CELEBRATING 25 YEARS AND LOOKING AHEAD Dear Broadway Fans, Hamilton is the most exciting finale to our 25th Anniversary Season at Blumenthal Performing Arts that we could ever imagine. During this 25th Anniversary Season, we celebrate the big dream to create a performing arts center. We honor those who had the vision and courage to see what it might become. We look forward to the next 25 years and new ways we will strengthen and enliven our city. We are grateful to leaders like Hugh McColl, Deborah Harris, Bill Lee, Rolfe Neill, John Belk and Herman Blumenthal who envisioned a home for the arts in Charlotte to be enjoyed by each citizen. Their efforts were a catalyst for a remarkable transformation of our center city. Beyond transforming our city, they created a place that transforms people of all ages through inspiring performances and community events. Our founding leaders understood the importance of a place that brings us together. The task these leaders undertook over 25 years ago was exceptional. In fact, it took nearly 12 years, with many ups and downs, to bring the project to opening night. Thankfully they were determined and resilient. Looking ahead to new challenges and new projects to strengthen the community, there is reason to draw inspiration from all that these leaders accomplished that we enjoy today. During this anniversary season, we’ve dreamed about initiatives for the next 25 years. The Blumenthal board and staff are deeply committed to expanding the positive impact we have on the citizens of our region. The 25th Anniversary Season Committee was led by Amy Blumenthal. We are thankful for her leadership of a dedicated committee that is listed in this program. We particularly thank the signature event chairs. Susanne McGuire led our Gala Musical Tribute to costume designer William Ivey Long. Pat Rodgers, along with Laura and Jeff Hay, chaired the Celebration of

Blumenthal’s Resident Companies. Renee and Chris Hobart, as well as Shavonda and Reginald Bean, chaired the Hamilton Gala. During the 25th Anniversary Season, the number of Season Ticket holders reached a record high of nearly 18,000. There have been numerous sold-out shows, including Les Misérables, Diana Krall, Trevor Noah, Robert Earl Keen, Trey Anastasio, Waitress, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Tablao Flamenco, Something Rotten, The Temptations, Jon Batiste, Bruce Hornsby, The Color Purple, The Lion King and Reece Witherspoon. The kickoff of our season also marked the debut of a new logo for Blumenthal Performing Arts. The new design, through shape and color, expresses our inclusion of the rich variety of art forms and people who have found a welcoming home in our venues. Among the most satisfying moments of the season are those where talented students and local artists have been recognized. Reneé Rapp, the 2018 Blumey Awards Best Actress won Best Actress at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards on Broadway. Charlotte’s Slam Poetry team won the top prize at the National Slam Poetry Festival, the only team in the country to win that top award three times. For thousands of kids each year, a visit to one of our six venues is their first time to see a professional show. For many, it is an experience that will motivate and inspire them for years to come. Blumenthal Performing Arts has helped create paths to success for young people in Charlotte. Through a variety of programs, such as Junior Ambassadors, we inspire talented young people to be lifelong arts fans and supporters. An extensive scholarship program is helping students to pursue their educational and professional goals. The special initiatives and projects of the 25th Anniversary Season were made possible thanks to Barings, The Dale F. Halton Foundation, The Doctor Family Foundation and Wells Fargo. We are grateful for their generous support. Blumenthal Performing Arts in its first 25 years has played a pivotal role in creating the vibrant city we enjoy today. It has inspired a generation of Charlotte residents to dream big dreams. We’re determined to build on that legacy to strengthen our community and energize a vibrant cultural life for the next generation of Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer Offers More In-depth Arts Coverage By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

G

reat news, theater fans: The Charlotte Observer recently announced plans to increase arts coverage, thanks to a grant from the Thrive Campaign for the Arts. In September, the paper issued its biggest arts season preview section in the last 25 years. (You can find that online at charlotteobserver.com.) Expect more feature stories, photos and videos of local artists and performers this season, as well as expanded listings and reviews. Also, there will be more profiles of the folks behind the scenes and articles on how the arts impact our community every day. “We wanted to find ways to make our reporting bolder, more robust,” says the Observer’s features editor Helen Schwab, who will be overseeing an expanded and more diverse roster of journalists. They range from reporters who have covered the arts and culture beat for years – like Lawrence Toppman on theater, and Lia Newman and Grace Cote on visual arts – as well as new voices at the Observer, such as Emiene Wright and Vanessa Infanzon. Creating stories that engage multiple audiences is also a priority. “Interestingly, I think people tend to think of 'arts readers' as a block audience,” says Schwab. “But people who are passionate about visual arts are not necessarily passionate about classical music, and theater lovers don't all go to the ballet. Certainly there's overlap, but less than you might think. So we're writing for a lot of different readers. ... You hope to engage them. "We think strong, diverse storytelling about people can get the job done." Here’s how you can access this expanded arts content and engage with others online: • Sign up for the Observer’s weekly 32

e-newsletter, “Inside Charlotte Arts” at charlotteobserver.com/newsletters. • Join the Inside Charlotte Arts Facebook Group to see what’s new, easily scroll through recent content, ask questions and connect with other readers at facebook.com/groups/ insidecharlottearts. • Bookmark the Observer’s new page dedicated to local arts stories at charlotteobserver.com/entertainment/ arts-culture. “We’re thankful to see the increased coverage of the arts in Charlotte and are grateful to the Thrive Fund to make it so,” says Tom Gabbard, president and CEO of Blumenthal Performing Arts. “The Charlotte Observer is enhancing awareness, insight and understanding of the rich variety of arts events and artists here in Charlotte.” Do you have ideas about events or artists the paper should be covering? The Observer wants to hear from you. Send questions or suggestions to arts@charlotteobserver.com. 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

Become a Crowd Pleaser With Group Tickets

here’s nothing like an evening at the theater, enjoying the best of Broadway or experiencing one of your favorite artists live in the Queen City. But what if you were able to lead a group of friends on a feline foray with CATS? Perhaps you and your fellow book club members would like a one-night-only jam session with the Rock of Ages band. Or maybe you want to invite clients along for a magic carpet ride with Disney’s Aladdin. When you purchase seats through Group Sales, you welcome guests to experience the world of theater with you. Group tickets are currently available for the 2018-2019 season, including concerts, comedy, dance, all of the aforementioned Broadway lights shows and many more. Seeing a performance with a group is not only fun, it’s economical. For many events in Blumenthal venues, groups of 10 or more* receive discounted tickets, priority seating and the opportunity to be recognized on the screens in the lobby on the evening of the performance. Group outings can be a great way to entertain clients, motivate staff, spend time with family, and simply enjoy an evening or afternoon of unsurpassed entertainment with friends. When you

work with Group Sales to secure your tickets, you’re guaranteed an opportunity for the best seats before public on-sale, convenient ordering and personal service to help organize your outing. Visit BlumenthalArts.org/Groups to learn more and to sign up for the Group Sales email list.
