Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of the longest running show on Broadway, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, is one of them. This captivating version of a classic story is receiving critical acclaim and will soon come to our stage in Belk Theater. “We’re proud to welcome this spectacular new production of The Phantom of the Opera,”
said Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard. “One of Broadway’s most romantic musicals is given a fresh, new look with extraordinary special effects you won’t want to miss.” The record-breaking smash hit Motown the Musical, which held National tour auditions right here in the Queen City last fall, is the second multiweek show included next season. n February, the Knight Foundation announced a $1.1 million gift to help North Carolina Dance Theatre expand its repertoire, furthering its mission to provide innovative programming that enriches, educates and challenges Charlotte. The grant provides for new, contemporary works, much like Dwight Rhoden’s Othello and Jiri Kylian’s Forgotten Land, being performed April 24-26 at Knight Theater. “The grant from the Knight Foundation allows us to continue doing works by renowned choreographers like Dwight and Jiri,” said Dance Theatre President & Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “Great choreographers attract great dancers, and great dancers want to broaden their experience by performing works by choreographers who challenge them.” The Knight Foundation recognized the importance of the dancers and awarded $100,000 to increase the dancers’ weeks of employment. Generating additional weeks of work for the dancers ensures that North Carolina Dance Theatre remains competitive in its attraction and retention of high-quality,
diverse dance talent. “I chose to dance for North Carolina Dance Theatre because of the strong artistic leadership and the opportunity to grow professionally through powerful and challenging choreography,” said dancer Jamie Dee Clifton. “The Knight Foundation’s gift reaffirms my belief that Dance Theatre will continue to be a company where I can grow as a dancer – both because I’ll be pushed in new, contemporary ballets and because of the commitment to increase dancer work weeks. It’s an incredible feeling knowing we as artists are valued and supported by the community where we perform.” Your next chance to see Jamie and the rest of N.C. Dance Theatre is at Othello, April 24-26, at Knight Theater. Othello is a sizzling, modern take on the Shakespeare masterpiece. Rhoden, the choreographer, worked with composer David Rozenblatt to create original music for the ballet, which has a musical theater flair. The evening opens with Kylian’s somber and soulful Forgotten Land, which marks the first time Dance Theatre has performed a Kylian work.

Queen R ockers T alk About We Will Rock You
rom London’s West End comes We Will Rock You, the worldwide smash hit musical by legendary British rock group Queen and Ben Elton. It is in Belk Theater for a limited engagement May 27-June 1. We Will Rock You is set in a future age of mindless manufactured music and unoriginality, where an unlikely resistance – an alliance of rebel Bohemians – waits for a hero to bring the power of rock back to the people. It boasts a fantastic score of killer Queen tunes such as “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are the Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and of course, “We Will Rock You.” Following are excerpts from an interview with musical supervisors for the show, Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
that well to the genre of musical theater. … So, we kind of acquainted ourselves with the rules and we gathered together a team around us, which was partly built from rock ’n’ roll people and partly from theatrical people; it became this great kind of mélange. A little uncomfortable at first, but from that came the strength to create something new. So, we called it a rock theatrical. It's something which is very rock ’n’roll, very organic, but at the same time has the values of the musical theater, which is that you encapsulate the whole story. INTERVIEWER: How did you take these great songs, which are theatrical in and of themselves, and put it in to this context? I understand that you worked closely with Ben? MAY: Yeah, Ben Elton is the key. We work shopped a couple of ideas and we didn't like it. We felt uncomfortable because it was autobiographical and we didn't really feel comfortable with portraying our lives and Freddie's – it just didn't seem to sit well. Along came Ben Elton, who's an incredibly successful writer in England. Ben came up with this idea. He said OK, “this musical is not about the past, it's not about history, it's about the future, it's about the future of kids and how they feel and how they want to express themselves and how they're looking for that thing which is rock ’n’ roll. And that's the quest of the whole thing.” … A lot of Queen stuff is about finding yourself, finding freedom, breaking away from where you are, breaking into the world. You know “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions,” “I Want to Break Free.” It's kind of all there.
INTERVIEWER: I’m just curious. How did this idea come about? I understand Robert De Niro might’ve been the first person to mention it. T AY LOR : I think he was involved very early on in the idea of a musical. ... Brian and myself and our manager, Jim (Beach), had thought for years that it would be an interesting thing to do; just another way to get our music to people. And we went through a lot of scripts, and we decided in the end that we needed to make it more of a mixed comedy with the music. INTERVIEWER: Brian, I understand you were the person who referred to We Will Rock You as a rock theatrical. MAY: Well, it is a musical, but we came into it as a body of people who really didn't relate The cast of the national tour of We Will Rock You.

Kenny Loggins
enny Loggins’ remarkable four-decade-plus career has brought him from the top of the charts to the toast of the Grammys. He’s had smash hits on Hollywood’s favorite soundtracks, rocked worldwide stages and found his way into children’s hearts while bringing his soulful, beautiful voice to platinum albums in a stunning variety of genres. His gift for crafting deeply emotional music is unparalleled, and it’s been a part of his life as long as he can remember. When Loggins was 7 years old, he watched his two older brothers struggle to write a song, “and I remember thinking, it just can’t be that hard,” he laughs. About a year later, inspired by the film Yankee Doodle Dandy, he realized songwriting was his future. “It’s a moment that sticks with you,” he says. “I knew deep inside that this is something I could do.” Once he started doing it, he never stopped. Loggins, who was born in Everett, Washington, and moved to the Los Angeles area as a young child, began singing and playing guitar in high school, and scored a job as a songwriter for ABC/Wingate out of college for $100 a week after a brief, unlikely stint as a guitarist for psychrock band the Electric Prunes. “I went in and sang a bunch of my songs I’d already written, and they signed me right there,” he recalls. One of the first tunes he offered up was the beloved “House at Pooh Corner,” which became one of several Loggins-penned hits that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded for
1970’s “Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy.” “I wrote it during finals as a senior in high school,” he says. “We were coming on graduation, and it reminded me of the last chapter of the book “House at Pooh Corner,” where Christopher Robin is about to head out and leave Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood behind. Ironically, I guess I never did.” Halfway through his three-year gig as a Wingate staffer, Loggins met the man who would help shape the early part of his career: Jim Messina. “I knew that Jimmy had worked with Buffalo Springfield, and that was one of my favorite acts of the ’60s,” Loggins says of the producer and onetime Poco member. The two started to work on Loggins’ solo debut with Messina behind the glass, and Loggins fell in love with a track his producer had penned called “Peace of Mind.” Before he knew it, the pair of creative partners had morphed into a duo, and Loggins and Messina was born. Their first album, “Kenny Loggins With Jim Messina Sittin’ In,” came out in 1971, featuring Loggins’ own version of “Pooh Corner” and the beautiful ballad “Danny’s Song,” which he’d written when his brother’s wife gave birth to the couple’s first child. “That was the beginning of his family,” Loggins remembers, “and many of those lyrics were taken right from a letter he wrote me.” The prolific recording and touring duo released a studio album every year from 1971 to 1976, wrapping with “Native Sons.” The time had come for Loggins to cast off on his own. “When I recorded ‘Celebrate Me
17A
Kenny Loggins
Home,’ I was very excited; I was like an arrow pulled back in a bow. I’d waited seven years to finally make my solo album,” Loggins says. His 1977 Phil Ramone-produced solo debut went platinum and included “I Believe in Love,” the song he’d written for Barbra Streisand to perform in the film A Star Is Born. The album came out just in time for Loggins to score a gig opening for Fleetwood Mac on the “Rumours” tour, and he went from playing large rooms to arenas overnight. He struck up a friendship with Stevie Nicks, who generously offered to sing one of his songs. Loggins wrote the perfect tune with his friend, Melissa Manchester – “Whenever I Call You Friend” from his 1978 album “Nightwatch” — which he credits as “the moment that launched my solo career.” The hits just kept on coming. Loggins pulled up for a songwriting session at Michael McDonald’s house and heard the opening melody of “What a Fool Believes” coming out of the door. “He stopped playing after eight bars, but my imagination kept going,” Loggins says. “So I like to say we were writing together before we met.” The pair won a best song Grammy for the tune in 1979. The following year, the pair picked up a second Grammy for “This Is It,” off Loggins’ third consecutive platinum solo album, “Keep the Fire.” As the decade progressed, Loggins kept expanding his musical range, impressively exploring new textures of jazz, rock and pop with ambitious production. In the 1980s, Loggins also earned a new title: king of the movie
soundtrack. Film producer Jon Peters called him in to see a rough cut of Caddyshack, and Loggins provided the cult classic’s smash “I’m Alright.” When a pal asked Loggins to write a few songs for an as-yetunmade picture called Footloose, he whipped up a No. 1 blockbuster. “I had a little up-tempo thing I’d been messing with that I probably wouldn’t have written if it hadn’t have been for the movie,” Loggins says. He scored a track on Tom Cruise’s Top Gun (“Playing With the Boys”) and performed that movie’s indelible hit “Danger Zone.” While Loggins continued to record albums that were deeply personal and introspective – from 1985’s “Vox Humana” to 1988’s “Back to Avalon” – he also began looking outward, contributing to 1985’s landmark charity single “We Are the World.” “I was fortunate that Michael Jackson and I had become friends, so he invited me join in,” Loggins says. “It was a long night, but there was this very rare sense of community in the room. We all knew what we were there to do.” Several years later, Loggins – a deeply committed environmentalist with a long history of advocating for the planet and green parenting – wrote a passionate plea for change called “Conviction of the Heart” that appeared on his 1991 album “Leap of Faith.” The song was so powerful, it caught the ear of Al Gore, who later called it the “unofficial anthem of the environmental movement.” After a stunning run of solo albums, a Christmas album, and two LPs for children (“Return to Pooh
17B
Kenny Loggins
Corner” and “More Songs From Pooh Corner”), Loggins reunited with his former partner Messina for the Sittin’ In Again Tour in 2005 (the duo toured again in 2009). Playing live has always been – and remains – a key part of Loggins’ life. “It’s an experience I don’t have anywhere else. It is time-travel,” he explains. “I make a connection with the audience that is special to me and unique in my life.” Since 2010, Loggins has also been onstage with the country trio Blue Sky Riders, which he started with Nashville powerhouse Gary Burr and gifted vocalist and singer/songwriter Georgia Middleman. “When Gary and I sang together, we sounded like brothers. The last time I experienced that kind of blend was with Jimmy Messina in 1971,” Loggins says. They had such a great time writing and recording, Loggins proposed that they start a band. “Then we laughed about it and went about our way.” But after a few months, Loggins called him back and
suggested they find a female voice to form a trio. “I knew the songwriting would be the key for this band, so she had to be strong in both singing and writing.” The group released its debut album, “Finally Home,” on its own record label, 3Dream Records, in January 2013 and then hit the road. “It’s very much a throwback to the country-rock of my youth, but with the exception of ‘Footloose,’ it rocks harder than most of the stuff I’ve done over the years,” Loggins says. Though he’s got 12 platinum albums, a pair of Grammys, and hits on almost all the Billboard charts under his belt, Loggins is far from done. With more Blue Sky Riders tunes and a children’s book in the works, he’s still looking forward to what’s next. “I feel very lucky that this is the way I make my living, and not a lot of people can say that,” Loggins says. “I’ve been lucky that I love what I do and I get to keep doing it.”

Club Helps Teachers Stay Connected to the Arts
I
f you are a teacher with a passion for performing arts and looking for a fabulous social club, look no further! Teachers Lounge is an informal Affini y Group for teachers in public and private schools, and in all grade levels, in the greater Charlotte area who enjoy making friends and attending great shows at Blumenthal Performing Arts. Members enjoy free pre-show parties, often dinner parties at or within walking distance of Blumenthal theaters, plus discounts on show tickets. Jill Hendrix, a teacher in Gaston County, joined during the 2012-13 season and has since recruited three of her friends. For Hendrix, it has been a wonderful way to stay connected to performing arts in Charlotte. “There are so few perks nowadays for those of us in the teaching profession, so Teachers Lounge is a huge treat!” she said. “The Teachers Lounge (Season Ticket) price is very Hendrix reasonable. The pre-show receptions are icing on the cake. I love that part of it! It is so relaxing and enjoyable. I have met a lot of people from other schools and have enjoyed seeing them month after month. It is easy to nurture these new friendships because of our mutual love of the arts.” There are no dues, no offi ers and no membership requirements. To join, or for information, go online to Hendrix, left, and a friend enjoy Potted Potter at BlumenthalArts.org/TeachersLounge. McGlohon Theater.

Symphony G uild of Charlotte: Volunteers Supporting T oday’s Symphony and T omorrow’s Musicians
T
wo hundred members strong, the women and men of the Symphony Guild of Charlotte foster an interest in symphonic music and provide financial and volunteer support to the Charlotte Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras (CSYO) and symphonic education. Founded in 1950, the Symphony Guild has contributed nearly $6 million to the Symphony and youth music programs over the years. The Symphony Guild is instrumental throughout the lives of young musicians by: • Introducing children to orchestral instruments through the hands-on Musical Petting Zoo. • Assisting at Lollipops Family Concerts and CSYO auditions. • Providing scholarships and grants for tuition, private instruction and summer study. • Funding the CSYO summer camp. • Hosting Young Artists Competition, a master class and Youth Festival. Now in its 27th year, the annual Youth Festival features the winners of the Young Artists competition and the Symphony’s youth orchestras in an outstanding showcase of classical music. For the grand finale, generations unite when the Charlotte Symphony plays side-by-side with the CSYO, a cultural rite of passage for the young musicians. Lisa Phillips, a Symphony Guild member since 1993, said, “The Guild seemed like a good fit because I was new to the community and am a life-long symphony fan.” The Youth Festival and stories like the following inspire Lisa and other members' commitment to the Guild: A CSYO oboist told Lisa that he first held an oboe as a young child while visiting the Musical Petting Zoo almost 10 years before. That experience sparked something in him, and from there he worked to earn a seat among the talented CSYO musicians

Lisa Phillips volunteers for the Guild’s Musical Petting Zoo before a Charlotte Symphony L ollipops concert
and volunteered at the Zoo himself. The Symphony Guild is honored to help many young musicians come through the CSYO system, go on to top summer programs and conservatories, and even make a big impact on the music scene across the country. One stellar alumnus is Ben Smolen, who now holds the prestigious position of principal flute in the Pacific Symphony. Ben joined the Junior CSYO in sixth grade and the CSYO in eighth grade, and he remained a member until he graduated high school in 2003. He taught the Guild-sponsored Master Class for the youth orchestras this year, thrilled to share his knowledge with the next generation. “My experience in the Symphony’s youth orchestras was pivotal,” he said. “Not only did it provide a forum to hone my techniques, expand my musicality, but also I got to express myself through music with friends that I keep to this day. Young musicians in Charlotte are incredibly lucky to have such a loyal advocate like the Guild!”
