successful and useful. Mental illness interferes with people’s lives. So the ‘mad scientist,’ whatever eccentricities they may have…they’re still productive and maybe even well adjusted. Maybe they’re just odd.” Sure, creating a monster is a task most would consider “odd,” but YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN isn’t just a wickedly funny take on a mad scientist’s quest—with its zany characters and lively numbers such as “The Transylvania Mania” and “He Vas My Boyfriend,” it’s a monstrously good time. THE LEGENDARY FOUR TOPS

F

Ticket Info

ew things have remained the same since 1954, but you can bet that the soulful and satisfying harmonies of The Four Tops haven’t changed a bit. Charlotte Symphony conductor Albert-George Schram will team up with the chart-topping quartet March 18-19 at Ovens Auditorium for an evening of Motown musical memories. The Four Tops began their journey as a band of soulful Detroit-area high school students in 1954. Founders Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, and Lawrence Payton had their THE FOUR TOPS first impromptu performance at a friend’s birthday party – the rest is history. Looking to “aim for the top,” the group called themselves The Four Tops and scored a record deal with Chess Records in 1956. The Four Tops spent 10 years perfecting their vocal blend before landing their first hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving,” after switching to Motown Records. They celebrated their first number-one single in the spring of 1965 with “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” and blazed through the 1960s and 1970s with a streak of R&B hits including “Reach Out, I’ll Be There,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” and “Ain’t No Woman (Like the One I’ve Got).”

The Four Top’s smooth moves and timeless tunes brought the group success well after the peak of Motown. The quartet toured with the Temptations and released its final Top 40 hit, appropriately titled “Indestructible,” in 1988. Just a few short years later The Four Tops were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the group of friends continued to tour the United States, Europe, and Asia. While the group’s talent and professionalism have remained consistent throughout the deacdes, the performers have changed; the legendary Abdul “Duke” Fakir remains the last founding member of The Four Tops. Seasoned entertainer Theo Peoples, previously lead singer for the Temptations, joined the group in 1998 upon the death of Lawrence Payton, stepping in to fill the shoes of founding “Topper” Levi Stubbs as The Tops’ lead vocalist a couple of years later. Ronnie McNeir, a wellknown producer and musician, joined in 1999. Talented songwriter, pianist, and vocalist Lawrence Roquel Payton, Jr., son of original Four Tops member Payton, grew up in the Motown sound and joined The Tops in 2005. arth Fagan Dance is “unfailingly original” deemed the The New York Times, which also named the Company’s piece, Mudan 175/39, third of the Top Six Dance-Watching Moments of 2009. In 2010, to mark its 40th anniversary, Garth Fagan Dance premiered two works: Thanks Forty by Fagan and Hylozoic by his current dancer and muse Norwood Pennewell. The company also added two revivals to its repertoire: Passion Distanced and Woza. The “fearless” dancers are “able to sustain long adagio balances, to change direction in midair, to vary the dynamic of a turn, to stop on a dime,” wrote David Vaughan in Ballet Review. Fagan’s ever-evolving dance language draws on many sources: sense of weight in modern dance, torso-centered movement and energy of Afro-Caribbean, speed and precision of ballet, and the rule breaking experimentation of the post-moderns. Critics have called Garth Fagan “a true original,” “a genuine leader,” and “one of

the great reformers of modern dance.” Fagan is the founder and artistic director of the award-winning and internationally acclaimed company. “Originality has always been Mr. Fagan’s strong suit, not least in his transformation of recognizable idioms into a dance language that looks not only fresh but even idiosyncratic,” writes Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times. For his pathbreaking choreography for Walt Disney’s The Lion King, Fagan was awarded the prestigious 1998 Tony Award for Best Choreography. He also received the 1998 Drama Desk Award, 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award, 1998 Astaire Award, 2000 Laurence Olivier Award, 2001 Ovation Award, and the 2004 Helpmann Award for his work on the Broadway musical, which opened in fall 1997 to extraordinary critical praise. Fagan’s distinguished work in the theatre also includes the first fully staged production of the Duke Ellington street opera, Queenie Pie at the Kennedy Center in 1986 and the opening production of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare Marathon: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, (1988), set in Brazil and directed by A.J. Antoon.
