera Express is designed for K-5 age groups, with study guide activities that address North Carolina Standard Course of Study Standards in English Language Arts and North Carolina Essential Standards in Music and Social Studies. Opera Express has been preserved in recent years by the collective vision of Opera Carolina’s Board of Directors, businesses and individual donors who understand the value and future benefits of early arts education. Responding to the vision, Opera Carolina has created a singular educational funding effort called the Spark Campaign. The campaign seeks to attract both new and sustaining private
support to protect its 40-year history of education programming in CMS, and to secure ongoing funding for Opera Express’s long-term viability. Opera Carolina raised a total of $40,500 from generous individuals and corporate sponsors American Tire Distributors, Deloitte, Husqvarna, K & L Gates, Kilpatrick Stockton, King & Spalding, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., TOA Technologies and Womble Carlyle. These funds supplement a $10,000 grant from the Arts & Science Council. “Opera Carolina is profoundly grateful to these sponsors who have stepped forward to demonstrate such a far-reaching and enduring commitment to arts and education,” said General Director James Meena. “Funding programs like Opera Express allows students from CMS’ diverse neighborhoods to experience live opera in their own schools. Eighty percent of Opera Express performances this spring will be in CMS Focus Schools.” Since 1971, Opera Express has served more than one million children with such favorites as The Billy Goats Gruff, An Aesop Odyssey, Pinocchio, How Nanita Learned to Make Flan, and more. Opera Carolina’s other education programs include The Opera Carolina Academy, Student Night at the Opera, and Master Classes for regional university students.

HOWARD ASHMAN (Lyrics). conceived, wrote and directed Little Shop of Horrors, based on Roger Corman’s 1960-era horror flick and with music by Alan Menken. Little Shop played for five years off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theater. The show continues to be produced to great acclaim in the US as well as internationally. In 2003, Little Shop was revived on Broadway and in 2007 it was revived on the West End. It is currently one of the most produced shows in American High Schools. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical, Smile, music by Marvin Hamlisch. Little appreciated at the time, Smile is now considered a lost gem of musical theater and is performed by high school students around the US. Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken. Ashman’s contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by the dedication to the film Beauty and the Beast: “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed.” Ashman’s numerous awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, a Drama Desk and a London Evening Standard. He died in 1991 at age 40 from complications arising from AIDS. Ashman Sings Ashman, a CD of his work, with never-beforeheard demos, including those from Smile, is available from PS Classics. TIM RICE (Lyrics) (Sir Tim to you) has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises for over forty years, something he only intended to do for a few months while
waiting to become a pop star. The waiting has been extended, mainly because of the world’s failure to accept him as a rock god, but also because of the distracting success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Aladdin, King David and Beauty and the Beast with Alan Menken, Chess with Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and The Lion King and Aida with Elton John. He is well known in England, his home country, for his love of cricket and as a tolerable radio and television personality. He has won numerous awards along the way, including Oscars, Tonys and life-saving badges, but often for the wrong thing and often for simply turning up. He is currently working on a musical play about Machiavelli, and is plugging the recently released DVD and album of Chess in Concert starring Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. While working as a development executive at CBS, Linda Woolverton wrote two young adult novels: Star Wind and Running Before the Wind. After her books were published by Houghton Mifflin, she abandoned development and began to write full time. She started by writing scripts for animated television shows. When one of her novels caught the attention of a Disney executive, she was hired to write the script for the animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. Upon its release in 1991, the film won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. Woolverton was then hired to write the screenplay for The Lion King (shared credit). She then rewrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (shared credit) as well as writing for the animated feature Mulan. She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Woolverton was also awarded the Laurence Oliver Award for Beauty and the Beast for Best New Musical in the U.K. Beauty and the Beast ran between

Linda Woolverton’s script for Alice In Wonderland directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, was released in March of 2010. The film grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide and is the fifth highest grossing film of all time. Woolverton is the only woman ever to have a sole credit on a billion dollar film. She’s currently writing Maleficent for Disney as well as adapting the Alice screenplay for a Broadway musical. ROB ROTH (Director) received a Tony Award nomination as Best Director for his Broadway debut Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The show has played to sold out houses around the world in over 30 productions, winning many awards including the Olivier Award for Best Musical in London. Beauty is the 7th longest running show in Broadway history. Rob developed and directed the inaugural production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA, which debuted at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Rob co-wrote the book and directed The Opposite of Sex, which opened at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Rob developed and directed the Broadway musical Lestat, based on Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles” with a score by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and book by Linda Woolverton. Music of Billy Joel September 14 & 15, 2012 The 2012-2013 Pops season begins with The Music of Billy Joel. The program includes hits, “Just the Way you Are,” “Uptown Girl,” and “She’s Got A Way” plus musical selections from other piano men Elton John and Jerry Lee Lewis. Grammy and Tony-award nominee Michael Cavanaugh, hand-picked by Billy Joel to star in Broadway’s “Movin’ Out,” will present this evening in a tribute to the original piano man.

orth Carolina Dance Theatre’s 2012-2013 performance season has audiences experiencing an inspiring mix of new, contemporary ballets as well as classical favorites. Highlights of the season include Limitless this October, which features premieres by choreographers Sasha Janes and Dwight Rhoden, both known for their captivating choreography and challenging the dancers with complex moves. Rhoden, a former dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, has been featured on the hit Fox contest show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Next February, the annual Innovative Works series will give audiences an up close view of the dancers’ athleticism and passion exhibited in four new works. Jiri Bubenicek, who last worked with Dance Theatre in 2010, is traveling from Germany to create a new ballet for the Contemporary Fusion performance in April. Jiri’s ballet is joined by The Golden Section, a crowd
favorite by dance icon Twyla Tharp, and Rhapsodic Dances, Sasha Janes’ ballet that has been selected to be performed at the Kennedy Center in June 2013. Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux’s highly praised Peter Pan will excite audiences in March. Peter Pan tells the story of the mischievous boy who never wants to grow up, his sassy sidekick Tinker Bell and the frightful Captain Hook. Due to popular demand, Nutcracker, Charlotte’s favorite holiday tradition, expands to three weekends this December. Together, Nutcracker and Peter Pan form Dance Theatre’s Matinee Magic subscription, tailored especially for families and offering exclusive receptions with the performers after each show.
