American Idiot to Rock the Belk Theater Stage
A
s the curtain raises for American Idiot, the actor sings, “I don’t want to be an American idiot.” A punk rock-esque guitar riff follows, and the audience’s journey into a post-9/11 world begins with boulevards of broken dreams and characters such as “Jesus of Suburbia” and “WhatsHerName.” Based on Green Day's Grammy Awardwinning multiplatinum album, American Idiot boldly and brashly takes the Broadway musical where it has never gone before. “American Idiot jolts you right back to the dizzying roller coaster of young adulthood, that turbulent time when ecstasy and misery almost seem interchangeable states, flip sides of the coin of exaltation,” said reviewer Charles Isherwood in The New York Times. “It captures with a piercing intensity that moment in life when everything seems possible, and nothing seems worth doing, or maybe it’s the other way around.” Featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken
Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, American Idiot showcases the music of Green Day and the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. Critics often compare the 2010 show to Hair or Rent. American Idiot more closely resembles a pop punk opera than a jukebox musical. The songs might be quite familiar to those in their 30s and 40s. The characters’ angst echoes that of the teens in Spring Awakening. No surprise, as Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer directed both shows. Mayer and Green Day’s Armstrong wrote American Idiot’s book. The production was nominated for three Tony Awards – including best musical – and won two: best scenic design of a musical, for Christine Jones; and best lighting design of a musical, for Kevin Adams. The show received a Grammy Award for best musical show album in February 2011.

Escape to an Exotic Island Village With Opera Carolina’s The Pearl Fishers Metropolitan Opera Soprano Janinah Burnett stars in Bizet’s sumptuous tale of forbidden love, rivalry and sacrifice
J
oin Opera Carolina for a mesmerizing evening of alluring romance and betrayal in a rarely performed, but oftenrequested production of Georges Bizet’s sumptuously elegant opera The Pearl Fishers. Bizet’s gloriously seductive musical score casts its spell as the dangerous trappings of a classic love triangle unfold in a tropical pearl-fishing village in Ancient Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). One of the most famous French composers of the Romantic period, Bizet found his first critical success with this musical treasure, one that is no less engaging than his powerhouse favorite, Carmen. The Pearl Fishers is revered for its lush melodies, haunting arias and the famous Pearl Fishers duet, “Au fond du temple saint.” Opera Carolina’s production of The Pearl Fishers premiered in 2005 to widespread acclaim. “We have significantly enhanced our upcoming production, using advanced technology not available in 2005,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. “Our digital projections will reinvent this veritable masterpiece, providing a creatively engaging visual treat. Our new approach ideally fits the 2013 Ulysses Festival theme: Art and Technology.” Metropolitan opera star Janinah Burnett stars as Leila, the mysterious veiled priestess who sets a course of yearning, sacrifice, destruction and forgiveness that will change the island and its inhabitants forever. Burnett was named Artist of the Year in 2011 at Syracuse Opera for her performance as Leila in The Pearl Fishers, of which Syracuse.com said,
The Pearl Fishers, Opera Carolina 2005.
“Burnett is ideally cast; she moves gracefully, acts consistently well, and sings with agility and strength even on Bizet’s demanding vocal leaps.” As Mimì in Baz Luhrman’s adaptation of Puccini’s La Bohème, Burnett received tremendous acclaim, winning the Ovation Award with a record 82 consecutive soldout shows. Burnett is joined by tenor Chad Johnson as Nadir and baritone Mark Walters as Zurga. The Pearl Fishers performs over two weekends on April 13, 18 and 21 at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. A 25 percent discount is available for season ticket holders, plus there is a 50 percent youth discount, $10 Student Rush tickets and various group discounts. true reflection of Tiempo Libre's musical influences and upbringing. Described as “A landmark recording” by The Latin Jazz Network, the album uses Bach as a starting point from which to explore a wide range of Cuban music forms.
he Charlotte Symphony has invited the internationally acclaimed Cuban music group Tiempo Libre to share the stage for a medley of traditional chacha-chás and sones, as well as selections from Tiempo Libre's two Sony Masterworks releases, “My Secret Radio” and Grammynominated “Bach in Havana,” which uniquely fuses traditional Cuban music with classical Bach. Jacomo Rafael Tiempo Libre. Bairos will conduct the incendiary performances.
'My Secret Radio' When the members of Tiempo Libre were growing up, the Cuban government forbade its citizens to listen to American radio. Photo by Daniel Azoulay But, as it is with kids everywhere, that which was forbidden was what they most desired. The Cuban teenagers fashioned antennas out of salvaged aluminum foil and clothes hangers and climbed up on their rooftops at night to tune into the music that pulsated from Miami airwaves. Tiempo Libre’s latest album, “My Secret Radio,” recalls the thrill of their secret rooftop radio sessions and expresses the difficulties they later faced having to start from scratch in America.
Musical Heritage Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, Tiempo Libre’s seven members are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of native Cuban music. As immigrants, they ask themselves, "Who am I?" in the song, "Arroz con Mango." And the joyful response is: “No matter where I am, I am Cuban by birth, I am the rhythm I carry inside me.” However, while Tiempo Libre's Cuban timba sound honors the heritage of its members, it also incorporates their international and American musical experiences – funk, hiphop, rap, jazz, pop and classical. Tiempo Libre’s members led double lives, studying classical music at Cuba’s premier Russianstyle conservatories by day and playing timba, Latin jazz, rumba and tambore by night.

Synopsis ACT ONE PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris. 1832, PARIS Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognise Valjean until he has gone.
The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically-minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country.
ACT TWO
The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The next day the rebels are all killed. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists he must go away. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s ‘father’ is a murderer and as proof produces a ring which he stole from the corpse the night the barricade fell. It is Marius’s own ring and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies.

One to Watch
orth Carolina Dance Theatre’s Pete Walker, starring as Peter Pan this spring, was named to Dance Magazine’s prestigious “25 to Watch” list. Released annually, the list includes leading young dancers, choreographers and companies from around the world. “We are extremely proud of Pete for this great honor,” said N.C. Dance Theatre President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “His journey as a dancer has just started, and we are thrilled to be a part of this exciting moment in his career.” Last year, Walker received a Princess Grace Dance Fellowship, joining the ranks of other extremely gifted and promising artists in the
areas of theater, dance, choreography and film. Walker began his dance training in his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. During his sophomore year of high school, he was accepted into Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts on a full scholarship. Walker credits his family, especially his mother, for igniting his passion to become a professional dancer. In 2010, Walker joined North Carolina Dance Theatre 2 and was quickly promoted to the first company. In his “25 to Watch” listing, writer Steve Sucato wrote, “Walker has a physique á la Desmond Richardson, a technical purity reminiscent of Fernando Bujones, and a wide-ranging arsenal of acting and movement skills.”
