The Charlotte Observer Offers More In-depth Arts Coverage By Liz Rothaus Bertrand

G

reat news, theater fans: The Charlotte Observer recently announced plans to increase arts coverage, thanks to a grant from the Thrive Campaign for the Arts. In September, the paper issued its biggest arts season preview section in the last 25 years. (You can find that online at charlotteobserver.com.) Expect more feature stories, photos and videos of local artists and performers this season, as well as expanded listings and reviews. Also, there will be more profiles of the folks behind the scenes and articles on how the arts impact our community every day. “We wanted to find ways to make our reporting bolder, more robust,” says the Observer’s features editor Helen Schwab, who will be overseeing an expanded and more diverse roster of journalists. They range from reporters who have covered the arts and culture beat for years – like Lawrence Toppman on theater, and Lia Newman and Grace Cote on visual arts – as well as new voices at the Observer, such as Emiene Wright and Vanessa Infanzon. Creating stories that engage multiple audiences is also a priority. “Interestingly, I think people tend to think of 'arts readers' as a block audience,” says Schwab. “But people who are passionate about visual arts are not necessarily passionate about classical music, and theater lovers don't all go to the ballet. Certainly there's overlap, but less than you might think. So we're writing for a lot of different readers. ... You hope to engage them. "We think strong, diverse storytelling about people can get the job done." Here’s how you can access this expanded arts content and engage with others online: • Sign up for the Observer’s weekly 4

e-newsletter, “Inside Charlotte Arts” at charlotteobserver.com/newsletters. • Join the Inside Charlotte Arts Facebook Group to see what’s new, easily scroll through recent content, ask questions and connect with other readers at facebook.com/groups/ insidecharlottearts. • Bookmark the Observer’s new page dedicated to local arts stories at charlotteobserver.com/entertainment/ arts-culture. “We’re thankful to see the increased coverage of the arts in Charlotte and are grateful to the Thrive Fund to make it so,” says Tom Gabbard, president and CEO of Blumenthal Performing Arts. “The Charlotte Observer is enhancing awareness, insight and understanding of the rich variety of arts events and artists here in Charlotte.” Do you have ideas about events or artists the paper should be covering? The Observer wants to hear from you. Send questions or suggestions to arts@charlotteobserver.com. 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

here’s nothing like an evening at the theater, enjoying the best of Broadway or experiencing one of your favorite artists live in the Queen City. But what if you were able to lead a group of friends on a feline foray with CATS? Perhaps you and your fellow book club members would like a one-night-only jam session with the Rock of Ages band. The Daughter of the Regiment Princess Mulan meets Princess Diaries

I

f you love the fierceness of the title character in Disney’s Mulan or the transformation of Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, in The Princess Diaries, then Marie, the creation of Gaetano Donizetti, may be the operatic heroine for you. She’s orphaned and then raised by a battalion of doting soldiers. (Improbable, yes – but it makes for a sweet story.) Being the only woman in a French Army regiment, she grows up surrounded by paternal love. Lots of it. This regiment is 1,500 soldiers strong.

Marie masters marching, running and singing with the regiment. But when she finds love, society – in the form of an aristocratic aunt she never knew she had – tries to change her into something she’s not. Marie must choose between her aristocratic lineage or following her heart. But, Marie’s been raised well by an army of dads. She follows her heart – and she’s sure to win yours. March to the Belk Theater Nov. 10, 15 or 18 and root for your new favorite heroine.

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM CORAL KINGDOMS AND EMPIRES OF ICE Explore a hidden universe through the eyes of the photographic team of David Doubilet and his underwater partner Jennifer Hayes. David is one of the most prolific living photographers at National Geographic magazine and a legend for his groundbreaking work. Jennifer is an aquatic biologist and a globally published photojournalist. David has joked – we think he’s joking – that he’s spent more of his waking hours underwater than on dry land. The two will lead you on a visual journey from their most recent National Geographic assignments, from the tropics to the polar ice. Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, is a corner of the coral triangle that also includes the Philippines and Indonesia, and it’s the center of the world in terms of marine biodiversity. Discover an unspoiled wilderness of water crowded with layers of

life: from fingernail-sized pygmy seahorses to 60-foot tall towers of barracudas. Then, journey south to the cold, icefilled waters of Antarctica, where the team moves through and under the ice to capture images of the hidden world of the leopard seal, penguins, shipwrecks and David’s newest work on the sculptural beauty of icebergs. Finally, follow the team north to Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence, an extraordinary world of whales, wolfish, salmon and the harp seal – a remarkable creature fighting to survive in a world of shrinking sea ice. Go beyond the published story with David and Jennifer as they share neverbefore-seen images from their assignments. Discover the reality of life behind the camera – from parasites to harp seal bites – as they share their adventures working to get the best shot.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS DAVID DOUBILET David Doubilet has a long and intimate vision into the sea. He began snorkeling at age 8 at summer camp in the Adirondack, and by age 12 he was making pictures underwater using a Brownie Hawkeye camera stuffed into a rubber anesthesiologist bag. The bag filled with air and it was like trying to submerge the Hindenburg. The pictures Photo by Kelly Stremmel were barely recognizable. Doubilet David has long since mastered the techniques of working with water and light to become one of the world’s most celebrated underwater photographers and a contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine, where he has published nearly 70 stories since his first assignment in 1971. David has spent five decades under the surface in the far corners of the world—from interior Africa, remote tropical coral reefs, rich temperate seas, and recent projects in the northern and southern ice. David’s personal challenge is to create a visual voice for the world’s oceans and to connect people to the incredible beauty and silent devastation happening within the invisible world below. David is a contributing editor for several publications and an author of 12 titles, including the award-winning Water Light Time. His photographic awards include numerous Picture of the Year, BBC Wildlife, Communication Arts and World Press awards. David is a member of the Academy of Achievement, Royal Photographic Society, International League of Conservation Photographers, International Diving Hall of Fame and a Trustee of the Shark Research Institute. David was named a National Geographic Contributing Photographerin-Residence in 2001. He is honored to be a Rolex Ambassador and recipient of the prestigious Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Award and Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography. David lives with his wife and photographic 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

partner, Jennifer Hayes in Clayton, New York, a small river town in the Thousand Island region of the St. Lawrence River. JENNIFER HAYES Jennifer Hayes is an aquatic biologist and photojournalist specializing in natural history and marine environments. Jennifer Hayes and David Doubilet collaborate as a photographic team above and below water on project development, story production, feature Photo by Kelly Stremmel articles, and books. National Geographic Hayes assignments have taken them around the globe – to Africa’s Okavango Delta, through tropical and temperate seas, and to the poles. Recent projects have found them in the remote corners of the Great Barrier Reef, under oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, swimming among congregations of 500-pound goliath grouper, and submerged in the ice with a harp seal mother and her pups. Jennifer is the editor and author of numerous articles on marine environments, with images appearing in countless books, advertising campaigns, and publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Sport Diver, DIVE Magazine, Diver, People, Alert Diver and Ocean Geographic. She is co-author and photographer for "Face to Face With Sharks" by National Geographic Books and an honorary editor for Ocean Geographic magazine. Jennifer’s passion for the study and conservation of primitive fishes led to graduate degrees in zoology and marine biology. Her research has included shark exploitation and finning in the western North Atlantic and the life history and population dynamics of sturgeon species. Jen is a trustee for the Shark Research Institute and a Fellow National member of the Explorers Club. Jennifer and David co-own their studio and stock photography company, Undersea Images Inc., located on the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, New York. 9B

Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker by the Numbers

C

elebrate the sights and sounds of the holidays at Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker, presented by Bank of America. Complete with choreography by JeanPierre Bonnefoux and music from the Charlotte Symphony, Nutcracker premiered in 2016 with all new sets by Alain Vaes and costume designs by Holly Hynes. These changes made Nutcracker larger than life and more exciting than ever before! Whether it’s a treasured family tradition or you’re experiencing it for the first time, here are some fascinating facts about the many costumes in Nutcracker: 1. There were 208 new costumes made for Nutcracker in 2016. Not to mention the hand-painted scenery and sets for the performance. 2. Our million-dollar makeover had 746 costumes pieces created coast to coast. The Snow Queen had her tutu designed in Newport Beach, California, while her crown, wand and other accessories were created in Sayville, New York. Photo by Jeff Cravotta

3. Over 300 costume makers helped construct the costumes. Thirty of these costume makers were from right here in Charlotte. Charlotte Ballet’s costume shop handmade the dolls’ dresses used in the Party Scene. 4. The Mouse King’s head took 120 hours to construct. Because it is such an intricate piece, makers had to assure it was just right for the performance. Fun fact: Holly used pop sensation Prince as her inspiration for the Mouse King costume! 5. The Soldiers’ uniforms included over 750 hand-sewn buttons. Details are important, even from the stage. Costume makers had to assure that each detail was perfect, including every single button. It’s never too early to start planning your family’s treasured holiday memories. Avoid the holiday drama – tickets are available now and start at only $25!

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
