Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Looking into the heart of the latest production

D

theater critic Frank Rich called Beauty and the Beast the best musical of the year – in any format. Disney took the cue, and soon started things rolling for the live adaptation. Several new songs, as well as the book by Linda Woolverton, were written for the stage version, which opened on Broadway at the Palace Theater on April 18, 1994, and went on to become the ninth-longest running production in Broadway history. Audiences will delight in the eyepopping storybook shapes and colors that scenic designer Stan Meyer and the other original-version designers (Ann Hould-Ward, costumes; and Natasha Katz, lighting) have reimagined. The production’s look, says Meyer, “is more evocative of whimsy and very, very romantic.” Don’t miss Disney’s Beauty and the Beast when it returns to Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Sept. 29-Oct. 4. Tickets are available at BlumenthalArts.org or by phone at 704372-1000.

isney’s Beauty and the Beast, which has embarked on a lavish and visually reimagined tour, is one of best-loved of all musicals. It’s easy to understand why. Its classic story of a beautiful village girl, Belle, who is fi st repelled by, then attracted to a gruff yet big-hearted Beast, is indeed, as one of the show’s numbers has it, “a tale as old as time.” The songs – with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice – are almost criminally tuneful. And the musical’s appeal crosses age barriers: truly, “Beauty” is an experience that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Many of the songs were written for the 1991 animated movie: the charming “Belle,” the infectious “Something There,” and the spectacular hospitality anthem “Be Our Guest.” The movie was the fi st – and until 2010, the only – animated film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The movie’s status, not just in cinematic history but in critical lore, was cemented when the New York Times’ then-

Get Ready, ’Cause Here We Come Motown The Musical tells the story behind the music that shattered barriers

I

came about when I couldn't get my songwriter's royalties from a New York publisher. Protecting my songs was also the reason I got into publishing and eventually the record business.”

t began as one man's story, became everyone's music, and is now Broadway's musical. Motown The Musical, part of the PNC Broadway Lights, is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Here’s what Gordy had to say about his story.

On reaching white audiences “We released some of our early albums without showing the artists’ faces on them. The Marvelettes’ album 'Please Mr. Postman' had a picture of a mailbox on it; 'Bye Bye Baby' by Mary Wells, a love letter. We put a cartoon of an ape on the cover of the Miracles’ 'Doin’ Mickey’s Monkey,' and an Isley Brothers album had two white lovers at the beach on its cover. “This practice became less necessary as our music’s popularity started overcoming the prejudices.”

On Motown’s rise to the top “I am often asked, ‘How did you do it? How did you make it work at a time when so many barriers existed for black people and black music?’ There are many answers to those questions, but at the base of them is atmosphere. Hitsville had an atmosphere that allowed people to experiment creatively and gave them the courage not to be afraid to make mistakes. In fact, I sometimes encouraged mistakes. Everything starts as an idea, and as far as I was concerned, there were no stupid ones.”

Visit BlumenthalArts.org for tickets. Motown The Musical plays Belk Theater for two weeks only, Aug. 25- Sept. 6.

From songwriter to publisher and producer “Songwriting was my love, and protecting that love, in many ways, was the motivation for everything I did in the early years of my career. Producing the artists who sang my songs was the next logical step to making sure my songs were done the way I wanted. Publishing

nightSounds is the Charlotte Symphony’s innovative and imaginative concert series featuring approachable classical repertoire, multimedia components, special guests, and pre- and post-concert activities. Join the Symphony for its next KnightSounds concert, A Night in New York, Friday, April 17 — Saturday, April 18, at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts.

It’s your chance to hear celebrated pianist Phillip Bush, who grew up in Charlotte, play “Rhapsody in Blue.”

A free outdoor “plazacast” will take place on the Levine Center for the Arts campus during the concert. If Friday doesn’t suit your schedule, there’s a repeat performance on Saturday night.

Top 10 reasons to go to A Night in New York:

Guest dancers from Charlotte Ballet will join the Symphony on stage for selections from On the Town.

1 2 3

Tickets are just $29 and include a free drink that you can bring inside the theater! Cheers to that!

You’ll be transported to The Big Apple, minus the cost of hotel and airfare.

Classics from New York legends Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin will leave you humming.

The KnightSounds concert series is made possible through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Catch close-ups of the conductor’s baton, violin bows and other action with in-theater screens displaying various angles from stage, just like at a rock concert.
