Reduced Shakespeare Company Abridges Our Holiday Season

I

This time around, the three “wise guys” poke and prod Santa Claus, “The 12 Days of Christmas” and much more. Warning: “White Christmas” will never be the same for you again. Neither will “The Nutcracker.” The good news? You will learn “The Ultimate Christmas Carol.” No, really. It’s the last Christmas carol that you will ever need to learn. Broadway World says “The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged) will make your spirits bright, whether you joyfully embrace the upcoming season or get dragged into it kicking and screaming.” Call 704-372-1000 or go online to BlumenthalArts.org for tickets.

f you prefer to laugh off the turkey and get in the mood for the holidays, get your tickets now for Reduced Shakespeare Company’s The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged), playing at the Booth Playhouse Nov. 23-25. The quick-witted RSC (we like to abridge the name) serves up its take on the holidays, complete with tidings of dysfunctional family discomfort and vaudeville-esque joy. If you’ve seen RSC’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] or The Complete World of Sports (abridged), you know the crew delivers belly laughs, irreverence and astute observations.

Top and above, the Reduced Shakespeare Company delivers belly laughs in The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged).

Charlotte Symphony Celebrates the Holidays With Magic of Christmas and Messiah

T

hese days, holiday preparation seems to begin earlier and earlier. We just can’t help getting excited about the holiday season with all the opportunities to visit with family and friends, eat great food and experience wonderful music. When planning your cultural outings this November, make sure to keep the Charlotte Symphony on your list. This holiday season, the Charlotte Symphony will present two concerts that will warm the heart and nourish the soul. Join us for the annual productions of Magic of Christmas and Messiah at Belk Theater.

Magic of Christmas is a Charlotte holiday tradition.

Singers of Charlotte join forces to perform their annual production of Messiah for one night only. Scott Allan Jarrett, director of choruses and assistant conductor, will lead the musicians through Handel’s Messiah, which tells the story of Christianity in three parts. Notable passages include “For Unto Us a Child is Born” and the “Hallelujah Chorus.” As for the tradition of attending the annual production of Messiah, Jarrett said, “The music doesn’t change, but we do. Every year is different because of loss, new life, any number of things. It’s an extraordinary gift to reset one’s life by the annual performance of the Messiah.”

Magic of Christmas – Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m.; Nov. 30, 8 p.m.; Dec. 1, 2:30 and 8 p.m.; and Dec. 2, 2:30 p.m. Albert-George Schram, or just “George” as many concertgoers know him, returns to the podium to conduct an all new Magic of Christmas. Each year, the Charlotte Symphony presents a brand new show featuring the musicians of the Charlotte Symphony and its official chorus, the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. This year, the Charlotte Children’s Choir lends its angelic voices to the mix along with vocalist Tiffany Coburn. The concert will feature classic Christmas standards that will make you want to sing along! Don’t miss this Charlotte holiday tradition.

Give the Gift of Music Have a persnickety recipient on your Christmas list? Purchase a gift certificate to the Charlotte Symphony and give the gift of music. You can purchase a gift certificate for any amount for use on any concert, expiring one year after purchase.
