BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Continues To Delight
B
EAUTY AND THE BEAST returns to Charlotte June 26-July 1 with a production featuring new costumes, set designs and lighting.
BEAUTY & THE BEAST stands the test of time: “You cannot beat the classic tale that this show tells and the magic involved keeps kids interested as well as adults. Plus, how can you beat dancing forks and singing tea-pots? You can’t.”
Director Rob Roth, who made his Broadway debut in 1994 with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, reconvened the original creative team to rewrite and redesign the Disney classic. All were approved by the creators, including book writer Linda Woolverton and composer Alan Menken.
Logan Denninghoff (Gaston) on what it’s like to be the bad guy: “Gaston has such a wide range of actions and emotions to play ... In act two when I start plotting and becoming a little maniacal, getting my anger out on stage can be very freeing. It’s cool to have that outlet of the stage.”
“Its true message is that love is love is love,” said Roth of the French folk tale that became a beloved classic. “Love is love in Japan. Love is love in Brazil. Love is love in America. The story translates like that all over the world.”
Julia Louise Hosack, who has played Mrs. Pott, on her favorite scene: “Every night I watch Emily, Belle, as she is revealed in the iconic gold dress. You can hear the audience gasp because she looks absolutely stunning. This is the moment all of the little girls in their Belle dresses have been patiently waiting for. It sets and compliments the tone for the song ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which I am thrilled to sing.”

orth Carolina Dance Theatre’s 2012-2013 performance season has audiences experiencing an inspiring mix of new, contemporary ballets as well as classical favorites. Highlights of the season include Limitless this October, which features premieres by choreographers Sasha Janes and Dwight Rhoden, both known for their captivating choreography and challenging the dancers with complex moves. Rhoden, a former dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, has been featured on the hit Fox contest show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Next February, the annual Innovative Works series will give audiences an up close view of the dancers’ athleticism and passion exhibited in four new works. Jiri Bubenicek, who last worked with Dance Theatre in 2010, is traveling from Germany to create a new ballet for the Contemporary Fusion performance in April. Jiri’s ballet is joined by The Golden Section, a crowd

TWYLA THARP (Conception, Direction, Choreography) One of the most accomplished and versatile artists working today, Twyla Tharp has created groundbreaking work in ballet, modern dance and on Broadway, in addition to her successes in film, television and print. Ms. Tharp has choreographed more than 135 dances, five Hollywood movies and directed and choreographed four Broadway shows. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, 19 honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President’s Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize, and was a 2008 Kennedy Center Honoree. Her many grants include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In addition to choreographing for her own company Twyla Tharp Dance, she has created dances for The Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Miami City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Ms. Tharp’s work first appeared on Broadway in 1980 with When We Were Very Young, followed in 1981 by her collaboration with David Byrne on The Catherine Wheel at the Winter Garden. Her 1985 production of Singin’ in the Rain played at the Gershwin and was followed by an extensive national tour. In 2002, Ms. Tharp’s award-winning dance musical Movin’ Out, set to the music and lyrics of Billy Joel, premiered at the Richard Rodgers, where it ran for three years. A national tour opened in 2004 and also ran for three years. For Movin’ Out, Ms. Tharp received the 2003 Tony Award, the 2003 Astaire Award, the Drama League Award for Sustained Achievement in Musical Theatre and both the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Choreography. For the London production, Ms. Tharp won the Best Choreography (Musical Theatre) Award of the UK’s Critics Circle National Dance Awards 2006. In 2006, Ms. Tharp worked with Bob Dylan’s music and lyrics to create The Times They Are A-Changin’, which played at the Brooks Atkinson. Come Fly Away premiered at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2009 and played at the Marquis Theatre in 2010. In film, Ms. Tharp has collaborated with director Milos Forman on

Her television credits include choreographing Sue’s Leg for the inaugural episode of PBS’ “Dance in America”; co-producing and directing “Making Television Dance,” which won the Chicago International Film Festival Award; and directing “The Catherine Wheel” for BBC Television. Ms. Tharp co-directed the television special “Baryshnikov by Tharp,” which won two Emmy Awards as well as the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Director Achievement. In 1992, Ms. Tharp wrote her autobiography, Push Comes to Shove. In 2003, she wrote The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life and in 2009 The Collaborative Habit: Life Lessons for Working Together, both published by Simon and Schuster. Today, Ms. Tharp continues to create. FRANK SINATRA (Vocals) is one of the world’s most recognizable, admired and influential artists of all time, with a vast catalogue of music that is a soundtrack for our lives. Long acclaimed as the world’s greatest performer of popular music, he is the artist who set the standard for all others to follow. More than a singer, he was an actor, recording artist, nightclub and concert star, radio and television personality and, on occasion, producer, director and conductor. A beloved entertainer for six decades, Sinatra earned three Oscars, three Golden Globes (including the Cecil B. DeMille Award), ten personal Grammys (and a total of 20 for his albums), an Emmy, a Peabody and the Kennedy Center Honors Award. A generous charitable contributor, he was honored with the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Opera Carolina Ignites its Educational Programming
S
chool students across Mecklenburg County will enjoy up-close encounters with opera when Opera Carolina’s educational touring company, Opera Express, hits the road again this spring, entertaining and enlightening young audiences in more than 30 CharlotteMecklenburg elementary schools, as well as a dozen counties throughout the Carolinas. The engaging cast of locally based opera singers performs the children’s opera, Pinocchio, a modern adaptation of the famous children’s tale set to famous operatic scenes. Online teaching tools and excerpts from the opera are available for teachers and students alike to gain greater insight into the opera art form. Opera Express is designed for K-5 age groups, with study guide activities that address North Carolina Standard Course of Study Standards in English Language Arts and North Carolina Essential Standards in Music and Social Studies. Opera Express has been preserved in recent years by the collective vision of Opera Carolina’s Board of Directors, businesses and individual donors who understand the value and future benefits of early arts education. Responding to the vision, Opera Carolina has created a singular educational funding effort called the Spark Campaign. The campaign seeks to attract both new and sustaining private
support to protect its 40-year history of education programming in CMS, and to secure ongoing funding for Opera Express’s long-term viability. Opera Carolina raised a total of $40,500 from generous individuals and corporate sponsors American Tire Distributors, Deloitte, Husqvarna, K & L Gates, Kilpatrick Stockton, King & Spalding, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., TOA Technologies and Womble Carlyle. These funds supplement a $10,000 grant from the Arts & Science Council. “Opera Carolina is profoundly grateful to these sponsors who have stepped forward to demonstrate such a far-reaching and enduring commitment to arts and education,” said General Director James Meena. “Funding programs like Opera Express allows students from CMS’ diverse neighborhoods to experience live opera in their own schools. Eighty percent of Opera Express performances this spring will be in CMS Focus Schools.” Since 1971, Opera Express has served more than one million children with such favorites as The Billy Goats Gruff, An Aesop Odyssey, Pinocchio, How Nanita Learned to Make Flan, and more. Opera Carolina’s other education programs include The Opera Carolina Academy, Student Night at the Opera, and Master Classes for regional university students.

Digital Artwork world Premiere: May 4, 2012 In a groundbreaking endeavor that combines old and new, aural and visual and blends digital technology with centuries of respected tradition, the Symphony has commissioned a piece of digital artwork by artist Matthew Weinstein that will premier at a May 4 performance. Weinstein’s work is an original animated video to be displayed on a screen suspended above the orchestra. The audience will experience brilliant animation in sync with the hypnotic music of Ravel’s Bolero. Don’t miss this astounding performance that just may redefine the way you think about art.
Summer Pops Begins! June 10, 2012 Outdoor picnics, families, fireworks, fun and great music. A beloved Charlotte summer tradition continues on June 10, when the Charlotte Symphony Summer Pops season begins at Symphony Park. Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos will lead the first performance, with the crowd-pleasing Albert-George Schram leading all other concerts. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children under 18. Summer passes for all five concerts are also available for $35. Tickets will be available for purchase at Symphony Park starting at 4 p.m. preceding each performance, and gates to the park open at 5 p.m. Come out to enjoy beautiful symphonic music under the summer stars!

eturning for their hilarious eighth edition of CHARLOTTE SQUAWKS, the creative team of Mike Collins and Brian Kahn will once again collaborate with area singers, dancers and actors to parody pop-culture, politics, sports and our beloved Queen City.
5. Will he or won’t he? The “he” being former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, who now is running for governor and is a notorious scene-stealer. His past appearances in Squawks suggest he’s got a future in comedy if the political thing doesn’t work out.
