Mayer Brown is proud to join in celebrating the miracle of dance and the other performing arts that the Blumenthal brings us. It’s the magic that inspires us to support the arts in Charlotte and around the world.
“Think of the magic of
the foot,
comparatively small,
upon which
your whole
weight rests . . .
dance is
a celebration
of that miracle.”

New Play Directed by Tim Robbins Follows Stories of 12 Immigrants By Liz Rothaus Bertrand
A
ground-breaking new play, The New Colossus, brings together the real-life tales of 12 immigrants from around the world, fleeing oppression and seeking a new life in the United States. Told in 12 languages, their stories also span 12 eras from the 1860s Tim Robbins to current day. The New Colossus comes to Knight Theater Jan. 28-Feb. 2, direct from Los Angeles, where it debuted last year. Charlotte will be the first city on a limited national tour to welcome this innovative production from The Actors’ Gang and director Tim Robbins. “It focuses on people who came looking for safety and freedom – it’s more timely than ever,” says Tom Gabbard, Blumenthal’s president and CEO. The stories the performers share were developed by the original cast and inspired by their own ancestors’ experiences. All 12 actors are expected to reprise their roles for the tour. A highly physical production, the show also uses poetry and music to tell the powerful stories of these refugees. Following each performance, the actors will host a talk-back, inviting audiences to share immigration stories from their own families. Robbins, a well-known actor, writer and director, has served as the artistic director of The Actors’ Gang since the early 1980s. As The New Colossus gears up for its national tour, he will be in Charlotte overseeing production rehearsals.
The show’s title comes from the sonnet, “The New Colossus,” written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 as part of a fundraising effort to build a pedestal for The Statue of Liberty. It helped transform the statue into a symbol for freedom and a beacon of hope for new immigrants. Later, a plaque engraved with the poem was placed inside the pedestal. Its most famous lines read: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Life on the farm is simple and normal – just the way all the animals like it. When a new bunch of ducklings hatch, everyone is excited to meet the newest, normal-est farm members, until they see that one duckling is a bit odd. Each member of the farm is put to the test when a big, bad, hungry villain tries to huff and puff and stuff himself silly, resulting in an important lesson learned: our differences are what make us special.

has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award. Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre (with co-author Rick Elice), won four Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second theatrical venture (also with Rick), ran over 700 performances on Broadway and had national and international tours. Upcoming projects include musicals about Roy Rogers and the Woodstock Festival of 1969. RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with the great Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick), won five (more than any play of the season), and is one of the most produced plays in North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), which also had productions on tour across North America and in Europe and South America. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership...on a handshake.
Summer, Doctor Zhivago, Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, Aaron Sorkin’s The Farnsworth Invention, Jersey Boys (Tony and Olivier Awards: Best Musical), Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays (Tony Award: Best Special Theatrical Event), Dracula the Musical, How to Succeed…, The Who’s Tommy (Tony and Olivier Awards: Best Director), A Walk in the Woods, Big River (Tony Awards: Best Director, Best Musical). Opera: Faust (The Met, ENO). TV: 700 Sundays (HBO). Film: Cousin Bette (with Jessica Lange, director), The Iron Giant (producer, BAFTA Award) and Quills (executive producer). In 2011, he was honored with a doctorate from Ryerson University where he attended theatre school. In 2012, he was awarded Canada’s Governor General’s National Arts Center Award and the Order of Canada.
BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writerproducers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957, they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By”. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)...David Ritz

A New Sleeping Beauty for 2020
C
harlotte Ballet is excited to present Sleeping Beauty: A Fairy-Tailored Classic for the first time to audiences next March. Make this brand new “fairy-tailored” production by British choreographer Matthew Hart your new family tradition! Staying true to the choreography of Marius Petipa, the “father of classical ballet,” Matthew Hart’s adaptation aims to “introduce children and their families to their first ballet experience,” the choreographer explained. The show brings to life this classic fairy-tale ballet with all the finery of glittering tutus, tiaras and satin ballet slippers set to Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous music. To give families a unique ballet experience, the dancing will be accompanied by an onstage narrator to help younger audiences follow the story. Tickets start at just $25.

Celebrating Beethoven at 250
hroughout the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, your Charlotte Symphony will celebrate the life and work of one of classical music’s greatest composers: Ludwig van Beethoven. Discover these beloved and masterful works coming soon this spring: 1. “Emperor” Majestic, striding and tender, the “Emperor” Concerto is not only a crowning achievement among Beethoven's compositions, but among all the piano concertos written before or since. Led by Maestro Christopher Warren-Green, pianist Conrad Tao plays the concerto with your CSO Jan. 10-12 at Knight Theater. 2. “My Little Symphony in F” Cheerfully lighthearted, Symphony No. 8 was described by the composer as “my little Symphony in F.” Maestro Warren-Green conducts this delightful work as part of CSO’s Valentine’s Day weekend concert Feb. 14-16 at Knight Theater.
3. “Missa Solemnis” Monumental and deeply affecting, “Missa Solemnis” ranges from moments of calmness and purity to thundering passages, operatic intensity and warlike trumpets and drums. The program is led by Maestro Warren-Green with the Charlotte Master Chorale and four soloists March 6 and 7 at Belk Theater. 4. “Pastoral” Evoking his love of living in nature, Beethoven's “Pastoral” brings life to rolling thunder and the calling of a shepherd's pipes – a depiction you may recall from Disney’s Fantasia. Guest conductor Joann Falletta leads your CSO through this popular work April 3-5 at Knight Theater. 5. Symphony No. 4 The Classical Series closes with a bravo for Beethoven, as Warren-Green leads the orchestra in the vivacious Symphony No. 4 along with Brahms’ Double Concerto May 1 and 2 at Belk Theater.

Two decades ago, The Cypress raised the bar for senior living. It’s still the highest. hen The Cypress of Charlotte opened 20 years ago, our goal was to create a retirement community that energized senior living, with no shortage of luxury. Today, The Cypress still sets the high bar for retiring well. It’s been two decades of meeting new friends and cherishing old ones, cultural enrichment, cuisine that’s among Charlotte’s best, and a stunning new sports and fitness center. But it’s the folks who live here, the members of our community, that keep The Cypress special after 20 years. Please, come see for yourself.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
