Meet Three Outstanding Scholarship Winners By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

D

uring one magical night at the end of May, The Blumey Awards celebrates the achievements of local high school students in the performing arts. It’s also the moment when the recipients of three major scholarships are announced. This year, Hannah-Kathryn Wall and Kahlil Cabble won the Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship, a $10,000 annually renewable award for students pursuing college programs in the performing arts. Sophie Ferer received the Gordon Hay Scholarship – a $5,000 award for special learning opportunities tied to a nonperforming career in the performing arts. Wall, a graduate of Northwest School of the Arts, will attend Western Carolina University’s School of Stage and Screen where she plans to study musical theater and performance psychology. She won a 2017 Blumey Award for best supporting actress and was one of 14 students to perform alongside professionals at A Gala Tribute to William Ivey Long. Wall says winning the Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship has been a dream come true. “I don't always fit the stereotype of a leading lady, but I want to pursue improvement in this area while in

college,” she says. “I hope that if I can make it, I can inspire other black girls who are 5'9" and not so petite that they can do it too.” Cabble, a graduate of Central Academy of Technology & Arts, will attend Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, where he will focus on musical theater. “When I got (this award), I was over the moon,” says Cabble, who costarred in his school’s production of On The Town last spring. “I’ve really discovered who I am as a person, and that’s come from all my experiences at CATA and the arts.” Feher, a graduate of Ardrey Kell high school, heads this fall to Savannah College of Art and Design where she will study animation. She started getting serious about drawing and involved in theater as a middle school student. She loves preproduction work, like designing sets and posters. A self-taught artist, she also has an incredible talent for animating songs. Her YouTube channel, “SoapTears,” features her quirky selection of animated tunes and has nearly 13,000 followers. She draws each frame and then animates them using her iPad. She plans to use her scholarship to invest in technology and books and hopes someday to have her own cartoon series on TV.

Celebrate the Centennial of 2 Creative Geniuses: Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein

C

harlotte Ballet is thrilled to join in the worldwide centennial celebration of American composer Leonard Bernstein and legendary choreographer Jerome Robbins. Experience their iconic work, Fancy Free, presented at Charlotte Ballet’s Fall Works – the first performance of the 2018/2019 season. Set in New York in the 1940s, Fancy Free tells the story of three small-town sailors spending their last night on the town before shipping out to the front. This playful American ballet was the beginning of a lifelong collaboration and friendship between these landmark artists. Fancy Free later served as the inspiration for the Broadway musical, On the Town. Robbins’ Broadway repertory spans many more beloved hits including West Side Story, The King and I and Fiddler on the Roof. The centennial celebration continues with the world premiere of a highly anticipated new work by Charlotte Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Sasha Janes, set to Bernstein’s iconic music. To round out this exciting triple bill, Artistic Director Hope Muir introduces Charlotte audiences to French choreographer Medhi Walerski’s Petite Cérémonie, which reviewers call a “light-hearted piece full of spunky energy.”

“We are excited to join Discovery Place Science in bringing National Geographic Live! to Charlotte,” said Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard. “It’s an extraordinary program in and of itself, but we have an additional element – thanks to the assets of Discovery Place Science – that we think will make this a truly unique experience. Along with compelling speakers, participants can attend a preshow party where they’ll meet others who share their curiosity about the world and get a chance to play with some of Discovery Place’s fantastic ‘toys,’ like telescopes and touch tanks.” National Geographic Live! participants will begin their evening at 6 p.m. in Discovery Place Science where they’ll have a chance to enjoy cocktails and chat with other guests, as well as try out special activities and demonstrations

associated with that evening’s National Geographic Live! topic. The National Geographic Live! speaker will begin at 7:30 p.m. in McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square, directly across the street from Discovery Place Science.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
