Charlotte Jazz Festival Returns With More Music and New Features By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

T

he dogwood trees won’t be the only thing blooming when the Charlotte Jazz Festival returns to uptown April 29-May 4. Expect this fourth annual event to be the biggest and best yet, with more opportunities to enjoy the many shades of jazz shimmering throughout the city. With new events, world-renowned performances and loads of free events too, you won’t want to miss a moment of the action. Here are some highlights: MAIN STAGE EVENTS Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will once again headline the festival in a range of formats, bringing their unparalleled virtuosity and inviting some of the best new talent on the scene to join them. “I’m really looking forward to the debut of Wynton's performance with the Future of Jazz Orchestra,” says Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. “It’s a very exciting concept to be introducing these exceptional young jazz artists.” In fact, Charlotte audiences will get a chance to preview Marsalis with the Future of Jazz Orchestra on Friday, May 2, before its New York premiere. This concert features an all Duke Ellington program, spanning from his early hits to his later suites. In this high-energy performance, Marsalis, bassist Rodney Whitaker, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and 4

saxophonist Dan Block will lead 16 of the best up-and-coming professionals, many of whom got their start through Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s Essentially Ellington Program for high school students. "Space," an original composition by Marsalis for orchestra and dance, will headline the following evening May 3. While Marsalis will not be part of this performance, his whimsical piece exploring the animal kingdom through music and movement will be front and center. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be joined Continued on Page 6

by award-winning theater and “jook” dancer Myles Yachts and Broadway triple threat tap artist Jared Grimes to bring 10 different animals to life – from the playfulness of the rooster to buzzing bees – incorporating hip-hop, jazz and tap dance with big band sounds. “It’s a fascinating way into the music that’s fresh and innovative,” says Joi Brown, director of the Charlotte Jazz Festival. “It is especially well-suited for families introducing younger and new audiences to jazz.” FULL EVENINGS OF MUSIC UNDER THE JAZZ TENT You can catch a different side of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra musicians when they perform with their own small combos at The Jazz Garden Tent at Romare Bearden Park. “These are extraordinary musicians with many facets to their work, including projects outside the jazz big band format.” says Brown. “They are all consummate composers and performers.” Camille Thurman, who has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald when she sings and to Dexter Gordon when she plays tenor sax, kicks things off May 1. She’s joined onstage by the Darrell Green Trio with guest appearances by trumpeter Marsalis. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Carlos Henriquez on bass, Kenny

Rampton on trumpet, and Paul Nedzela on baritone sax each appear with their own individual combos as a triple bill May 4. Stay for all three shows or come and go as you wish with one admission price. There will be more continuous music under the tent other nights too, including a Latin Jazz Dance Party May 2 and an all blues line up May 3. You can also start your day off with the Saturday Morning Jazz Brew May 4, hosted by internationally recognized musician Ocie Davis, who serves as artistic director of Charlotte’s own Jazz Arts Initiative. At last year’s Jazz Festival, above, the second line parade makes its way through uptown; below left, jazz artists perform in an outdoor concert; and below right, a crowd gathers for a jazz performance.

FREE EVENTS Last year’s popular Late Night Jam Sessions return to the basement of Knight Theater Friday and Saturday nights. “It’s a very cool speakeasy environment,” says Gabbard. The New Orlean’s style second line parade, a perennial favorite, returns too with a new time slot: noon Thursday, May 2. “We’re hopeful that workers will pour out of those office towers and join the second line,” says Gabbard. Enjoy lunchtime and happy hour shows throughout the week at the Levine Outdoor Pavilion with performances by

some of the leading local and regional artists. And speaking of local stand outs – don’t miss the finals of the Loonis McGlohon Young Jazz Artist Competition under the Jazz Tent at Romare Bearden Park May 3. The Charlotte Jazz Festival is more than a celebration of great music and exceptional artists. It’s an opportunity to bring the community together. “The social aspect is really important to us,” says Gabbard. “We’re trying to use jazz as the great connector to nurture relationships and good vibes between family members.”

Perform With the Charlotte Symphony at Pro-Am

ver wondered what it would be like to perform live on stage with a symphony orchestra? Dust off those instruments and join us at this year’s Pro-Am! A component of the Charlotte Symphony's education and engagement efforts, the annual Pro-Am experience gives community musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside symphony musicians in a professional setting. Participants in this year’s program will spend the afternoon rehearsing side-byside with Charlotte Symphony musicians

under the direction of resident conductor Christopher James Lees in works by Strauss, Fauré and Tchaikovsky in preparation for a free community concert that evening at Knight Theater. Between rehearsal and the performance, participants and Charlotte Symphony musicians will have the opportunity to engage further over a shared meal. The Charlotte Symphony Pro-Am experience is open to any musician 18 and older who plays a traditional symphony instrument. Participants must be able to provide their own instruments.

Opera Carolina

T

Opera Is for Everyone

o the uninitiated, opera may seem old-fashioned, inaccessible or elite. Allow us to refute some of these misconceptions. 1. I won’t understand it. On the contrary. We provide subtitles in English. Follow the plot and each lyrical line, no matter what language the opera is sung in. 2. Opera is too expensive. Get a single ticket at Opera Carolina for as little as $21. Youths (those under age 18) always get a 50 percent discount. And Student Rush tickets are $10. Group discounts are also available. 3. Opera is for old people. Opera is for all ages. In fact, Opera Carolina’s educational touring company, “Opera Xpress,” serves thousands of area school kids each

year. The young professionals’ group, “Bravo,” offers a variety of opportunities to engage with the opera. These events typically take place around each opera and are free to join. 4. I have to wear fancy clothes. Opera is a great opportunity to dress to the nines if you’d like, but you can wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. Bring out the little black dress … or dress in jeans. After all, art is about expressing one’s self. 5. It’s irrelevant. Opera and classical music provide the very foundation of modern music. Many movies and musicals (Pretty Woman, RENT) have been adapted from operas. Advertisers use operatic tunes to sell everything from corn chips to cars. Opera is everywhere.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
