Rick Wallace fulfilled a 55-year dream when he purchased a Harley Davidson, but that dream turned into a nightmare when he wrecked the motorcycle just six weeks later. A severed trachea (windpipe) left him without the ability to speak. Rick found his voice again thanks to the Voice and Swallowing Center at Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, P.A. (CEENTA). He no longer has the range to sing in the church choir, though he can still sing his granddaughter to sleep. “And that’s good enough for me,” says Rick. This collaboration between Blumenthal Performing Arts and PNC Bank is designed to bring stellar performers from a variety of genres right here to the Queen City. “We are ecstatic by the audience response to this new series,” says Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard. “We look forward to presenting the remaining artists in our theaters, where the acoustics and sightlines will make each performance one to savor. Hearing these amazing talents up close and personal is a treat, and we sincerely thank PNC for helping to make this possible.” If you missed out on the first two PNC Celebrity Series shows, there are more opportunities coming soon to catch some of the world’s best artists and celebrities. Distinctive and soulful, his is one of the most yearningly emotive voices of our time. Michael McDonald is an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ’70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What a Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown covers albums and recent genrebusting guest spots with alternative buzz bands Grizzly Bear and Holy Ghost, the fivetime Grammy-winning McDonald is that rare thing in contemporary pop – an artist whose work is both timeless and ever-evolving. Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour Feb. 24, 2014, in Belk Theater

entertaining and romantic concert events of the year with The Love Tour. Brickman's engaging stage presence seamlessly blends mood and music to touch the heart in a special way, letting fans’ imaginations take them wherever they want to go. With dazzling solo piano and star-studded vocal collaborations, Brickman will wow audience members with his hits including “Valentine,” “If You Believe,” “Love of My Life” and more. The Love Tour strikes the perfect balance between musical intimacy, compelling storytelling and audience interaction.

Alton Brown brings his brand of quirky humor and culinary-science antics to the stage. The two-hour show is a unique blend of stand-up comedy, food experimentation, talk show antics, multimedia lecture, and live music. Audience interaction is strictly enforced throughout the evening, though if you’re called upon as a culinary assistant, you’ll definitely want to take the lab coat Brown offers, as things tend to get messy. Brown has worked his weird magic on live audiences across the nation for more than a decade, but this is the first time he’s actually hit the road with a live tour. The entire family will have a blast, especially as you sing along with Brown’s soon to be hits “Airport Shrimp Blues” and “TV Cookin Ain’t Like No Other Cookin.”

The Colors of Christmas Dec. 20 and 21 in Knight Theater Don’t miss the Colors of Christmas featuring four superstar performers in one amazing holiday show! Peabo Bryson (“A Whole New World”), CeCe Winans (“Everlasting Love”), Ruben Studdard (American Idol winner) and Melissa Manchester (“Midnight Blue” and “Lovers After All”) share the Knight Theater spotlight for two unforgettable nights! Performing their classic, chart-topping hits, as well as holiday favorites, these incredible talents bring the most magical show of the season center stage!

The PNC Celebrity Series shows sell out fast, so don’t wait to get your tickets. We’ll be adding more great shows throughout the season. Visit us at BlumenthalArts.org for more information, and stay in the loop by joining our email club from the About Us page on the website. – Elise Esasky contributed to this article

Charlotte Students Shine at The Jimmy Awards in New York By Elise Esasky Communications Manager

E

va Maria Noblezada of Northwest School of the Arts has been performing for years, but when she was given the chance to do so on a Broadway stage at the 2013 Jimmy Awards, she was beside herself. “The feeling of performing on the Minskoff stage with such a large cast of talented people was absolutely breathtaking,” says Noblezada. Just a couple of months earlier in the 2013 Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards, known as The Blumey Awards, at Belk Theater, she won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ariel in her school’s production of Footloose. Areon Mobasher, making his first foray into musical theater, won Best Actor for his portrayal of Jean Valjean in Charlotte Latin School’s production of Les Misérables at The Blumeys, sponsored by Wells Fargo. The Blumey Awards was created by Blumenthal Performing Arts two years ago to recognize, celebrate and nurture the talents of high school theater students in the Charlotte region, as well as to offer area students a pathway to the National High School Musical Theater Awards competition in New York, known as The Jimmy Awards. Noblezada was one of the top four finishers in the Best Actress category in the weeklong national competition, where 62 high school students from 31 organizations competed at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “We were thrilled to have one of our Charlotte representatives be among the finalists in the national competition in only the second year of The Blumey Awards,” says Blumenthal Performing Arts President Tom Gabbard. “It speaks to the quality of the high school musical theater programs and the teachers leading these efforts in our region.” The national awards show was held on Broadway at the Minskoff Theater, where participants received intense advice on their solo songs from Broadway veterans.

“I have learned so much throughout this whole experience, not only as an actor but as a person,” says Noblezada. “The part of The Jimmy Award’s that stood out to me most was the lack of competitiveness. It was a competition, but none of us saw it that way. We wanted to simply share our love for what we do with the audience, with each other and with ourselves.” Mobasher’s award-winning performance in The Blumey Awards may have been his first foray into musical theater, but the experience has him thinking hard about his career aspirations. “It was intimidating at first, but I immediately clicked with my fellow nominees, and the sense of community was amazing,” says Mobasher. “Though I’m not certain of what I want to study in college this fall, I know I want to perform out in the professional world, and this definitely has me rethinking my longterm career goals.” 20
