ith Hamilton anchoring the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s 25th anniversary season, Broadway fans will experience an extraordinary lineup in 2017-18, including nine new shows on the PNC Broadway Lights season plus the return of some blockbuster Broadway favorites. “We're celebrating our first 25 years by welcoming to Charlotte many of
the best musicals in the history of Broadway," said Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. “We are thrilled Hamilton will anchor our 25th anniversary year. Eight other new titles are on the PNC Broadway Lights season plus returns of perennial favorites. For the first time in the same season we will have the most recent winners of the Tony® Awards for best musical, best revival of a musical and best new play.”

Inspired Works – Celebrating Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux
W
ith a celebrated performance career, masterful choreographic works and visionary leadership of Charlotte Ballet, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux has made a lasting impact on the ballet world and the Charlotte community. The 2016/2017 Season is Bonnefoux’s final season as president and artistic director of Charlotte Ballet, a position he came to in 1996, just a few years after Charlotte Ballet (then North Carolina Dance Theatre) moved to Charlotte from Winston-Salem. WHO’S WHO in the CAST EUAN MORTON (Hedwig) originated the role of Boy George in the musical Taboo in London and New York. He was nominated for an Olivier and a Tony Award. In addition, he received a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Additional Broadway credits include Cyrano de Bergerac and Sondheim on Sondheim. He has numerous off-Broadway and regional credits, including a production of Measure for Pleasure at the Public Theatre that earned him an Obie Award, and Parade at the Ford’s Theatre as Leo, for which he won a Helen Hayes Award. A favorite recent collaboration was with Tony Kushner and Maurice Sendak on the new musical Brundibar. Euan also has an active concert career. Opera Carolina collaborates with New York and Two Italian opera companies on a great American Western
"I
nternational partnerships can present great business opportunities that raise the level of commerce in our region,” said James Meena, Opera Carolina’s general director & principal conductor. He’s not talking about exporting cars, but opera, and specifically about Opera Carolina’s April production of Puccini’s The Girl of the West. This innovative co-production is between Opera Carolina, the New York City Opera and five Italian theaters including Teatro di Giglio in Lucca, Italy (Puccini’s hometown); Teatro Lirico in Cagliari; and the theaters in Pisa, Livorno and Modena; that premiers in Charlotte April 23. “Charlotte’s leading corporations know that building relationships with other cities and countries is important to elevating Charlotte as an international city,” Meena continued. “We will have guests from around the world here in Charlotte for the opening of the new production, and the name of Opera Carolina and Charlotte will be in New York and across Italy in 2017 and 2018. This is a first for a Charlotte arts organization.” Set-building and costume design have been an international effort. The physical production was built in Opera Carolina’s Gastonia shop. Michael Baumgarten, Opera Carolina’s production director, and Stefanutti created digital projections in

Charlotte. Costumes were created by the renowned costume house Atelier Nicolao in Venice, Italy. After Puccini’s Western debuts in Charlotte, the production opens the New York City Opera season, followed by Teatro di Giglio Lucca, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and then to theaters in Pisa, Livorno and Modena, Italy. And Opera Carolina – and Charlotte, too – will have made new fans across the Atlantic. Minnie, Get Your Gun! Puccini’s hero in this Western is actually a heroine. Minnie is the tough, gun-toting saloon owner who saves the day. Don’t miss the Gold Rush-era romance, complete with good guys and outlaws, cowboys and Indians and bandits and bar fights.
