Beloved Dance Company Returns to Charlotte
elebrating over 60 years of unparalleled artistry, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its highly anticipated return to Belk Theater Feb. 25 and 26, presenting three thrilling dance programs as well as the soulstirring masterpiece, “Revelations.” Since its creation in 1960, “Revelations” has been seen by more audiences around the world than any other modern work, inspiring generations through its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring spirituals. Springing from Alvin Ailey's childhood memories of growing up in the south and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, “Revelations” pays homage to the rich African American cultural heritage and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition. In 1958, Ailey and a small group of dancers took the stage in New York Continued on Page 6

Two decades ago, The Cypress raised the bar for senior living. It’s still the highest. hen The Cypress of Charlotte opened 20 years ago, our goal was to create a retirement community that energized senior living, with no shortage of luxury. Today, The Cypress still sets the high bar for retiring well. It’s been two decades of meeting new friends and cherishing old ones, cultural enrichment, cuisine that’s among Charlotte’s best, and a stunning new sports and fitness center. But it’s the folks who live here, the members of our community, that keep The Cypress special after 20 years. Please, come see for yourself.

and forever changed American dance and culture. One of the country's groundbreaking greats, Ailey and his company inspire all in a universal celebration of the human spirit using the African American cultural experience
and the modern dance tradition. After six decades, Ailey continues to move forward under the leadership of Robert Battle, revealing time and again why Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the world's most beloved dance companies.
If you’ve never seen them perform, you have no idea what the human body can do, in terms of sheer grace, control, elegance, strength, and athleticism. – THE HUFFINGTON POST

hey were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard … and the radio just couldn’t get enough of. But while their harmonies were perfect onstage, off stage it was a very different story – a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the Tony and Grammy Award®-winning true-life musical phenomenon, Jersey Boys. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true. Just for fun, unscramble the names of each original member of the legendary music group and use the circled letters to compile the name of The Four Seasons’ first No. 1 hit.

CREATOR’S NOTE There’s something more than special when a show enjoys a continuous 37-year run (and counting) on television. From its inception, “The Golden Girls” stood out against other television programming. It was groundbreaking for women of a certain age with universal stories that touched us all. Each week could be slapstick, insulting or a retelling of old vaudevillian jokes; all the while being rooted in the essence of the characters and their lives played by four tremendously gifted actors. It pushed boundaries by talking about issues that affected everyone – aging, sex and all sorts of taboo subjects – but always presented in a skillful and meticulous manner among a group of exceptionally strong women and friends. There is no way to truly do justice to the four wonderful performers who played the characters on the show, especially with a show that is so ingrained in American and other cultures. However, puppets provide a

heightened sense of reality and encourage the imagination of the audience. Puppets also allow us to exaggerate the traits and nuances of the characters. You’ll see what I mean in the first episode – it’s not something that is physically possible on television! Our show is a parody, and while we want to bring laughs – lots of laughs – underneath it all, this show is the kind of show that brings people together. “The Golden Girls” embodies friendship and working through life’s problems together. But I digress ... (as Sophia would say). In true television-speak, this is now the second season of That Golden Girls Show! – A Puppet Parody, which contains three new episodes. The first season played a long way from the Rusty Anchor in Florida, opening instead off-Broadway, but it’s great that the girls now get to tour the country and share their cheesecake with everyone. — Jonathan Rockefeller

Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker: The Ultimate Family Date!
hether it’s been a tradition in your family for years or this is your first time attending, Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker, presented by Bank of America, is the perfect opportunity to bring your family together for a holiday event that everyone will love. With Tchaikovsky’s beautiful score that is recognized by people of all ages along with magical sets – including an indoor snowfall – Nutcracker is truly spectacular! Here are our top five tips for making the most of your family “date” to the theater this year: 1. Pick the right performance. We know the holidays are a busy time, especially for families, so Charlotte Ballet offers both evening and daytime performances to suit your lifestyle. This year, there’s even an afternoon “bonus” performance on Monday, Dec. 23, for parents who need an activity once the kids are out of school for winter break. 2. Build anticipation. A few weeks before the show, listen to the music when the whole family is together in the car or while preparing dinner. If you have young Photo by Jeff Cravotta
children, read them the story – it will be easier for them to follow along if they are familiar with the characters. 3. Play I spy. This is a fun activity for little ones who might get antsy in their seats before intermission. You can quietly ask them to count the number of candy canes they see or ask how many toys they can spot onstage. 4. Eat first. While there are snacks available at the theater, it’s best to plan a meal before the show. If nap time is still a thing in your house, be sure your performance time doesn’t overlap. 5. Bring home the memories. Stop by the boutique for Nutcracker memorabilia like ornaments and snow globes. You can even work this into your holiday tradition and look forward to adding something new to your collection each year. Charlotte Ballet also offers a sensoryfriendly performance to share the holiday magic in an environment that welcomes all to the ballet. You can find out more information on our website: charlotteballet .org/special-performances/sensory-friendly.

5 Exciting Holiday Experiences With Your Charlotte Symphony This Season
T
he holidays are just around the corner, which means the return of timehonored traditions and the making of new ones. From acrobatics above the orchestra to snow in the theater, here are five exciting experiences that you can have, only with your Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. 1. Snow in the Knight Theater You may already be familiar with the CSO’s annual Magic of Christmas, but did you know that it snows in the theater following the concert? Featuring a visit from Santa and singalongs to favorite holiday tunes, this longstanding Charlotte tradition combines this year with Carolina Voices’ The Singing Christmas Tree Dec. 13-21. 2. Acrobatics above the orchestra When the circus comes to town, they don’t mess around. Cirque de Noel on Dec. 28 at Belk Theater will include stunning aerial feats that will wow the whole family.
3. Dancing onstage with Symphony for New Year’s Eve The party has moved to Belk Theater this year to accommodate more room for the post-concert festivities. Swing into the New Year with style with Gershwin’s famous “Rhapsody in Blue,” followed by champagne, desserts, live music to dance to, and a countdown to midnight. 4. Hallelujah! Handel’s Messiah returns this year by popular demand. The CSO will perform this beautiful, dramatic work featuring the Hallelujah Chorus with the Charlotte Master Chorale and four soloists Dec. 6 and 7 at Knight Theater. 5. Watch Kevin get left Home Alone Part of the CSO’s Movie Series, the orchestra will perform the soundtrack to this delightful holiday classic live in sync with the film, projected on a large screen above the orchestra. Don’t miss it on Nov. 29 at Belk Theater.
