The Ultimate Holiday Party
his year Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker has been made even more magical, with a million-dollar makeover of all new sets and costumes, made possible by a generous gift from the McColl family in honor of Jane Spratt McColl. To celebrate the new Nutcracker, presented by Bank of America, Charlotte Ballet is hosting a special opening night event, Night at the Nutcracker, on Dec. 2. The ultimate holiday party, Night at the Nutcracker features excerpts from Act I, including the enchanting party scene. With holiday party season upon us, Charlotte Ballet’s event planner, Emily Portal, has tips on how you can create your own ultimate holiday party. 1. Create Lasting Memories This time of year is about making memories, and 2016 is all about photo memories. A do-it-yourself photo booth for your holiday party is a fun way for your guests to leave with a memento from the evening. Nutcracker’s Snow Queen and King are ready for their photo op at the Night at the Nutcracker TapSnap photo booth. 2. Mix Up Your Menu Don’t be afraid to take a risk with your menu. A variety of small bites and a signature cocktail, like a salted caramel
eggnog, is a sure way to excite your guests. Need an idea? Night at the Nutcracker guests will enjoy caramel apple cookies with burnt bourbon ice cream sandwiches during the Land of Sweets reception. 3. Incorporate Variety One of the challenges of planning your own holiday party is providing entertainment for the entire group. Rave party reviews are dependent on a fun time had by all. A variety of activities ensure just that! At Night at the Nutcracker, adults will enjoy live entertainment and a gift-perfect silent auction, while children will enjoy their own activities in the Snowflake Village. 4. Give Back ’Tis the season to give back. Involve your favorite charitable organization at your holiday gathering by accepting donations or collecting items that are in critical need. Night at the Nutcracker event proceeds benefit scholarship opportunities for aspiring young Charlotte dancers. Experience the ultimate holiday party when you attend Night at the Nutcracker. Capacity is limited; reserve your tickets today! With its all new sets and costumes, don’t forget to secure your tickets to see the full Nutcracker production, Dec. 3-23 at Belk Theater.

harlotte native Abby Corrigan is returning to the stage at Blumenthal Performing Arts next summer. She performed at Belk Theater in 2014 with fellow nominees for best actor, best actress and the Wells Fargo Best Musical award in the Blumenthal Performing Arts’ High School Musical Theater Awards ceremony, also known as The Blumey Awards. This Abby Corrigan as Alison in Fun Home. time around, Corrigan will perform in Knight Theater, starring as the college-aged Alison in the first national tour of Fun Home, the Broadway musical that won multiple Tony Awards in 2015.
At the 2014 Blumey Awards, Corrigan took home the Best Actress award for her role as Princess Fiona in Northwest School of the Arts’ production of Shrek the Musical. Her school also won the Wells Fargo Best Musical Award for that production. Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. Catch Corrigan with the cast of Fun Home at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts June 27-July 2 as part of the 2016-2017 PNC Broadway Lights.

Welcome to the Kit Kat Klub, and to John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s seductive masterpiece of a musical, Cabaret. The production you will see today, brought to life by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall (one of the most gifted directorial teams in the business), first slinked onto the Roundabout stage in 1998. The show presented a dark and dazzling vision for the iconic musical, stripping away showbiz sheen and sparkle to reveal an unadorned, visceral core: in the jagged choreography and raw sensuality of this production, we find a story both stark in its judgment and mesmerizing in its empathy. The 1998 production ran on Broadway until 2004 and proved to be a landmark moment in Roundabout’s history. In 2013, when conversations about a second revival began, I knew we had to take the opportunity to bring the musical to another generation of Broadway theatregoers. This is a production that deserves to be seen, whether for the first time or for a blissful encore. Following that exceptional second run on Broadway, I am incredibly proud to be sharing this milestone production with a national audience. This season marks Roundabout’s 50th Anniversary as a company, and in this historic year, I cannot think of a better production with which to share our work and mission with you. Since Roundabout’s founding, the company’s mission has been growing with our audience. Today, our seasons include expert revivals of rarely-seen classic plays like Machinal and The Winslow Boy, joyous reimaginings of timeless American musicals like Anything Goes and She Loves Me, and new works by the playwrights penning the classics of the future. Roundabout is committed to bringing thrilling, high-quality productions to each of our New York stages and to stages throughout the country. As a not-for-profit theatre, we are also dedicated to making these enduring stories accessible to the largest possible audience, through extensive education and audience development programs. Whether you have seen Roundabout’s work in New York or on the road (Cabaret marks our third national tour, following Twelve Angry Men and Anything Goes) or if you are joining us for the first time: thank you. Thank you for welcoming us to your theatre and for being a part of our 50th year. I hope you will visit us the next time you are in New York City, or online at RoundaboutTheatre.org. We are thrilled to continue growing our Roundabout family and to celebrate five decades of extraordinary productions and performances with you. Enjoy the show! Sincerely, Todd Haimes, Artistic Director

Do You Hear What I Hear?
A
Opera Carolina continues a 20-year tradition of caroling all over the county
nyone who thinks opera is high-falutin’ should hear Opera Carolina’s chorus sing “Frosty the Snowman.” Charlotte-area residents will have multiple chances throughout December to hear members of the chorus sing favorite songs of the season. From sacred hymns to frolicking jingles, their repertoire is extensive. So is the geographical territory the group covers. The season kicked off in November at the Southern Christmas Show. December caroling begins with “Christmas in Davidson” and continues through the Dec. 15 visit to Levine Children’s Hospital. Including two performances in November, there are eight caroling concerts this season. “We sing all the standards,” said Alina MacNichol, Opera Carolina’s director of customer service and community engagement and a 15-year veteran of the chorus. “We do ‘Away in a Manger’; ‘Joy to
the World’; ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.’ We also sing international songs – like ‘Riu, Riu, Chiu’ (sung in Spanish), ‘Silent Night for all the World’ (which is sung in five languages), ‘Christos Yennate’ (Greek) and ‘Il est ne le divin enfant’ (French). We have a wide repertoire.” Secular music like “The Nutcracker Jingle” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” will be on some of the set lists, as is a jazzy “Jingle Bells.” The caroling group varies in size from 10 to 24, but it always comprises members of the chorus, which has more than 60 voices, and resident company. It’s hard to know who loves this holiday tradition more – audiences or carolers. “It’s a wonderful way to share our love for all types of music,” MacNichol said. “We think it’s particularly important now to communicate the spirit of hope and unity across cultures, in light of the unrest the community has experienced recently.”
Here's the complete schedule of December mini-concerts: Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 from 2-5 p.m. Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.
