Gothic Fairy Tale to Open 2013-14 Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series

atthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty turns the traditional tale of good vs. evil and rebirth upside-down, creating a supernatural love story for all ages. It’s ballet meets Broadway, following the story’s heroine from her wild child beginnings to the modern day when she awakens from her long sleep. Along the way, she encounters fairies, zombies and a host of gothic creatures in the magical realm created by the show’s extraordinary set, costumes and lighting.

The Scottish Herald calls it “sumptuous, dramatic, eerie and captivating.” The New York Times said “this is Bourne at his best” bringing in “huge audiences more associated with Broadway than ballet.” Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty plays the Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Nov. 5-10. orth Carolina Dance Theatre’s 2013-2014 Season opens in October with a premiere of Associate Artistic Director Sasha Janes’ Carmen. The company of 26 professional dancers – led by President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux – spent the summer performing and preparing for the season ahead. In June, N.C. The show premieres on August 4 at Edinburgh’s Zoo Southside venue. Forging a partnership with producer James Seabright and director Dominic Knutton, Dan and Jeff premiere a new version of the show at Pleasance Islington in October. 2007: Under the guidance of director Richard Hurst, the show tours the U.K. including Pleasance Edinburgh, where the seventh book is incorporated just a few days after its release. The tour finishes with a Christmas run at Trafalgar Studios in London. 2008: More U.K. touring, again playing Edinburgh Fringe and London. Dan and Jeff also launch their second show, Potted Pirates. 2009: Owing to their commitments as Children’s BBC presenters, Dan and Jeff hand over the show to a new cast, David Ahmad and John Helier, who take it on tour to Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival, and New Zealand Comedy Festival. Dan and Jeff wrestle the show back from them for a third and final Christmas run at Trafalgar Studios.

2010: The show takes a well-earned rest while Dan and Jeff create their new show, Potted Panto, premiering at the Edinburgh Fringe and transferring to the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre for Christmas, where it is nominated as Best Entertainment in the 2011 Olivier Awards. 2011: Potted Potter returns for another tour, starting at Bury St. Edmunds Theatre Royal and including runs at Pleasance Grand and London’s Garrick Theatre. 2012: Potted Potter is nominated for the Best Entertainment and Family Olivier Award in the U.K. to start its world tour, Potted Potter makes its North American premiere in Toronto at David Mirvish’s Panasonic Theatre, presented by Starvox Entertainment and Potted Productions. Following Toronto, Potted Potter opens off-Broadway at New York City’s Little Shubert Theater, followed by eight weeks at Chicago’s Broadway Playhouse. As well as its North America dates, the show tours across Australasia and South Africa. 2013: Potted Potter triumphantly returned to London’s West End after successfully touring throughout North America. It recently completed a successful return engagement at New York’s Little Shubert Theatre. From September until the end of the year, the show continues its U.S. tour. The Charlotte Symphony Welcomes All Music Lovers This Fall

T

Midtown Men – Nov. 1 and 2 Midtown Men bring to life favorite ’60s hits by The Four Seasons, Beach Boys, Motown artists and more.

he Charlotte Symphony Orchestra has served as the Queen City’s resident orchestra for 82 seasons, but every concert is a unique experience that, in the words of Music Director Christopher WarrenGreen, “connects individuals in the seats to each other and to the musicians on stage.” He says, “… the real joy, the best music, comes from live performances because music lives in the hearts of the audience.” If you’re into the Indigo Girls or Tchaikovsky, or you want to celebrate Bachtoberfest with a brew or maybe take the kids to Adventures in Outer Space, or if you are a fan of Broadway, Beethoven or the Beatles, then you should connect with the CSO this fall!

Beethoven & Mozart – Nov. 8 and 9 BUTTERWORTH “The Banks of Green Willow” MOZART Piano Concerto No. 21 BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” Live and Let Die: A McCartney Symphonic Tribute to Paul McCartney – Nov. 15 and 16 Presented by Hearst Corporation A veteran of the Broadway hit Beatlemania who looks and sounds just like Paul McCartney, Tony Kishman fronts a four-piece band and the orchestra for McCartney’s best-loved solo and Beatles hits, including “Hey Jude,” “Penny Lane,” “Uncle Albert,” “The Long and Winding Road,” “Maybe I’m Amazed” and more.

Indigo Girls – Indigo Girls Oct. 5 Presented by Novant Health “Along with Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers rank at the very top of all-time great duos,” raves The Boston Herald.

Adventures in Outer Space – Nov. 16 Kids and families take off for galaxies far far away with Roquefort the mouse on a cosmic journey fueled by music from Star Wars, E.T., Superman and “Planets.” Suit-up for the adventure in your intergalactic-inspired costumes and navigate an asteroid field!

Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique” – Oct. 11 and 12 MOZART Overture to “Don Giovanni” SAINT-SAENS Violin Concerto No. 3 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique” Bachtoberfest: Bach & Beer – Oct. 25 Co-hosted by the Alemannia Society Wagner, Bach and Schubert, plus an Oktoberfest event with free local beer sampling from Rock Bottom and Triple C breweries, German fare from Waldhorn Restaurant and Mostly Chocolate, and an oompah band!

Bach St. Matthew Passion – Nov. 22 and 23 A pillar of Western classical and sacred repertoire, St. Matthew Passion retells the biblical passion story through a score exceptional for its musical richness and powerful choral movements.

Open Mic Events Allow Charlotte’s Talent to Shine

ou can sample some of the great talent that Charlotte has to offer at Blumenthal Performing Arts’ new Open Mic shows. At a typical event, you will see a variety of acts, ranging from singers and dancers, to jugglers and comedians, and admission is free! The bimonthly Open Mic events have attracted so many participants that a lottery system is used to select the acts. If you want more information on how to participate, visit BlumenthalArts.org/Whirl. Open Mic shows have also seen strong

interest from fans. “It is always a fun evening,” said Blumenthal patron Lester Ranson. “You get to hear and see a variety of live performers and encourage developing talent.” These exciting shows are part of a new active arts initiative, called Whirl. Whirl events are designed to give locals a chance to participate as a performer or as a fan. The next Open Mic show is scheduled for November in McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square. Check the website BlumenthalArts.org for the latest details.
