empowered a facilities task force that met with Opera Carolina staff to discuss the short- and long-term facility needs of the company. With the support of Opera Carolina patron Martin Welton and his company, Park Commercial Real Estate, the company found what Meena calls “an amazing historic home on Elizabeth Avenue.” Not only does the new space offer 25 percent more square footage than the company had in its rented headquarters, but the space also offers the ability to hold social functions, board and committee meetings, Opera Guild events and intimate performances. The board is currently reviewing options to maximize the use of the building and create a sense of community and permanence for Opera Carolina.
group that has been in existence for more than 65 years can hardly be considered a teen. But 66-year-old Opera Carolina is making a move that is a rite of passage for most teenagers. After years of renting space, the company is getting a place of its own. The 4,300-square-foot historic home at 1600 Elizabeth Ave. will be the Opera’s new headquarters. The home offers three floors of administrative and social gathering space in the close-in, historic Elizabeth neighborhood. The company made the move in late September from its current space in the Two Wells Fargo Center. James Meena, general director and principal conductor for Opera Carolina, says the move – and the building purchase – signal Opera Carolina’s financial strength and stability. “Throughout our amazing legacy of service, the Opera has rented office space,” he said. “We strongly felt it was time to invest in property that would not only serve our needs, but would enhance our financial stability – both now and in the future.” “It’s important for the community and patrons to know that Opera Carolina is in a strong financial position,” said Rob Engel, co-chair of Opera Carolina’s board. “Moving to a building the group owns solidifies that position even more.” The board of directors in early 2014

T
he Charlotte Symphony brings its exciting “Magic of Christmas” performance to Belk Theater Dec. 4-7. Conducted by Albert-George Schram, this favorite local tradition is complete with holiday classics but fresh with innovative collaborations. This year, the CSO welcomes guest artist and season six "American Idol" finalist Melinda Doolittle. A native of Tennessee, Doolittle honed her vocals with the gospel group Anointed. She went on to sing backup for musical legends, from Aretha Franklin to Aaron Neville and Michael McDonald, and her debut studio album “Coming Back to You” was released to rave reviews in 2009. Hear Melinda’s soulful rendition of “Mary, Did You Know?” and other seasonal favorites, such as “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” plus moving selections by the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte and the Charlotte Children’s Choir, including Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and “Joy to the World.” This concert is part of the Pops Series presented by Bank of America.

A Day in a Dancer's Shoes By Melissa Anduiza Charlotte Ballet dancer
M
y day begins at 8 a.m. with a strong dosage of Cuban coffee and a loving greeting from my German shepherd/lab mix, Theodore. I bustle around the kitchen collecting my breakfast and lunch for the day. Breakfast varies between eggs, cereal or yogurt and granola. It is vital that I eat every morning to fuel my body and mind for the day. I arrive at the Center for Dance with plenty of time to select my rehearsal wear, fix my hair and apply my makeup. As my fellow dancers and I enter the studio for our morning ballet class, there is a radiant energy throughout the room. We take our places at the barres, and slowly but actively, I do stretches that wake up my tight muscles. When I’m done with barre, I find the perfect pair of pointe shoes to wear for floor work during class. During Nutcracker season, I am very careful to separate which pairs of pointe shoes I will use for class and for rehearsals. If I am rehearsing for

Snow Queen, which requires an extensive amount of pointe work, I choose a pair of harder, more firm shoes for endurance, support and stability. If I am rehearsing for Arabian, this calls for much slower, grounded movements, so I use softer shoes. After the morning class, I check the dancer rehearsal to see what I typically rehearse from 11:15 a.m. to around 6 p.m. Two times a week, I end my work day with a Pilates mat class at 8th Street Studio. I have discovered how beneficial it is to condition and strengthen my body in order to aid with the already tough art form of ballet. I learn something new about myself every day and strive to constantly improve. Almost 12 hours after my day started, I am finally back home to Theo. I love to unwind by cooking a delicious and nutritious dinner while listening to Juan Luis Guerra or Marc Anthony. After a relaxing bath to relieve my sore muscles, I am in bed for at least eight hours of sleep before I wake up and happily do it all over again.

eltic Thunder is the brainchild of the show's producer Sharon Browne, who was also the original producer of the Celtic Woman Show. The Celtic Thunder Symphony Tour will be the show’s eighth tour of the USA since it was launched in 2008. The airing of the group’s first public television special came that same year and Celtic Thunder has consistently remained one of the most popular musical shows for stations throughout the U.S. Thrice hailed as Billboard’s Top World Music Artist and Top World Imprint (2008, 2009 and 2011), the phenomenon that is Celtic Thunder has achieved sales of over 2 million copies to date. Celtic Thunder also continues to extensively tour the USA, Canada and Australia, performing to more than 700,000 fans over the past seven years. Holiday Symphony CD, on which the
Symphony Tour is based, is the show's 11th CD release since its inception. Celtic Thunder has also released nine charttopping DVDs since 2008. The group’s mass appeal and devoted fan base continues to grow with impressive statistics to prove it. Celtic Thunder’s official YouTube channel, “Thunder Tube” has seen over 28 million-upload views since the channel’s inception in 2008. Celtic Thunder has performed at the White House for President Obama and the First Lady, at the Pentagon for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as on the CBS Saturday Show’s Second Cup Café, the Today Show and Fox and Friends. WHO'S WHO IN THE CELTIC THUNDER SYMPHONY TOUR KEITH HARKIN (Soloist) Keith Harkin comes from County Derry in Northern Ireland where he started performing for the public at the tender age of 4, wowing Harkin audiences with his beautiful voice and musical talent. Now at 27, Keith has played to audiences across Europe, Australia, the USA and Canada. He has performed many times at the Tavistock Festival in the U.K., and at the Glasgowbury Festival in Northern Ireland and has composed and recorded songs for the BBC show “Dha Theanga,” an Irish language program on the BBC, in which he played a lead role. Keith is a guitar-playing singersongwriter. He was one of the first artists signed to Verve Records under the new leadership of chairman David Foster, the Grammy Award-winning producer who also served as executive producer on Keith’s debut solo CD. The self-titled album's 12 songs range between original compositions and classic covers illustrating Keith's gifts as both an interpreter and a writer. The song selections on the album truly reflect Keith's musical passions. "I've learned that there's nothing worse than doing a song you don't love," he says. As a huge Van Morrison fan, Keith takes particular pride in his version of "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," performed as a duet with Colbie Caillat. Although he has released his solo
album, Keith continues to play an integral role as one of the lead soloists in Celtic Thunder, touring with the show in the U.S. and Australia in 2014. His career with Celtic Thunder began back in 2007, when returning back to Derry from a recording session in London, Keith heard about the auditions for Celtic Thunder that were underway and decided to take a chance calling in just as the auditions were wrapping up. He auditioned and was immediately invited to attend the final auditions in Dublin where he was ultimately selected as one of the principals for the Celtic Thunder show. The self-described “singersongwriter-surfer” does not fit into any particular role in Celtic Thunder. As an avid surfer, though, he's not afraid of taking risks, and is able to enjoy the sense of artistic achievement he's already attained. NEIL BYRNE (Soloist) Neil fell in love with music as a kid when he dragged some suitcases down from the attic and started drumming on them. His destiny was sealed when he was 6 Byrne and watched his father’s three-piece band play at a wedding. “The sound just completely blew me away,” he recalls. “I didn’t really understand what I was listening to, but I just understood it was absolutely wonderful.” Shortly after, Neil swapped his drums for a guitar and then added
17B
WHO'S WHO IN THE CELTIC THUNDER SYMPHONY TOUR vocals at the recommendation of his dad. “He told me, ‘Listen, if you learn to sing, you’ll never go hungry.’” Neil took the advice and started playing professionally with his father’s band before branching out into jazz and then forming a retro funk band called Hipple Street that had a fair amount of chart success. If he woke up one day to find that playing music wasn’t a career option, Neil would be designing expensive automobiles. “In addition to being a full-time musician, my dad was a Mercedes mechanic,” Neil explains. “He used to bring home some of the big S-class Mercedes sometimes, and as kids, he used to bring us out in them on the duel carriageway.” Underage driving adventures aside, music was always Neil’s first love. As he played in his father’s band, he was fortunate to play (and study) alongside one of Irelands most renowned jazz bass players, Frank Hess, and begin to learn about musical arrangements. A mutual friend invited Neil to play at a function for one of Ireland’s most renowned songwriters and producers, Phil Coulter. This led to him playing bass in Phil Coulter’s band on a full time basis. From there Neil was asked to record backing vocals for the Celtic Thunder DVD, then moved to lead guitar and eventually to one of the lead vocalists in the show. In 2010, he released the solo EP “Sensitive Souls,” which Hotpress Magazine says, “shows him as a classy singer of soulful pop,” proving
that his dad knew what he was talking about. Since joining Celtic Thunder, Neil has toured America, Canada and Australia extensively with the show. RYAN KELLY (Soloist) Ryan comes from The Moy in Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Although he studied accountancy at Queens University, Belfast, and is a Kelly qualified Chartered accountant by trade, music and theater have always been Ryan’s true passion. He first began singing in public at the age of 7 and has won many accolades and awards for his performances, including SCOR 2007, a national Irish Singing Competition, and the BBC’s Country Cool competition in 2003. In his solo career, Ryan has performed alongside Westlife, Girls Aloud and Simply Red at a televised “Children In Need” charity concert. He also released his solo debut album, “In Time,” in October 2011 to great critical acclaim and won an Irish Music Award that same year. Ryan’s love of musical theater has led him to perform the lead role in the Willie Russell musical Blood Brothers and the role of Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar. Ryan is a fanatical sports fan and has played Gaelic football and basketball at the national level. One of the highlights of Ryan’s Celtic Thunder journey so far was the opportunity to 17C
WHO'S WHO IN THE CELTIC THUNDER SYMPHONY TOUR stand alongside his Celtic Thunder cast mates in TD Garden in Boston and sing the U.S. National Anthem to open a game for his beloved Celtics. One of the original members of Celtic Thunder, Ryan was between banking jobs when his brother told him about the audition for “an Irish touring band of America.” Ryan thought “I’m not doing anything else, so I should see what this is all about.” “At the audition, we had to write a few lines about ourselves and what we’d done,” says Ryan. Phil (Coulter) saw that I’d just finished playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, and it turns out he’d produced the first touring Irish production of it.” Celtic Thunder’s producer Sharon Browne was looking for someone who could “sing like they had a mean streak,” and when Ryan sang as Judas, it all came together. Ryan’s love for drama made him the perfect pick for the role of the “rogue” or “Dark Destroyer” in Celtic Thunder shows. Nothing could have prepared Ryan however for the momentum surrounding Celtic Thunder. “It’s great fun being the bad guy,” he says. “For me, there’s no better role, and they’ve given me great songs to do it with. Besides, thankfully I’m a much better singer than I was an accountant!” Ryan has toured the U.S., Canada and Australia with Celtic Thunder since 2008. In addition to touring Australia his year, Ryan returns to the U.S. this fall for the Celtic Thunder Symphony Tour and the second Celtic Thunder Cruise.
COLM KEEGAN (Soloist) Colm Keegan is 24 years old and hails from Dublin in Ireland. As a schoolboy, Colm studied under vocal coach Ken Shellard and won several Keegan highly acclaimed awards at the Dublin Feis Ceoil singing competition. During this time, he was also a lead soloist with the Palestrina Choir (under the direction of Ite O’Donovan) and a regular performer at Dublin’s National Concert Hall. Colm has performed with the Palestrina Choir in Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral, New York’s St Patrick’s Cathedral and St Peter’s Basilica in Rome where the Pope was in attendance. From this lofty beginning, Colm went on to join the prestigious Piccolo Lasso Choir and the Habemus Chamber Choir, with whom he recorded several CDs, partook in an extensive European tour and performed as a lead soloist in Spain, Ireland and The Czech Republic. Colm also has a great love of musical theater, and he has played the lead role of Sky Masterson in “Guys and Dolls” and has been cast in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirate’s of Penance.” Colm won a music scholarship to attend University College Dublin, where he was conferred with an honors degree in music and Irish in 2011. While he was studying in UCD, he was invited to join the choir of Celtic Woman for their “Songs From the Heart” CD and DVD Public Television 17D
WHO'S WHO IN THE CELTIC THUNDER SYMPHONY TOUR special, and he has since toured with the production in the U.S., Europe and Japan. He has also performed with PBS favorites “The Priests” at the O2 Arena in Dublin and alongside Irish tenor Peter Corry at the Helix, Dublin. Colm is a very keen sportsman and plays rugby, Gaelic football and hurling. He has represented Leinster in the Junior Cup for rugby and has been on a Leinster Final winning team for Gaelic Football. In addition to these team sports, Colm has also completed several triathlons. He loves travel and new experiences and has travelled widely with his music career and with the charity Habitat for Humanity, where he has worked building houses with local communities in Ghana and Zambia. Since graduating college in 2011, music has continued to be the main focus in Colm’s life. He is currently honing his skills as a songwriter and a performer and has eclectic musical influences, drawing from his Choral, Irish, Pop and Folk backgrounds, all helping him develop his own style. Colm was invited to join Celtic Thunder by producer Sharon Browne in May 2012 and was delighted to join with the other principals to become the newest member of the show. He performed with Celtic Thunder for the first time at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City in June of 2012 and toured with the show in U.S. and Canada fall tours in 2012 and 2013. 2014 saw Colm’s first Australia tour with Celtic Thunder. He returns to the U.S. this fall with the Celtic Thunder Symphony Tour and for the Celtic
Thunder Cruise. EMMETT O’HANLON (Soloist)
Irish American Baritone Emmett O’Hanlon was born and raised in New York City. Now 23 years old, Emmett admits to having been O'Hanlon seduced by music from a very early age. His foray into the world of music began with guitar, piano and drum lessons when he was just 6 years old. He first met his longtime voice teacher, Terence Goff, when he turned 8 and began formal voice training at that stage. While he was still in high school, Emmett made the decision to pursue a future in music, specifically singing. Since then, he has received a bachelor’s degree in voice from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he also performed as a soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Once he received his undergraduate degree in music, Emmett went on to join the prestigious Julliard School in New York, where he is currently completing a master’s degree in voice, studying under the tutelage of Dr. Robert C. White Jr. He also recently took part in the “Julliard in Paris” project, sponsored by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation. Last season, Emmett performed in both productions in Julliard Opera’s double bill, Britten’s Curlew River and Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, as well as in this season’s Metropolitan 17E
WHO'S WHO IN THE CELTIC THUNDER SYMPHONY TOUR Opera workshop production of The Sorrows of Frederick. At present, he is preparing for the role of Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Emmet has also participated in many classical training programs and has also been an apprentice artist in the Bel Canto Young Artist Mentoring Program at Caramoor. Emmett is not the only musical member of his family. His mother, who hails from Carrick-on Suir in Co. Tipperary, and his father who comes from Co. Armagh, both sang and were involved with theater from an early age. His elder brother and younger sister have also both studied music at the university.
In addition to his passion for music, Emmett is an avid sportsman who loves to surf and snowboard. He is also a huge fan of American football, baseball and most watersports, which he follows with a keen interest. Emmett first met Celtic Thunder producer Sharon Browne in New York City, where she invited him to audition for the show. He is a natural fit with the rest of the soloists in Celtic Thunder. Young, energetic and extremely talented, Emmett is looking forward to his next adventure and to touring with Celtic Thunder for the first time on the Celtic Thunder Cruise 2014 and as part of the USA Symphony Tour in November.

Finish That Lyric Jackson 5 – “ABC”
lumenthal Performing Arts fans are likely to know the lyrics to hundreds of show tunes, but let’s put your knowledge to the test with one of our upcoming Broadway Lights shows! Motown The Musical is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. In August, you can experience it live on stage in the recordbreaking smash hit Motown The Musical! See if you can fill in the blanks at the right to finish the lyrics to some popular Motown hits.
“A B C. It's easy as, 1 2 3. As simple as, do re mi. A B C, 1 2 3. Baby, you and … _ _ _ _ _ _” Diana Ross – “Aint No Mountain High Enough” “Ain't no mountain high enough. Ain't no valley low enough. Ain't no river wide enough. To keep me … _ _ _ _ _ _ _.” Temptations – “My Girl” “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside, I've got the month … _ _ _ _ _” Answers are upside down on the bottom of the page.

n honor of the wackiness of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra coming to McGlohon Theater in January, we have a fun challenge for you. See if you can find the four things that are different in the photos at right. Answers are upside down at the bottom of the page. Renowned for their winning combination of charming Kiwi humor, the disarmingly small ukulele and sublime musicality, the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra is one of the world’s great modern ukulele acts. The wildly popular New Zealand ensemble create instant joy and lasting magic wherever they go, armed with high-octane ukulele solos, heavenly harmonies and outrageous costumes. Their comedic banter is spontaneous, and when they burst into song, the sweet sounds can silence a room in a nanosecond or bring a crowd of thousands to their feet. Don’t miss this amazing act when it comes to McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square Jan. 14. Visit BlumenthalArts.org or call 704-372-1000 for tickets.
