Godspell Updated After Weaving Its Spiritual Spell for 40 Years
I
n the beginning – before he wrote Wicked – Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for Godspell, which plays Dec. 3-8 at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts. Schwartz was just 23 at the time, but he did have a little help from above, one might presume. The pop/rock musical that celebrates the teachings of Jesus Christ is, after all, based on the Gospel of Matthew. The Jewish composer, who also wrote Pippin, wasn’t even familiar with the Gospels when he wrote the now-famous lyrics. His biographer, Carol de Giere, recounts in “Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz” that he once said, “I was reading some of these parables for the first time. I basically was responding to the material fresh.” The hippie-era musical, with a book by John-Michael Tebelak – who also conceived of the radical idea – feels as fresh today as when it opened off-Broadway in 1971. The show moved to Broadway five years later and has played in touring companies and in church fellowship halls ever since. In “Defying Gravity,” de Giere says Tebelak had hoped to “weave God’s spell over the audience.” The tale, while timeless, got an update for its 2011 Broadway revival to include references to people and things definitely not
found in the Bible: Facebook, “The Donald” and Lindsay Lohan, among others. The original Godspell featured a troupe of clowns who follow Jesus around an abandoned playground where a chain-link fence serves as a backdrop. The updated version, with a multicultural cast, depicts Jesus and followers in the sort of clothes you’d see on any college campus. Godspell’s Jesus is teacher, mentor, friend and peacenik. Because the show focuses on his humanity more than his divinity, it appeals to people of all faiths ... and even to those without much faith. In her November 2011 USA Today review of the Broadway revival, Elysa Gardner wrote, “Regardless of your faith, or lack of it, you'll leave this Godspell a believer in the transporting power of musical theater.” If you doubt the crossover appeal of a musical rooted in the Bible, take note of “Day by Day,” the Godspell song about seeking a closer relationship with God that reached No. 13 on the Billboard chart in the summer of 1972. The song is now so ingrained in pop culture that Ben Stiller used it to surprisingly hilarious effect when he recited it as a blessing at the dinner table in Meet the Parents. Godspell’s timeless message of peace, love and redemption – and the show’s high-flying energy – will leave you saying “Amen.” — Article by Page Leggett

Opera Carolina’s Opera Express Set to ‘Bring the House Down’ With The Three Little Pigs
O
pera Express, the educational touring company of Opera Carolina, has begun a tour to present an operatic version of the classic fable “The Three Little Pigs” to students at nearly 50 elementary schools. The tour began Oct. 21. Since 1971, Opera Express has introduced nearly 1.5 million students to the joy of opera. These productions help children see opera as a fun art form and help teachers use it as a classroom resource. Designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, Opera Express performances are accompanied by study guide activities that address N.C. and national curriculum standards in English, arts, music and more. In this version of The Three Little Pigs – set to the music of Mozart operas – brother pigs build their homes of sticks and straw while their sister learns about home construction at the library and builds her house with bricks. After Wolfgang Bigbad blows down the pigs’ shoddily constructed homes, the brothers take refuge at their sister’s solidly built house and learn an important lesson about reading and being prepared. The message promoting the value of literacy is reinforced by student/teacher study guides and creative materials on the Opera website, plus Opera Carolina community volunteers will visit classrooms to
share their favorite books with students. The Three Little Pigs travels this fall and next spring for 10 weeks to elementary schools across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, with a special focus on CMS Title I Schools. “It is a thrill to introduce young people to the artistry of opera,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. Children always make enthusiastic audiences, and it’s a delight to perform for them.” This year’s Opera Express sponsors include title sponsor Duke Energy Foundation; American Tire Distributors; Charlotte Area Rotary Clubs; Husqvarna; Jimmie Johnson Foundation; Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton; King & Spalding; McAfee; Snyder'sLance; TOA Technologies; and Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP. Since 2009, Opera Express has been funded by donations to the Opera’s Spark Campaign, an initiative designed to build private support for cultural programming in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the surrounding region. The campaign goal for the 2013-14 school year is $90,000 to keep Opera Express engaging young audiences. Opera Express is part of Opera Carolina’s Education Department, which also offers The Opera Carolina Academy, Student Night at the Opera and Master Classes for regional university students.

The Charlotte Symphony Wishes You a Musical Holiday Season Magic of Christmas: Dec. 5-8, Belk Theater A hectic holiday calendar can make it hard to slow the pace and enjoy the spirit of the season, but don’t let the bah-humbugs get the best of you. Join the Charlotte Symphony (CSO) in making the most of this wonderful time of year by celebrating with a long-loved tradition: music. The Symphony will ring in the festivities the first weekend of December with treasures of the Christmas canon – religious and secular, instrumental and vocal, popular and classic – at its annual, family-friendly Magic of Christmas. Conductor Albert-George Schram will lead the orchestra, Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, Charlotte Children’s Choir and a host of spectacular guests through songs, including “O Tannenbaum,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Sleigh Ride,” Overture to Die Fledermaus and “Jingle Bells,” to name just a few. What highlights can Magic of Christmas audiences look forward to this year? • Bagpipes: Loch Norman Pipe Band will perform “Highland Cathedral” with the orchestra. • Aerialists from Caroline Calouche & Co.: Aerial silk and trapeze choreography to “Silent Night” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” • “Wassail, Wassail All Over the Tuba”: Special rendition by CSO principal tubist Aubrey Foard. • 'Twas the Night Before Christmas: Orchestral arrangement, narrated by CSO violinist Emily Chatham. • "God Bless Us Everyone" from Disney's recent A Christmas Carol: CSO principal horn, Frank Portone, will sing tenor to this popular version recorded by Andrea Bocelli. • And, as always, a few joyous audience singalongs!
Above: The Magic of Christmas. At right, aerialist from Caroline Calouche & Co. Photo by Michael Church
Handel’s Messiah: Dec. 18, Belk Theater The Symphony will also present a more formal staple of seasonal repertoire, Handel’s Messiah. This enduringly popular Englishlanguage oratorio has been rendered for centuries, all over the world. It moves thousands of people every year to joy, sorrow, exaltation and serenity, with the thrill of the Hallelujah Chorus and the dramatic grandeur of its music. Led by Director of Choruses and Assistant Conductor Scott Allen Jarrett, the CSO and Oratorio Singers of Charlotte will present the only full performance of Handel’s Messiah in Charlotte. With that, the Charlotte Symphony wishes you a very merry, and musical, holiday season!

In another long-ago life, she was a high-powered political consultant; she has worked for numerous senatorial and gubernatorial candidates and was National Media Director for the Dukakis and Tsongas presidential campaigns.
FORBIDDEN BROADWAY AND FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD Forbidden Broadway was first seen at Palsson’s Supper Club on New York’s Upper West Side in January 1982. What began as a simple cabaret act to give creator/lyricist Gerard Alessandrini a showcase for his talents and the opportunity to “find an agent” became New York’s longest running musical comedy revue. Hailed by critics and audiences alike, Forbidden Broadway won Drama Desk, Obie and Outer Critics Circle awards and captured the heart of the theatre industry itself. Many of its legendary “victims,” including Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Tommy Tune, Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince and Andrew Lloyd Webber, were among the celebrities who stopped by to applaud firsthand. Updated regularly for each new theatre season, Forbidden Broadway ran to packed houses at the 75-seat Palsson’s through August 1987. In September 1988, the show reopened at the 125seat Theatre East, where it ran an additional 5.5 years. The show also became known for talented but as yet unknown actors, many of whom have gone on to stardom in various venues: Jason Alexander (George Costanza in “Seinfeld”), Chloe Webb (Twins and the PBS series “Tales of the City”), Davis Gaines (Phantom), as well as Roxie Lucas (Damn Yankees), Gregg Edelman (City of Angels), Dee Hoty (Will Rogers Follies), Michael McGrath (Spamalot, The Martin Short Show), and Brad Oscar (The Producers). Forbidden Broadway’s success was repeated in Boston, where it enjoyed a 6.5-year stay at the 250-seat Terrace Room;
17D
Forbidden broadway Chicago and Boca Raton (over two years each); Toronto and Philadelphia (one year each); Kansas City (nine months and two return engagements); Denver (six months); San Diego (two engagements including Forbidden Christmas); a record-breaking run in 1994 at the Tiffany Theatre in Los Angeles; Sydney; Tokyo; and Singapore, among many others. In 1999, after a sellout engagement at London’s Jermyn Street Theatre, it transferred for the summer to the famed Albery Theatre in the West End. Forbidden Broadway’s return to the Tiffany Theatre in Los Angeles in the spring of 2000 garnered two more Ovation Awards. Mr. Alessandrini’s next spoof, Forbidden Hollywood, first appeared as a section of Forbidden Broadway in Boston in 1989. After several years of work on the project, the full length version previewed in San Diego, then opened in Los Angeles in March 1995. The run at the Coronet Theatre delighted audiences for nearly a year and was nominated for seven Ovation Awards. Whoopi Goldberg, Carol Channing, and many other luminaries of the “industry” showed up to see themselves and their friends lovingly parodied. The show was subsequently produced in Chicago (which garnered three Jefferson Award nominations), Kansas City (a record-breaking run), and Toronto. It was updated for New York and ran off-Broadway in 1996, and it has had numerous successful runs across America since that time. In the fall of 1996, the Forbidden crew, including John Freedson and Harriet Yellin (producers), Phill George (Associate Director), and of course, writer-director Gerard Alessandrini, turned their attention back to their
first love: Broadway. A new edition of the show, Forbidden Broadway Strikes Back! returned to New York and its original home on West 72nd (now called the Triad and expanded to 135 seats), where it once again delighted audiences with its fast-paced spoofs of current Broadway shows and stars. The return of FB was again greeted with raves from critics (The New York Times called it “triumphant”) and the show won the Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and Drama League awards. Bob Hope, Bea Arthur, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Savion Glover, George C. Wolfe, Elaine Paige, Rosie O’Donnell, Dame Maggie Smith and the casts of Lion King, Aida, and Rent are among the recent attendees. The show moved to the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre on 42nd Street with a brand new edition, Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey, which won the 2001 Drama Desk Award for Best Revue. Forbidden Broadway’s 20th Anniversary Edition was followed by Forbidden Broadway: SVU, which won yet another Drama Desk Award for Best Musical Revue in 2005. In 2006, the show was recognized with a Tony Honors Award for being an integral part of the theater community for more than 25 years. Most recently, after a three-year hiatus, a new edition, Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking opened in New York garnering rave reviews once again from almost every media outlet (this time, The New York Times called it “a godsend”). As long as there’s a Broadway, Forbidden Broadway will be there, poking, prodding, teasing, pleasing, jeering and cheering – but always with love.

Nutcracker: A Holiday Tradition
T
he Nutcracker ballet is the most popular in the world. The ballet, following the story of a young girl named Clara, has been adapted by hundreds of communities across the United States and Canada. Based on the book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” a dark story by E.T.A. Hoffman, the Nutcracker ballet hasn’t always been so popular. The first performance of the Nutcracker was in December of 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, conducted by Riccardo Drigo and choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Ivanov took over after Petipa became ill. Neither critics nor the audience liked it. The current popularity of the Nutcracker is due in part to Willam Christensen, former ballet master of the San Francisco Ballet. Christensen imported the Nutcracker to the United States in 1944. Next, George Balanchine decided to choreograph his own version for the New York City Ballet in 1954, and since then the Nutcracker has become a winter tradition in the United States. As dancers, North Carolina Dance
Theatre’s Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride performed in Balanchine’s Nutcracker hundreds of times. “Mr. Balanchine’s Nutcracker celebrates children and the magic of the holiday season,” said Bonnefoux. “I work to do the same in my version of the Nutcracker.” Many versions of the Nutcracker exist today. Hawaiians added the hula and Canadians added hockey. There is a version that’s set in the ’60s and even one performed on ice. With a jovial party scene, a majestic snow fall and a glittering Land of Sweets, Bonnefoux’s version for N.C. Dance Theatre is mostly traditional, incorporating whimsical elements and dynamic characters. The Charlotte Symphony provides live accompaniment. “We’re pleased to bring the time-honored holiday tradition of the Nutcracker to the Charlotte area year after year,” said Bonnefoux. “It’s the type of ballet that has something for everyone, and we invite families to celebrate the magic of the holidays with us this December.”
The snow scene is one of the most popular scenes in the Nutcracker.
