Mayer Brown is proud to join in celebrating the miracle of dance and the other performing arts that the Blumenthal brings us. It’s the magic that inspires us to support the arts in Charlotte and around the world.
“Think of the magic of
the foot,
comparatively small,
upon which
your whole
weight rests . . .
dance is
a celebration
of that miracle.”

Everything Old Is New Again Opera Recycles has upcycled 18,000 pieces of marketing material
W
hen you buy tickets to an Opera Carolina performance, you’re supporting the arts and the environment. Since 2015, Opera Carolina has recycled nearly all of the paper and fabric detritus of each season. Marketing Director Megan Miller noticed the leftover marketing materials – banners, postcards, posters and programs – and thought there had to be a way to make use of them. She partnered with a designer to create a couture ball gown out of the unused material and fabric scraps. The first ball gown debuted in 2015 when a model wore it to the premiere of The Barber of Seville. This was no one-time gimmick, though. Since then, one dress has been made to commemorate every opera the company has produced. Each is beautiful and surprisingly durable. Not only that, the gowns have hit runways in:
The fashion designers who create the dresses have become opera fans through their work on the gowns. And Miller has become even more environmentally conscious. “I’ve turned into a scavenger,” she said. “I’m always looking for scraps in the costume shop to pass along to our designers.” Thanks to Opera Recycles, more than 18,000 pieces of marketing collateral have been rescued from the waste stream and upcycled into high fashion. And that’s the highest use possible for a discarded program.
• New York (twice) • Paris • Charleston, S.C. Opera Carolina partners with local designers who create stunning, wearable works of art after the close of each opera. Miller asks, “What better way to market art than through art?” The fun, one-of-a-kind dresses have evolved from environmental project to fashion statement to a successful marketing tactic for Opera Carolina.
Dress designed by local Charlotte designer Lyndsee Hairston.

Pointe Shoes: What’s the Point?
C
harlotte Ballet’s new Sleeping Beauty: A Fairy-Tailored Classic, which debuts in March at Knight Theater, features gorgeous elements of classical choreography – including dancers en pointe. If you’ve ever wondered what is the point of pointe shoes, read our Q&A below. • First things first: what are pointe Q: shoes? • Pointe shoes are special shoes that A: allow dancers to move seemingly effortlessly on their toes. In essence, pointe shoes can create the illusion of floating on air. • Is it true that the toes of pointe Q: shoes are made from wood? • Not exactly. The tips of pointe shoes A: are hard boxes made from a dense fiber like cardboard or paper. The body of the shoes are made from layers of fabric and glue covered in satin. Dancers have pointe shoes customized to their own feet, and there are different methods for breaking them in – kind of like breaking in a sports glove. • At what age do dancers begin Q: training in pointe shoes? • There is no exact age when dancers A: begin pointe, but a good reference is several years after ballet training begins to ensure a dancer’s legs are strong enough to go en pointe.
Q:• Is there a difference between “en pointe” and “on point?” A:• "En pointe" is a French term that specifically applies to ballet. Dancers moving gracefully on the tips of their toes are en pointe. “On point” has different meanings based on its origins. In law, it means applying directly to the topic under consideration. Under military circumstances, “on point” means to be ready for action. But for those of us who speak English, it’s acceptable to say a dancer is “on point” vs. "en pointe." Now that we’ve covered the basics, come and see the magic for yourself at Charlotte Ballet’s new Sleeping Beauty! Acclaimed British choreographer Matthew Hart has kept the best parts of this beloved ballet – classical choreography with dancers en pointe in glittering tutus and dazzling tiaras – but condensed it from its original threeplus hours in length to a fairy “tailored” performance closer to two hours run time. Two decades ago, The Cypress raised the bar for senior living. It’s still the highest. hen The Cypress of Charlotte opened 20 years ago, our goal was to create a retirement community that energized senior living, with no shortage of luxury. Today, The Cypress still sets the high bar for retiring well. It’s been two decades of meeting new friends and cherishing old ones, cultural enrichment, cuisine that’s among Charlotte’s best, and a stunning new sports and fitness center. But it’s the folks who live here, the members of our community, that keep The Cypress special after 20 years. Please, come see for yourself.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
