A Special Message From Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard
M
ecklenburg County residents have a unique opportunity on Nov. 5 to do something transformational for our community. The Parks/Arts/ Education Referendum will activate a sales tax to improve the lives of each resident, and particularly our kids. It will make a difference today and for generations to come. Blumenthal Performing Arts enthusiastically recommends a YES vote Nov. 5 in favor of improving Parks, Arts and Education for Everyone. While our community has achieved so much, big gaps remain in providing the uplift, enrichment and unity that Parks, Arts and Education programs uniquely provide. For many of our kids, the arts are the key to unlocking the motivation, discipline and confidence they need to succeed. We’re grateful for the support of generous donors that have helped us launch high impact programs like The Blumey Awards, but that support only takes us so far. The opportunity and need to bring high impact programs is much greater. It will only occur with added funding and partnership with government that this sales tax will create. Over and over we’ve seen that an investment in free and low cost arts and education programs achieves great things in unifying our community and giving young people a positive vision of who they might become. We encourage you to join us in voting for Parks, Arts and Education for Everyone on Nov. 5.

This referendum will provide funding to expand our parks, greenways, open spaces, and recreational programs for people of all ages from youth, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. Finally, this referendum will enhance community arts, science, history, and cultural programs – ensuring arts programs reach into every neighborhood across the county. Here’s What Your FOR Vote Means: The quarter-cent sales tax will generate $50 million a year for increased teacher supplements and additional classroom support. It will also provide funding for arts and culture organizations to partner with Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools to restore school field trips. The proposed $17 million a year in increased funding for our parks and greenways will revitalize our system, which was ranked near the bottom of a recent national study of metropolitan parks systems. Citizens have demanded an increased

Allocation Of Additional $50 Million/Year In Revenue
The new funds will be used to eliminate barriers to participation – expanding arts and cultural programs into neighborhoods across the county, regardless of where residents live or what they can afford. This new revenue will be transformational for Mecklenburg County families. The enhancement of our quality of life and community enrichment throughout the county is well worth this investment.

ransformational. That’s the best way to describe the impact of the upcoming quarter-cent sales tax referendum appearing before voters in the November election.
If approved, this referendum will provide a new revenue stream to the arts, science, history and cultural programs that will have a tremendous impact in every neighborhood across this county. Ballet, Opera and Symphony performances, educational programs and engagement opportunities will reach more area schools, community centers, houses of worship and recreation centers making programs possible and accessible for all. This referendum represents a new opportunity for voters to move our county forward, invest in our future, and improve our quality of life. While the cultural sector will benefit greatly — our schools will also receive new funding for increased teacher salaries, new teaching assistants and additional support staff in the classroom such as nurses, counselors and psychologists. The referendum will also create a new revenue stream to expand our parks, greenways and recreational programs — helping our county keep pace with growth and utilization. “This is an important moment in our county’s future,” said Darrel Williams, chairman of the Partnership for a Better Mecklenburg, the campaign committee advocating for passage of the referendum. “Your vote FOR means you’re willing to invest in our county’s future, in our schools and students, in our parks and greenways and in our arts, science, history and cultural programs.” As the executives of the Ballet, Opera and Symphony — together we ask you to join us in support of this referendum on Tuesday, Nov. 5. It’s a small investment with huge returns for our county’s quality of life. Let’s transform Mecklenburg County. You can do that when you vote FOR the November referendum. Sincerely,

SYNOPSIS ACT ONE PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris. 1832, PARIS Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognise Valjean until he has gone.
9C
The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically-minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. ACT TWO The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The next day the rebels are all killed. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists he must go away. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s ‘father’ is a murderer and as proof produces a ring which he stole from the corpse the night the barricade fell. It is Marius’s own ring and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies.

Fun Facts About Macbeth (the Opera)
G
iuseppe Verdi once said of his opera, “Be guided by this: There are three roles in this opera and three roles only: Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, and the witches.”
“On the evening of the final rehearsal, with the theater full, we were dressed and ready, the orchestra in place, the chorus on stage, when Verdi made a sign to me and Varesi, and called us backstage: he asked us – as a favor to him – to rehearse that damned duet again at the piano.”
How much information can music convey? Consider this: The libretto of Verdi’s Macbeth contains fewer than half as many words as Shakespeare’s play.
— Marianna Barbieri-Nini, the first to play Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s opera
In the theater, many believe that Shakespeare’s Macbeth is jinxed. They won’t even say the title aloud, calling it instead “the Scottish play.”
With Macbeth, Verdi succeeded where Beethoven fumbled. The man translating Shakespeare into an opera libretto for the German composer died while writing Act II, so Beethoven gave up, leaving behind only sketches for themes and a prelude.
When Verdi’s Macbeth premiered, audiences were unhappy with the relationships it depicted. They complained because the opera contains no love affairs or traditional romantic pairings.
Make sure you catch Opera Carolina’s new production of Macbeth at the Belk Theater next month on Nov. 7, 9 and 10

Our Commitment to Community
usic is a catalyst for a stronger, more connected community. That belief is at the heart of the Charlotte Symphony, and every day we provide exceptional musical experiences that inspire our community, plus programs that create new pathways of opportunity. If you think the Charlotte Symphony sounds good onstage, listen to all we're doing off stage: 1. We believe in equity and inclusion, and we aim to reflect diversity onstage. We seek out exceptional women conductors, as well as conductors, composers and guest artists of color. 2. We create opportunities that can change lives. Attend a Project Harmony performance and you'll feel the difference we're making in the lives of students. 3. We nurture hundreds of area students at all talent levels in the
highest quality of music education in our youth orchestras. Plus, we've restructured our audition process, so that every child can participate. 4. Don't love the concert hall? Catch us out at a brewery or park in your community. We bring music to people where they are – as far as Gastonia and Chester, S.C. 5. Through our senior programs, we work to improve memory and give our seniors a more joyful life. 6. Music is a right, not a privilege, so financial status should never be a barrier. We offer a sliding scale for Youth Orchestra tuition; many of our community concerts are free or under $20; and, if you're on public assistance, we save $1 seats just for you. Sounds good, right? We're just warming up.

Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker – Creating Memories for Years to Come!
C
harlotte Ballet's Nutcracker, presented by Bank of America, returns this season to bring your family treasured holiday memories for years to come! With dancing mice, a Christmas tree that springs from the floor, an epic battle between Nutcracker and Mouse King, an indoor snowfall and a fantastical journey through the land of sweets, it’s hard to choose a favorite moment. We asked some of Charlotte Ballet’s dancers about their own Nutcracker memories. Here’s what they had to say. “Growing up in New York, I always saw posters of New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker on my way to school, and I thought, ‘one day I want to do that.’” – Raven Barkley “I love it all – the tutu, the tiara and being dressed in head-to-toe sparkles (as Sugar Plum).” – Chelsea Dumas Photo by Jeff Cravotta
“I was 15 when I saw Nutcracker for the first time, and a year later I was dancing in it! Nutcracker is what made me realize I wanted to be a professional ballet dancer.” – Juwan Alston “The first thing that screamed at me was the snow scene.” – Maurice Mouzon Jr. “Nutcracker has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. One of my first roles was as a soldier, and I remember getting in the car and telling my mom how excited I was to jump on a mouse’s back during the battle scene!” – Alessandra James It’s never too early to start planning your family’s treasured holiday memories. Tickets to this year’s Nutcracker, featuring live music from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, are available now and start at just $25!

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
