Meet the Characters of Evita EVA PERÓN Born May 7, 1919, in Los Toldos, Argentina, Eva Perón, affectionately called Evita, is a leading political figure in her native country as first lady and wife to President Juan Perón of Argentina. She grew up poor and dreamed of becoming an actress. Around the age of 15, Perón found work with a number of theater companies in Buenos Aires. Her life changed dramatically when, in 1945, she married Juan Perón, a colonel and government official. He became president of Argentina the following year, and Evita was a powerful political influence on him.

was just 16 years old, and he occasionally passed her off as his daughter. Rumors of his sexual proclivity may have been exaggerated, but he did seem to like his women young. Evita was 24 years his junior.

JUAN PERÓN Juan Perón is an ambitious military figure who is initially ousted from power and then elected president of Argentina in 1946. He creates a powerful government administration with Evita’s help. Perón understands that if his political ambitions are to be realized, he needs the support of the majority – the labor forces of Argentina. So, he obtains the position of director of the National Labor Department, which in 1943 is elevated to secretariat of Labor and Public Welfare. The 1944 earthquake disaster in San Juan provides a further boost to his popularity as he sets up a relief fund and makes sure that the press coverage concentrates on his caring side.

ENSEMBLE • THE PEOPLE The ensemble represents the variety of people of Argentina as Evita makes her rise to power and prestige, most dramatically as The Descamisados – “shirtless ones.”

CHE The narrator, Che, is the charismatic, passionate, hopeful yet cynical guide through the events of Evita’s life. As he narrates, he is present in many scenes, playing different roles to provide insight, criticism and commentary from a variety of perspectives. MAGALDI Magaldi, a tango musician, is Evita’s first love interest. He is her ticket from small town life to the excitement and possibilities that Buenos Aires offers. THE MISTRESS The Mistress is Juan Perón’s lover, who Evita sends packing in order to take her place center stage in Perón’s life. When Juan Perón began his relationship with Eva, the mistress she usurped 6

Brown Bag Matinees Offer a More Casual Symphony Experience

f you’ve never been to the symphony, you might be concerned about what to wear or when to clap. If you’re a regular concertgoer, you might dread the thought of stifling a cough, especially if you forget to – gasp – unwrap your throat lozenges before the music starts! Now try to imagine a maestro welcoming the crinkling of lunch sacks in the concert hall because that’s what Charlotte Symphony Music Director Christopher Warren-Green wants at his new Brown Bag Matinees. Warren-Green initiated the Charlotte Symphony’s new lunchtime concerts this fall with a successful first Brown Bag Matinee on Oct. 25. The matinee ended with smiles, laughter and enthusiastic applause, yet the maestro was so intent on the audience’s comfort to enjoy the music and their meals that, backstage after the concert, he worriedly asked his staff why he hadn’t heard the tell-tale crumpling of wrappers or crunching of chips. The Charlotte Symphony is dedicated to enriching people’s lives through music. For Warren-Green, the Brown Bag Matinees are a way to engage working people who want to unwind during their midday break; seniors who might shy away from late trips to and from an evening concert; home-schooled and preschool-aged children; those with tight budgets (the Brown Bag Matinee tickets are under $15); Symphony newbies who want a trial run in a more relaxed setting; and anyone looking to experience live symphonic music during the day with a bite to eat and without the formalities. Listeners are encouraged to come as they are and lunch as they like. At just under an hour, the Brown Bag Matinees begin at noon and end by 1 p.m. for a perfect midday break. All take place at the Knight Theater in uptown Charlotte. Maestro Warren-Green and the world-class Charlotte Symphony Orchestra perform short pieces,

including overtures and movements from longer works, to deliver a diverse sampling of quality classical music. The next time you make a lunch date, consider packing a brown bag and meeting the Charlotte Symphony at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts!
