The Band’s Visit Wins Best Musical

Tour heads to Charlotte next year as part of Blumenthal’s 2018-19 PNC Broadway Lights season By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

C

ongratulations to 2018 Tony® Award Best Musical winner The Band’s Visit! This critically acclaimed show heads to Knight Theater Aug. 6-25, 2019, as part of Blumenthal Performing Arts’ 2018-19 PNC Broadway Lights Season. The Queen City will be the fourth stop on this show’s national tour, continuing Blumenthal’s impressive track record of bringing Tony Award Best Musical winners to Charlotte before most cities across the country. That honor includes 2016 Best Musical winner Hamilton – headed to Belk Theater Oct. 10Nov. 4, 2018 as part of the 2017-2018 PNC Broadway Lights Season – and 2017 Best Musical winner Dear Evan Hansen, headed to Belk Theater March 19-24, 2019, as part of next season.

The Band’s Visit celebrates the deeply human ways music, longing and laughter can connect us all. After a mix-up at the border, an Egyptian Police Band is sent to a remote village in the middle of the Israeli desert. With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. “Charlotte theater fans are among the best in the country. Their exceptional support and enthusiasm have made us a top destination for the very best touring Broadway productions,” said Blumenthal President/CEO Tom Gabbard. “The season ahead continues the tradition of being able to see the best of Broadway close to home.”

Opera Carolina

operacarolina.org

There Seems to be a Revolution Happening Opera Carolina’s season honors women’s voices shaping politics and creating social change

“T

here are dozens of examples of strong, fierce women in opera,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor at Opera Carolina. “More often than not, however, female characters in opera are victims or a love interests, rather than women who take control of their lives. This season, we're celebrating powerful women – those who are smart, noble and who live unapologetically” The 70th Season (and its Heroines) • The Grand Opera season opens in November with Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment. Marie (played by Sarah Coburn) is a spirited young woman who was orphaned as an infant and improbably raised by a French army regiment. Unaware of her aristocratic lineage, she falls for a handsome peasant and is forced to decide between love and social status. Nov. 10, 15, and 18.

• Second in the series is the tragicomic Carmen, an opera in four acts by Georges Bizet. Carmen (Alyson Cambridge) drinks, smokes and gets what she wants. But her gypsy spirit will ultimately prove her undoing. When she chooses bullfighter Escamillo over Don Jose, she meets her demise. Yet she’s not tragic. She would rather live fully than play it safe. Even in death, Carmen is a feminist heroine. Jan. 19, 20, and 24. • Closing out the Grand Opera season is Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Beautiful, educated Tatyana (Melinda Whittington) is rejected when she declares her love for Eugene (Alexy Lavrov), a rich playboy. Soon after, he kills his best friend in a duel. Years later, Eugene returns from selfimposed exile to discover Tatyana married to a prince. He realizes – too late – his love for her. May 9, 11 and 12.

What’s So Funny About This Fall? Find out with The Queen City Comedy Experience By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

N

eed a good laugh? You’ll find plenty of opportunities when The Queen City Comedy Experience lands uptown at Spirit Square, Sept. 27-29. Co-produced by Queen City Comedy, The Comedy Zone and Blumenthal Performing Arts, this one-of-akind event will highlight several dozen local and national acts from a wide variety of comedy genres. Headliners include “Saturday Night Live” alum Jay Pharoah and YouTube sensation Randy Rainbow, known for his spliced celebrity interviews and politically-inspired musical parodies. “If it’s comedy, we’ll have it there,” says event co-creator Cale Evans, a frequent local improv performer with groups like Now Are the Foxes and Charlotte Comedy Theater. Twenty-four distinct shows spanning improv, sketch, stand up and more are planned during the three-day celebration of comedy. “It’s going to have a little something for everybody,” says Evans. For those who want a show they can bring the kids or Grandma to, a special Family Friendly Funny Festival schedule will be available with events that are appropriate for all ages. Much of The Queen City Comedy Experience’s focus will be on local acts, like the popular sketch comedy group Robot Johnson and the long-running Improv Charlotte, who donates its regular show proceeds to charity. Another highlight will be a reunion of one of Charlotte’s favorite

sketch comedy teams, The Perch. Spirit Square will be buzzing with comedy acts, free happy hour stand-up shows, buskers, magicians, musical groups, comedic films, a live-taping of The Comedy Zone podcast, plus chances for budding performers of all ages to get some hands-on comedy experience. Two art galleries within Spirit Square will be transformed into mini clubs for additional performance spaces to accommodate the large variety of offerings. Fans can purchase $49.98 Festival Passes that include seats for Jay Pharoah and Randy Rainbow at McGlohon Theater, plus general admission access to all the gallery and Duke Energy Theater shows. Keep checking online for details on single tickets and additional acts to come.

Phantom opens on Broadway.

The idea of a sequel is born after a conversation between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Phantom designer Maria Björnson where the two pitch that The Phantom could reside above New York City in Manhattan’s first penthouse.

19 91

A documentary about the Coney Island Fairground captivates Lloyd Webber, becoming the setting for his new musical.

19 92

Lloyd Webber partners with Frederick Forsyth to write the story, though it does not develop into a stage show. Forsyth later incorporates some of these ideas into his novella The Phantom of Manhattan.

2007

After a lapse in production, the project begins again when Ben Elton is brought on board to help develop a story. His suggestion to continue The Phantom’s story with many of the original characters is a hit.

2008

Lloyd Webber announces that the sequel will be titled Phantom: Once Upon Another Time. He later changes it to Love Never Dies.

2010

Rehearsals begin for Love Never Dies with past West End Phantom Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess, the original Christine in Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular, in the leading roles.

2011

With new direction, redesigned sets, costumes and choreography, a revamped version of the show is a hit in Australia with subsequent openings in Tokyo, Japan and Hamburg, Germany.

Casting is announced for the North American tour, which officially launched in October.

In honor of this anniversary, your Charlotte Symphony kicks off its exciting 2018-19 season at Belk Theater in September with an Opening Night performance of Brahms’s Violin Concerto featuring superstar Joshua Bell, plus a world premiere of a newly commissioned work composed by Nkieru Okoye, in honor of Charlotte today and tomorrow. The royal festivities continue in October with Handel Water Music, a collection of coronation anthems and other works Maestro Christopher Warren-Green himself has led at past royal weddings. The final in a trio of anniversary performances, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty in February 2019 features “Trail of Tears,” a composition by Michael Daugherty

Charlotte Symphony’s 2018-19 season

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
