KnightSounds: The Music May Be Classical, but the Concert Format Is Anything But

W

ith KnightSounds, the Charlotte Symphony aims to create an atmosphere where people, especially Symphony newcomers, feel free from the constraints of a traditional black-tie affair, and comfortable to truly enjoy the experience of live classical music. FancyFriday-night-out patrons sometimes enjoy the opportunity to don their fancies, but audiences are just as welcome to wear blue jeans, and they do! The program offers a sampling of classical music – contemporary and traditional works – around a common theme, with uncommon educational commentary from the conductor between pieces and, sometimes, elements from other arts genres such as photography and dance. Billed as “Not just a concert, an event,” KnightSounds events offer concert-goers a free drink (and yes, you can bring your drinks inside the theater), an hour of music and a soiree-style post-concert party. The Symphony hopes that the experience is a memorable one: a fresh-format cultural event that is interactive and includes multimedia to connect with 21st-century music lovers. Rounding the end of a successful fourth season of its nontraditional KnightSounds series, the Charlotte Symphony looks forward to the remaining two 2014-2015 KnightSounds concerts, A Little Knight Music (March 28) and Carnivale! (May 9). The previous two KnightSounds sold out, so interested concert-goers should plan to purchase tickets in advance.

At its recent January KnightSounds concert, Sights & Sounds of America, the Symphony displayed iconic Ansel Adams landscape photography in sync with their live performance of Chris and Dave Brubeck's orchestral piece “Ansel Adams: America.” This is just one example of the multigenre format that a KnightSounds concert can take.

A Little Knight Music March 28, 7:30 p.m., Knight Theater Co-hosted by Discovery Place, this event is a drama-infused Mozart-academy-style presentation featuring “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” (“A Little Night Music”), “Serenata Notturna” and the Rondo from Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp. The program will close with a ceremonial disappearance of the orchestra to Haydn’s “Farewell Symphony.” Carnivale! May 9, 7:30 p.m., Knight Theater In collaboration with the North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance, this event will celebrate the coming of summer and the closing of the concert season with Dvorak's “Carnival Overture,” Vivaldi's “Summer” from “The Four Seasons” and Saint-Saens “Carnival of the Animals,” followed by a lively street festival on Levine Avenue for the Arts!

A Gossip-worthy Adaptation of Othello!

D

eception, desire and paparazzi take center stage in North Carolina Dance Theatre’s Othello, this April in the Knight Theater. N.C. Dance Theatre’s resident choreographer, Dwight Rhoden, premiered the ballet in 2009. Rhoden says he set out to give Shakespeare’s Othello a musical theater feel. To bring this Broadway-style production to life, Rhoden worked with composer David Rozenblatt, who created an original score for Othello, and saxophonist Arun Luthra, who performs live. “My version of Othello is loosely based on the music industry,” said Rhoden. “The story of Othello is the same, but I wanted it to be modern. I think people will be able to relate to the story because it could be ripped from the gossip headlines of today.” In Rhoden’s Othello, Iago, the story’s narrator, is a one-hit wonder with a stalled career and an insatiable hunger for the spotlight. He wishes to bring Othello, a powerful music industry exec, down and uses Othello’s pop star wife, Desdemona, in his scheme. Othello showcases the dancers’

athleticism and theatrical flair with seductive pas de deuxs and large scale, intricate dance numbers. “I wanted to do a Shakespeare piece, and what I do choreographically fits with the characterizations in Othello,” said Rhoden. Rhoden, a former star of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, joined N.C. Dance Theatre as resident choreographer in 2006. He travels to Charlotte several times a year to work with the company. Rhoden is the founding artistic director for Complexions Contemporary Ballet and has established a remarkably wide-ranging career, earning distinction from The New York Times as “one of the most sought out choreographers of the day.” His choreography has been featured on the hit Fox television show “So You Think You Can Dance,” and he’s worked with such high-profile artists as Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Kelly Clarkson. Join Dance Theatre in April for this sizzling, modern version of the Shakespeare masterpiece. Bonus – the evening of Othello opens with Jiri Kylian's soulful Forgotten Land.

Opera Carolina’s The Flying Dutchman Returns After 20 Years

A

s the legend goes, the Dutchman and his crew must roam the seas – allowed to come ashore only once every seven years. After 20 years, Opera Carolina brings back this powerful production in celebration of the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner. Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) is based on the legend of the titular Dutch sea captain condemned to ceaselessly sail the ocean. The legend appears in literature, theater and pop music. Tori Amos, Jimmy Buffett and Rufus Wainwright have made musical references to the ship that can never reach port. The cast has star power. “We are especially thrilled to reintroduce audiences to Greer Grimsley, one of the world’s most prominent Wagnerian singers, who last performed with Opera Carolina in 1998 as Don Giovanni,” says Maestro James Meena. Grimsley plays the title role with ferocity and is widely considered the foremost Dutchman in the world.
