Former Business Woman Finds Friends in the Arts as Volunteer Usher and Patron
M
ary Marie Mitchell dabbled in the performing arts as a young woman. During college she studied languages and design, but still made time for music and ballet courses and small parts in musicals. As is true in life, Marie didn’t land where she expected she might after college. A series of twists and turns led her to open the gift shop Michel's with her brother Michel in their hometown Charlotte in 1951. Over the years, they sold tobacco, novelties and giftware, and in less true-to-gift-shop form, lent myriad items from the shop as props for local theater. In exchange, they received tickets to the shows. And these props-fortickets experiences got Marie in the habit of patronizing the performing arts, so to speak. Later, in the ’90s, Charlotte was a city fast in transition. Michel had passed away and Marie was running the gift shop on her own when she was approached to sell the building that housed Michel's to make way for construction of the new Belk Theater. Marie decided to sell and retire. But she couldn’t stay away from the theater or the spot where Michel’s once stood. That’s when Marie became a volunteer usher. This is her 21st season as an usher. "I've made a lot of friends – oh my gosh, yes!" she said, referring to the impressive network of friends and family she has created through the arts. “It’s amazing how many interesting people you meet as an usher, or participating in arts groups in any way. It’s a big part of my life.” Believe it or not, Marie was not a Symphony-goer before she became an usher. But once she started volunteering at concerts, she gradually fell in love. She now subscribes to the Symphony’s Pops and KnightSounds series and ushers as many

Classics concerts as she can manage. Marie’s dedication to the performing arts doesn’t stop there. Not only is she a loyal supporter of the Charlotte Symphony, but she also sits on the board of North Carolina Dance Theatre and contributes to Theater Charlotte and other local cultural groups. She also sings in her church choir, runs her church’s volunteer gift shop and dances on occasion. At the end of the day, though, Marie says, “I’m just a plain old person. I enjoy life, take one day at a time; the arts, music – it’s not my life’s work, it’s my lifetime hobby.” Look for Marie next time you attend the Symphony. Say hello and, on behalf of all of us who appreciate how music enriches our lives, thank her.

Cinderella’s Special Slippers
S
torytelling at its finest, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux’s colorful and classic Cinderella is full of magic, humor and romance. Audiences of all ages enjoy the beloved fairy tale of a young girl who goes from being a lonely servant to a beautiful princess. With extravagant sets and costumes, and powered by Prokofiev’s lush score, Cinderella includes a rich array of characters including silly stepsisters, a delightful princess, entertaining puppets and, of course, a handsome prince. In North Carolina Dance Theatre’s Cinderella, you won’t find any glass slippers. Instead, Cinderella wears pointe shoes. Like the classic fairy tale, Cinderella’s pointe shoes are only suited for her. Pointe shoes are a ballerina’s most important tool. They allow ballerinas to dance on the tips of their toes and create the illusion of floating. “My pointe shoes become a part of me when I dance, almost like an extension of my body,” said company dancer Sarah Hayes Watson. Pointe shoes look dainty, but they are actually very sturdy. The tip of the shoe is a box made of densely packed fibers and hardened by glue. Because of their importance, a lot of time is spent finding the perfect pair.
“They must be molded and tailored specifically to my feet, and they withstand a lot of wear and tear,” said Watson. “You want the shoe to be supportive while also creating the perfect look.” Even after the shoes are tailor-made, each dancer also has a unique process to break in their shoes. The breaking in process might include using a hammer to soften the box of the shoe or adding glue to make the pointe shoes stiffer. The dancers sew on their own elastics and ribbon. Despite all the work to perfect their pointe shoes, some shoes only last through a day of rehearsals. If a performance is very demanding on their shoes, a dancer will use a new pair for every performance. “A pair of shoes costs an average of $93, and the company purchases about 475 pairs a year,” said Director of Artistic Operations Edna Mae Berkey. “It’s a priority of the company to make sure the dancers have the pointe shoes they need.” Watson said, “I really love dancing on pointe. It creates a sense of magic when I dance.” Join North Carolina Dance Theatre in March as the Prince reunites with his Cinderella because of her special slippers.

THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS The nights before Christmas ... The sights and sounds of traditional Christmas are everywhere in brilliant glowing images of St. Nicholas, trimming the tree, singing Christmas carols and exchanging gifts with loved ones. In a time of year when everyone joins together in a festive holiday mood, and with family spirit more important than ever, The Colors of Christmas is a special holiday event that will touch the hearts of people of all ages in a magical evening filled with Christmas music and hit songs. There’s no better way to capture the warmth and magic of the holiday season than to hear the finest singers and a full orchestra performing the music of the season. The Colors of Christmas is a new generation of Christmas show designed for today’s audience as a contemporary alternative to the standard holiday attraction. As the previous tours swept across the country, this show has fast become an annual centerpiece in many major cities across America. The houselights dim, and the main curtain reveals these four contemporary artists singing with a full orchestra. After the introduction, the show officially gets started with our headline artists each performing a solo, including hit songs and classic Christmas songs such as: “Oh Holy Night’’ “What Child Is This” “The Christmas Song” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
So many people in different lands and at different times contributed to the Christmas we enjoy today, and although there are many meanings of Christmas, The Colors of Christmas celebrates the season’s music in one spectacular celebration. We invite you to join us for a night of Christmas – a celebration of holiday spirit. Capture the magic of the season ...

THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS PEABO BRYSON He is one of the premier vocalists in contemporary music, and with 25 years of music making to his credit, Peabo Bryson is expanding his creative horizons as a producer and songwriter. As witnessed by his outstanding debut for Windham-Hill Records, this twotime Grammy-Award winning legend is reaching new heights with a set of exceptional material, much of which he wrote and produced with musical partner Regina Troupe. To a collection of tailor-made original songs that showcase Bryson’s rich, soulful style, this internationallyrenowned performer adds an emotive reading of Leon Russell’s classic “A Song for You” and an infectious cover of the 1979 Rufus & Chaka Khan hit “Ain’t Nobody.” From the sensuous, tropical flavor of “On and On” to “Did You Ever Know,” the kind of standout performance ballad that has made him a fixture on the music scene, Bryson has delivered an album sure to satisfy the loyal global audience he’s created for himself over the past two decades. Teaming with longtime friend and duet partner Roberta Flack, there’s “The Gift,” a poignant tune that is a reminder of the pair’s vocal chemistry. “My Heart Belongs to You” is another Bryson highlight, while the easy-going, finger-snapper “Somebody in Your Life” demonstrates Bryson’s ability to handle groove tunes along with the quiet storm and adult contemporary ballads that have made him a longtime favorite among pop and R&B listeners. With almost 20 albums to his credit,
Bryson’s career has gone continued to grow, particularly during the past decade. Enjoying an unprecedented, across-the-board level of international success, Bryson has the distinctions of being the first artist in music history to have separate records topping four different charts. One was “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme),” a duet with Regina Belle that won an Oscar as best song in 1992 and earned Bryson a Grammy Award for best pop vocal by a duo or group, topping the pop and adult contemporary charts. Another was new recording of the classic musical “The King and I,” featuring Bryson and Tony-winner Lea Solonga on the song “We Kiss in a Shadow,” which became No. 1 on the classical crossover charts. Saxophonist Kenny G’s multiplatinum “Breathless” included Bryson on “By the Time This Night Is Over,” which topped the contemporary charts and also enjoyed a three-month run as a hit single on the hot 100 in 1993. But acclaim and recognition are nothing new to this multitalented singer, songwriter and producer, born in Sheville, S.C. Exposed to music at an early age, Bryson began singing with local bands during his teen years, performing on the famed “chitlin circuit” and gaining the kind of experience that would help prepare him for a solid career as a recording artist and entertainer. In 1975, Bryson signed with Atlantabased Bang Records and enjoyed some initial success on the R&B charts with tunes like “I Can Make It Better” and “Underground Music.” However, it was after switching to Capital Records in 1977 that he gained national attention, thanks to top 10 R&B hits like “I’m So Into You” and “Reaching For the Sky,” the title track for his Capital debut gold
17B
THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS album, which also included the classic “Feel the Fire.” Further success followed with the gold album “Crosswinds,” and Bryson rapidly became one of the most popular headliners, touring nationally throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s. His six-year tenure with Capital also included major hit duets with Natalie Cole (“Gimme Some Time” and “What You Won’t Do for Love”) and Roberta Flack, with whom he scored his first pop breakthrough via “Tonite, I Celebrate My Love,” taken from the 1983 gold “Born to Love” album. In 1984, Bryson signed with Elektra Records and achieved instant success with the top 10 pop and R&B smash “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again,” which also topped the adult contemporary charts. Further hits followed, including “Without You,” a 1987 duet with Belle. In 1989, Bryson returned to Capital, claiming his first R&B chart-topper with “Show and Tell,” from the top 10 R&Bcharted album “All My Love.” In 1990, he moved to Columbia Records and recorded the album “Can You Stop the Rain.” The title track also became a No. 1 hit R&B single. “Lost In the Night” was nominated for a 1992 Grammy Award. In 1991, Bryson teamed up with international superstar Celine Dion to record the theme tune for Disney’s film, “Beauty and the Beast”; the result, a No. 1 pop hit, a Grammy for best vocal by a duo or group and an Oscar for best song. In 1992, Bryson repeated that success, this time with Belle on another Disney derived tune, when “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme)” hit the top of the charts and won Bryson a slew of awards. His 1994 Columbia album “Through the Fire” contained both movie themes, and since that
time, Bryson has toured the world, singing at The Miss America Pageant in 1995. Demonstrating his skills as an actor, he appeared in the lead role for the touring production of the Tony Awardwinning “Raisin” (based on “Raisin In the Sun”) and in the role of The Wizard in a touring company of “The Wiz.” In 1998, he appeared in the Michigan Opera Theater’s 100th anniversary production of The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess and also recorded two songs for the soundtrack for the “Barney” movie, one of which became the lead song for the album – the Bryson-produced “Dreams.” Bryson spent a good portion of 1998 also working on his much-anticipated “Private Music” debut, and for his many avid fans the world over, the wait has been worthwhile. Whether he’s expressing heartfelt sentiments through the mellow “Unconditional Love” or grooving on “Eye On You,” Bryson is at his intimate best – a legendary vocalist offering a timeless mix of pop and soul as only he can. MELISSA MANCHESTER Grammy Award-winning artist Melissa Manchester was born in New York where her father was a bassoonist for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He introduced her to all the classics, and by the age of 15, Manchester was already a published poet. After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts, where she studied acting, Manchester entered New York University and enrolled in
17C
THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS a songwriting class taught by Paul Simon. She landed a staff writing job at Chappell Music and performed as a solo singer/pianist in the clubs for Greenwich Village and Manhattan’s Upper West Side. There she met Bette Midler, who greatly contributed to her rapid ascent. As a backup singer for Midler, Manchester fulfilled her childhood fantasy of playing at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract and shortly thereafter was headlining Carnegie Hall and performing for soldout audiences. Manchester’s albums have established her as one of the most compelling singer/songwriters in contemporary music. Her debut albums “Home to Myself” and “Bright Eyes” positioned her as a dynamic new talent, and her album “Melissa” launched the smash hit single “Midnight Blue.” “Lovers After All,” from her “For the Working Girl” album, the sensual ballad that she wrote and performed as a duet with Peabo Bryson, was a hit on the pop and R&B charts. Manchester also co-wrote “Whenever I Call You Friend” with Kenny Loggins, which has become a radio classic. In 1980, she became the first artist in the history of the Academy Awards to have two nominated movie themes in a given year: “Ice Castles” and “The Promise.” Manchester went on to make Oscar history by performing both of these works in their entirety during the show. Manchester was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1978 and 1979. She received the Grammy Award in 1982 for best female vocalist for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You,” from her “Hey Ricky” album produced by
Arif Mardin. For her acclaimed 1989 album, “Tribute,” Manchester came full circle, honoring the singers who influenced her. From Garland to Streisand, Piaf to Fitzgerald, Manchester paid a sincere and touching tribute to some remarkable entertainers with this lush collection of classics. Manchester has combined her acting and singing in starring roles in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Song and Dance, Music of the Night and in a recurring role for the hit television series “Blossom.” She also worked again with Midler, co-starring in the film For the Boys, released by 20th Century Fox. Manchester released a Christmas album on Angel/EMI Records titled “Joy,” which the New York Times called “a heartfelt Christmas album that sounds classic on first listen.” In yet another career first, Manchester wrote the musical I Sent a Letter to My Love, based on the Bernice Rubens novel by the same name. She performed the leading role in a National Public Radio broadcast premiere in 1998. Manchester also worked on another album with tours in Australia, Japan and America, and wrote the score for Lady and the Tramp II, the sequel to the beloved Walt Disney classic. RUBEN STUDDARD On today’s ever changing musical landscape, the definition of rhythm and blues fluctuates as much as the rolling hills of Birmingham’s Red Mountains. Generation Y looks to rhythm-driven
17D
THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS artists Ne-Yo, Trey Songz and Usher as the personification of soul while many Baby Boomers insist that only the raw, melodious sounds of soul men like Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye are the real deal. Ruben Studdard is the uniquely perfect combination of both schools of music, and he brings both exciting dimensions to “Letters From Birmingham” (Shanachie – March 13, 2012). This alluring concept album about the ups and downs of modern romance is the project Studdard has longed to make his entire career. With it, he exhibits stunning performances that range from an angelic falsetto on love songs like “Today” to hard-hitting dance floor grooves like “Turn You Out” that show off a raw vocal edge. It’s been almost a decade since Fox Television’s “American Idol” talent competition crowned Studdard its 2003 winner after he pulled 24 million votes and became a household name. In the years since, the Velvet Teddy Bear (as Gladys Knight nicknamed him for his smoothly soothing vocal style) has produced a string of gold and platinum albums, toured as Fats Waller in a national stage tour of Ain’t Misbehavin’, appeared on various television shows, toured in the comedy drama “Heaven I Need A Hug” with Robin Givens and played a pastor in the Trace Adkins film, “Lifted.” Along the way, he also picked up Grammy and American Music Award nominations and turned out now classic urban radio hits like “Sorry 2004,” “Superstar,” “Make Ya Feel Beautiful” and “Change Me.” He also scored a No. 1 Gospel hit with “I Need An Angel.” “Letters From Birmingham” is Studdard’s most personal set of music yet, and he’s hoping his vast fan
base will enjoy and be surprised by the album’s twists and turns. The 11-song set was produced by Elvis “Blac Elvis” Williams (Beyoncé, Fergie, T.I., Ludacris, Ciara) and Studdard’s longtime collaborator, Harold Lilly (who co-wrote Alicia Keys’ classic “You Don’t Know My Name” and who has collaborated with Luther Vandross, Fantasia and Angie Stone among others). “Even before I signed with Shanachie, we started working on songs together,” Studdard says of he and Lilly. “Martin Luther King Jr. had this famous letter from a Birmingham jail, and being from Birmingham, I’ve read it so many times. We were going through the Atlanta airport one day and they have this display for Martin Luther King Jr., and it just struck me to do the album as letters. Harold said he thought that it would be a tight concept. So after that we kind of made all of the songs into a letter concept.” This sack of musical letters tells the whirlwind tale of a 21st century courtship. The sultry “Love Skies” is a chivalrous pick-up track in which Studdard serenades with a romantic forecast calling for “love skies.” It’s love at first sight on “Sexy Mother,” a saucy echo of Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You” era music. Studdard teases on the surprisingly funkified and horn-driven “Turn You Out.” This straight-forward promise of satisfaction highlights Ruben singing, “When I give it to ya, you gonna want to shout.” A lifelong movie buff, Studdard transforms the Gene Wilder tune “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 children’s film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” into a love song. “People don’t write songs like that anymore,” he adds. “They just don’t. 17E
THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS If you listen to songs that were written anywhere between the 1920s and 1970s, people talked to each other differently than they do now, so the songs sound differently. I was always a fan of that song as a kid. That song was a highlight from the movie for me. I was almost afraid to do it because I wanted to be able to do it so it would sound like it fit with the rest of the album, but we worked it out. “My whole thing about this album was to just put the people together that I thought were the best in the business at writing records,” he explains. “Not just the best at writing radio songs but writing great songs because above anything else I want the album to be around longer than the regular album cycle.” Aside from two cover songs and one other track, Williams and Lilly either wrote or co-wrote the remaining songs. “We’ve been friends for so long,” Studdard says of Lilly “He was the first songwriter I worked with after ‘American Idol.’ We had so much in common and became great friends. He knows me better than anybody that’s ever worked with me before.” While making “Letters From Birmingham,” Studdard went into the studio and recorded a song with Heavy D., which happens to be the rap legends final recording. Mike City, who has produced Rhianna and Usher, sent Studdard the track. “They asked who I’d like to have rap on it,” he recalls. “In passing, I said Heavy D. Next thing I knew they were calling him on the phone. I was such a huge fan of his growing up. To get the opportunity to work with him was a blessing, and I hate that he had to leave us so soon.” One of the two songs Studdard penned with Lilly is arguably the
album’s most personal. It’s titled “June 28th (I’m Single),” and it happens to be the day in 2008 that he married Surata Zuri McCants whom he had met at a Wal-Mart in-store appearance in autumn 2006. Against a ’50s era piano pounding melody, Studdard sings, “June 28th I was saying I do to my bride, and two years later in October we said goodbye.” In it, he explains how he sought to make the marriage work in spite of her conflicting actions, and although “I’ll miss you,” he announces that he’s single and available: “So, if you see me on the street, don’t be afraid to speak.” In talking of the song while avoiding details, he chuckles and says, “It’s pretty much what it is. That song speaks for itself. It’s what we call the declaration of independence.” Always one to give back, Studdard created “The Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of Children in the Music Arts.” Through his foundation, Ruben strives to promote the essential role of the arts in education through learning initiatives for the development of students in the Greater Birmingham Area. He is also an official spokesperson for “Be Sickle Smart,” a nationwide grassroots health-education program aimed at increasing awareness of iron overload among people living with sickle-cell disease. Studdard also created and recently held The Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend in his home state of Alabama, in which he participated in a half marathon! The former football athlete (he received a scholarship to Alabama A&M University where he studied music) also recently became a vegan. A true musician, Ruben is equally at home in the world of R&B, Gospel, Jazz and Rock. He even has his own rock 17F
THE COLORS OF CHRISTMAS band called “Just a Few Cats.” The set of song and aural letters showcased on “Letters From Birmingham,” represents Ruben Studdard’s independence as an artist and showcases his R&B with a greater marriage of catchy hooks and sophisticated prose than his previous work. “I hope people will hear it and say, gosh these are great songs,” he says. “I wanted to make an album that you could put in and not take off, and it be on from start to finish … I think we did that. I hope in the next five years people will still be asking me to sing Love Skies.” CECE WINANS If you ask CeCe Winans what drives her, the answer will be far removed from her endless list of accolades, bestselling albums, widespread industry recognition, and vast amounts of press coverage. She’ll make no mention of the multiple Grammy®, Stellar and Dove awards she has garnered over the years, let alone the gold- and platinumcertified albums she’s scored – not even those she nabbed with brother BeBe as part of the hit-making duo BeBe & CeCe Winans. She won’t tell you she’s graced the covers of high-profile publications such as Essence, Jet, CCM and Today’s Christian Woman, among many others, or that she’s made her rounds in the talk-show circuit, making appearances
on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “Oprah,” “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee,” “The Grammy Awards” and more. And radio hits? Forget about it. When all is said and done, Winans’ heart lies someplace else. Having recorded eight solo projects, she shares, “When you play positive music, gospel, inspirational – whatever you want to name it – you’re teaching lessons to other people, which is still very important, and nothing is more powerful than when you’re face to face with God.” Much of Winans’ chart-topping music has seen the singer entertaining her pop sensibilities, proving that she excels at interpreting buoyant, life-affirming songs that a wider audience could embrace. Not one to pick favorites, she says she loves both ends of the spectrum. But something about singing for God and his church strikes a chord in her that not even the most uplifting, stirring pop tune can. No matter where she stands in the musical spectrum, Winans simply owns the lyric, cognizant that she’s simply preparing the listener for deeper intimacy with the divine God. “It’s great to sing songs that help us or that encourage us to live right, or to talk right, or to love each other – and those are all powerful messages, things that God smiles upon,” Winans says. “But when you just talk about the power of the living God and his awesomeness and his holiness, nothing is more powerful than that. It penetrates the heart more than anything.”

‘Opera, You Rock!’
Arts education for children is an essential part of Opera Carolina’s mission
T
he Opera Carolina staff is always thrilled by enthusiastic reactions and shouts of “Bravo!” from audiences in the Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. But there are other responses to great performances that are far more gratifying to the staff of the 65-year-old company – responses from students. In 2012-13, Opera Carolina served more than 42,690 area school children and teachers with performances in classrooms and school auditoriums. That marks a 37 percent increase in attendance over the previous school year. “Kids are an unfailingly positive audience,” says James Meena, general director of Charlotte’s Opera company. “They are uninhibited in showing us their appreciation.” That gratitude has come in the form of giddy thank-you notes from young fans. One letter, in response to The Magic Flute, was filled with exclamation points, stars, smiley faces and a crayon note that read, “Opera, you rock!!!! I want to be an opera singer when I grow up!”
“We want every young person in our community to have a front row seat to the magic of opera,” Maestro Meena says. “It’s our commitment to accessible arts education that, we hope, is inspiring kids to be lifelong arts supporters – and maybe even become artists themselves.” Opera Express, the educational touring company of Opera Carolina, has introduced nearly 1.5 million students to opera since its inception in 1971. These mobile productions help children in kindergarten through fifth grade see opera as a fun art form. The commitment to education is also evident in: • Opera Carolina Academy, which offers music, drama and vocal instruction, taught by professional singer-actors, for middle and high school students. • Student Night at the Opera, held during the final dress rehearsal of each production, offers all the pageantry of a regular night at the opera – but for a fraction of the cost. Tickets are just $5 per student and $10 for adults and include pre-performance singing by Academy students and an intermission Q-and-A with cast members. Those engagements are only possible through generous donations to the SPARK campaign, an initiative designed to build private support for cultural programming in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the surrounding region. The Opera Carolina staff gives an enthusiastic “Bravo!” (with exclamation points and smiley faces!) to the generous SPARK donors who make it possible for young fans to fall in love with opera.
