Meet the Characters of Evita EVA PERÓN Born May 7, 1919, in Los Toldos, Argentina, Eva Perón, affectionately called Evita, is a leading political figure in her native country as first lady and wife to President Juan Perón of Argentina. She grew up poor and dreamed of becoming an actress. Around the age of 15, Perón found work with a number of theater companies in Buenos Aires. Her life changed dramatically when, in 1945, she married Juan Perón, a colonel and government official. He became president of Argentina the following year, and Evita was a powerful political influence on him.

was just 16 years old, and he occasionally passed her off as his daughter. Rumors of his sexual proclivity may have been exaggerated, but he did seem to like his women young. Evita was 24 years his junior.

JUAN PERÓN Juan Perón is an ambitious military figure who is initially ousted from power and then elected president of Argentina in 1946. He creates a powerful government administration with Evita’s help. Perón understands that if his political ambitions are to be realized, he needs the support of the majority – the labor forces of Argentina. So, he obtains the position of director of the National Labor Department, which in 1943 is elevated to secretariat of Labor and Public Welfare. The 1944 earthquake disaster in San Juan provides a further boost to his popularity as he sets up a relief fund and makes sure that the press coverage concentrates on his caring side.

ENSEMBLE • THE PEOPLE The ensemble represents the variety of people of Argentina as Evita makes her rise to power and prestige, most dramatically as The Descamisados – “shirtless ones.”

CHE The narrator, Che, is the charismatic, passionate, hopeful yet cynical guide through the events of Evita’s life. As he narrates, he is present in many scenes, playing different roles to provide insight, criticism and commentary from a variety of perspectives. MAGALDI Magaldi, a tango musician, is Evita’s first love interest. He is her ticket from small town life to the excitement and possibilities that Buenos Aires offers. THE MISTRESS The Mistress is Juan Perón’s lover, who Evita sends packing in order to take her place center stage in Perón’s life. When Juan Perón began his relationship with Eva, the mistress she usurped 6

Brown Bag Matinees Offer a More Casual Symphony Experience

f you’ve never been to the symphony, you might be concerned about what to wear or when to clap. If you’re a regular concertgoer, you might dread the thought of stifling a cough, especially if you forget to – gasp – unwrap your throat lozenges before the music starts! Now try to imagine a maestro welcoming the crinkling of lunch sacks in the concert hall because that’s what Charlotte Symphony Music Director Christopher Warren-Green wants at his new Brown Bag Matinees. Warren-Green initiated the Charlotte Symphony’s new lunchtime concerts this fall with a successful first Brown Bag Matinee on Oct. 25. The matinee ended with smiles, laughter and enthusiastic applause, yet the maestro was so intent on the audience’s comfort to enjoy the music and their meals that, backstage after the concert, he worriedly asked his staff why he hadn’t heard the tell-tale crumpling of wrappers or crunching of chips. The Charlotte Symphony is dedicated to enriching people’s lives through music. For Warren-Green, the Brown Bag Matinees are a way to engage working people who want to unwind during their midday break; seniors who might shy away from late trips to and from an evening concert; home-schooled and preschool-aged children; those with tight budgets (the Brown Bag Matinee tickets are under $15); Symphony newbies who want a trial run in a more relaxed setting; and anyone looking to experience live symphonic music during the day with a bite to eat and without the formalities. Listeners are encouraged to come as they are and lunch as they like. At just under an hour, the Brown Bag Matinees begin at noon and end by 1 p.m. for a perfect midday break. All take place at the Knight Theater in uptown Charlotte. Maestro Warren-Green and the world-class Charlotte Symphony Orchestra perform short pieces,

including overtures and movements from longer works, to deliver a diverse sampling of quality classical music. The next time you make a lunch date, consider packing a brown bag and meeting the Charlotte Symphony at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts!

SYnopsis “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land! And so I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!” – The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., “Mountaintop” Speech, April 3, 1968

A

fter his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., retires to his room in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. He is tired, overwrought, in need of clarity and deeply questioning the success of and his value to the civil rights movement. Camae, a beautiful young hotel maid, enters. She is as awed by King’s fame as he is by her beauty. The chemistry between them sparks immediately, and King invites her to sit and talk for a while. Their ensuing conversation, lasting throughout the long night, covers topics both personal and political – from King’s children, to the Memphis Sanitation Strike, to a debate about violent versus nonviolent revolution. As the evening progresses, Camae grows more mysterious, revealing thoughts and events about which only King could know. As it becomes increasingly clear that Camae is more than just an ordinary maid, she leads King through a powerful, vivid exploration of his life and legacy on what would become his final night on earth.

Characters KING The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. CAMAE A maid at the Lorraine Motel. ABOUT THE REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led the American civil rights movement from December 1955 to April 4, 1968, preaching a philosophy of nonviolent protest, grassroots organizing and civil disobedience. King was born into a religious family. His grandfather and father were pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. King drew on his faith for his principles and spoke frequently about his duty to God. King attended segregated public schools in Georgia and then attended Morehouse College, an AfricanAmerican institution in Atlanta, from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. King then studied theology for three years at the Crozer

15B

Synopsis Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class. He then enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953. In Boston, he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. They would have two sons and two daughters. By 1954, King was a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. When the Montgomery bus boycott began in 1955, King became one of the leaders of the movement. The Montgomery bus boycott became one of the most successful nonviolent demonstrations in modern history. During the boycott, King was arrested and his home was bombed, but he emerged as a great leader of the nonviolent civil rights movement. The boycott lasted 382 days and ended with a U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring

bus segregation unconstitutional. In 1957, King was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, formed to provide leadership for the growing civil rights movement. For the next 11 years, King traveled the country speaking more than 2,500 times, leading protests and acting against injustice. He wrote “Letter From a Birmingham Jail,” a manifesto for the civil rights movement, following his arrest during a protest in Birmingham, Ala.; he told more than 250,000 people “I Have a Dream” during a march in Washington, D.C.; and he led thousands in marches from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery. At the age of 35, King became the youngest person to win a Nobel Peace Prize. He gave the prize money to the civil rights movement. In April of 1968, in Memphis, Tenn., where he was supporting a sanitation workers strike, King was assassinated. The news shook the nation. King remains a symbol of nonviolence across the world, and he is the only person who was not a U.S. president to have a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Arizona Theatre Company (Producer) is the State Theatre of Arizona and the Southwest’s pre-eminent fully professional theater. Touching lives through the power of theater, each season of carefully selected productions reflects the rich variety of world drama – from classics to contemporary plays, from musical to new works, as audiences enjoy a rich emotional experience that can only be captured through live theatre. ATC also shares the passion of the theater through a wide array of education and community engagement programs, access initiatives, community events, readings and workshops. Based in two cities, ATC performs at the historic Temple of Music and Art in downtown Tucson and at the elegant Herberger Theatre Center in downtown Phoenix. Under the direction of Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein and Managing Director Jessica L. Andrews, ATC serves more than 130,000 people each year. Penumbra Theatre Company (Producer) was founded in 1976 by Lou Bellamy to make socially responsible art – art that demanded a response; art with intent; art that could create change. At a time when roles for black artists were limited to stereotypes and comical representations, Penumbra produced theater that roared with authenticity through the unrestrained and rich voice of black artists and playwrights. This respect for cultural authenticity became Penumbra’s signature style, and demand for it has reached new heights from theaters around the country

fostering collaborations, new productions, tours and awards. In 2006, Penumbra’s first national tour was co-produced with Trinity Repertory Company in the staging of Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers. Since then Bellamy and Penumbra have journeyed with Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Md.; The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Ore.; The Cleveland Play House in Cleveland; and Kansas City Repertory Theatre in Kansas City, Mo. This season, Penumbra joins forces with Arizona Theatre Company, Blumenthal Performing Arts in Charlotte and The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. For the latest news and updates, visit www.penumbratheatre.org. Blumenthal Performing Arts (Producer) Under the leadership of President Tom Gabbard, Blumenthal manages six venues in Charlotte’s Center City and is nationally recognized as an innovator for its diverse performing arts programming, which includes the Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series and the PNC Celebrity Series. Additionally, Blumenthal’s Education Department develops creative partnerships with schools and community organizations to bring the performing arts to life for people throughout the region. Individually and as a member of the Independent Presenters Network, Blumenthal has been a producer for a number of Broadway shows, national tours and London productions including Monty Python’s Spamalot (2005 Tony Award for Best Musical), The Color Purple, Legally Blonde, Frost/Nixon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands, Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella, 9 to 5, La Cage aux Folles, Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Ghost, Matilda, The Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess, Pippin (2013 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical) and Kinky Boots (2013 Tony Award for Best Musical). Jackson and Angela Bassett, Blumenthal is honored to work with Arizona Theatre Company and Penumbra Theatre Company to bring this co-production of the show to the Booth Playhouse.
