Meet the Lilac Fairy From Sleeping Beauty

A

t only 19, Charlotte Ballet’s Sarah Lapointe has packed many accolades into her short, yet remarkable dance career. Popcorn and Opera Opera Carolina and The Met help CMS students experience opera in movies

T

he next best thing to experiencing opera live and in person is seeing it live on the big screen. In 2006, the Metropolitan Opera launched The Met: Live in HD, a series of performance transmissions shown live, in high definition, in select movie theaters. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system has participated in the HD Live in Schools program for several years. Now, Opera Carolina is partnering with CMS and The Met to enhance the program. Partner schools receive preparatory workshops, in-school experiences and a live opera experience in Belk Theater at Opera Carolina’s Student Nights at the Opera, with tickets and transportation funded by Opera Carolina. The Met plans five high definition transmissions this year: • La traviata. • Don Giovanni. • Nabucco. • Eugene Onegin. • Rusalka, which draws source material from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Some students will see La traviata – the Met’s streaming version – next month, which they saw live with Opera Carolina in January. And Opera Carolina is helping

facilitate student discussions on the similarities and differences between the two productions. Not only are CMS students being exposed to opera at a young age (and in a format they’re likely familiar with), but they’re getting prepped in advance with indepth, active exploration. “We’re doing a lot of advance in-school support,” said Ashley Lam, Opera Carolina’s director of education. “And we’re customizing the content of the curriculum based on what each school tells us they need. “We want these lessons to permeate beyond the classroom,” she said. “We start with arts educators – music, band and orchestra leaders … but we’re developing ways those teachers can help other teachers incorporate arts into their classrooms.” Thanks to Opera Carolina, students this year are getting a big dose of art at school and at the movies. Pass the popcorn. CMS schools participating in HD Live in Schools: • Chantilly Montessori • Northwest School of the Arts • East Mecklenburg High • Cochrane Collegiate Academy • Independence High • Randolph Middle

WHO’S  WHO  IN  THE  CAST 2016. Fiasco has been in residence with Roundabout Theatre, Theatre For a New Audience, the Sundance Theatre Lab, New Victory Lab Works, NYU-Gallatin, Duke University, Marquette University, and LSU. Their work has been developed at SPACE on Ryder Farm, the Orchard Project and the Shakespeare Society, and they have led master classes at Brown University and NYU. Since 2008, Fiasco has annually offered the Free Training Initiative—a conservatory-level classical acting intensive for professional actors, completely free of charge to students. Legend has it the word “fiasco” was first used to describe commedia dell’arte performances that went horribly (and hilariously) wrong. While we hope to avoid on-stage disasters, we do believe that only when artists are brave enough to risk a fiasco can they create the possibility of something special. We chose the name Fiasco to remind ourselves to brave the huge leaps in the hopes of discovering huge rewards. www.fiascotheater.com McCARTER THEATRE CENTER. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Emily Mann and Managing Director Timothy J. Shields, McCarter Theatre Center is recognized as one of the nation’s premier theater companies. World premieres include Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (2013 Tony Award for Best Play) and Miss Witherspoon; Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brother/Sister Plays; Edward Albee’s Me, Myself & I; Emily Mann’s Having Our Say; Danai Gurira’s The Convert; and Regina Taylor’s Crowns. Other significant Broadway productions include Brian Friel’s Translations; Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics; and Electra, directed by David Leveaux. McCarter is supported by Princeton University, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and over 3,000 individuals, corporations and foundations. www.mccarter.org. THE DODGERS (Producer). We Inspire Community. Something special happens when we experience a performance in a group – quite different from seeing it alone. We FEEL it more intensely. Shared experiences also build understanding and empathy among the participants. Diverse communities need collective experience more than ever. We inspire community … through the arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts has been entertaining and inspiring our community since 1992.

Your gifts make inspiration possible. BLUMENTHAL PERFORMING ARTS
