ver 47,000 theatergoers cheered when JERSEY BOYS made its sell-out premiere in Charlotte in April 2010. Worldwide, more than 13 million people have seen JERSEY BOYS. And now, the show that made critics and audiences cheer is “Working Its Way Back” to Charlotte! JERSEY BOYS is “a rock-and-roll jolt of history, a smashing serenade of the muscular harmonies of one of the more remarkable sensations of the ‘60s. The Four Seasons in bloom,” says The Washington Post. Besides touring all over the world, the show is still going strong on Broadway. It received four Tony® awards, including Best Musical, and many others awards including: a Theatre World, two Drama Desk, three Outer Critics Circle, a Drama League, a Grammy, four What’s On Stage, one of London’s Olivier, two of Toronto’s Dora and three of Australia’s Helpmann. JERSEY BOYS chronicles the rise of one of the most popular music groups

of all time. Overcoming adversity in the shape of the mob, loan sharks, racism, machismo, gender, robberies, debt, jail, drugs, divorce and $150,000, these boys discovered how to “Walk Like A Man” as they sold 175,000,000 records before they were 30 years old. Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe are the powerhouse team that wrote and produced many hits for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. In 1958, the Four Seasons were called the Four Lovers and did back-up vocals for some music groups that Crewe produced. That same year, the Lovers met Gaudio while performing on the same stage in Baltimore. Also that year, the Lovers had an unsuccessful audition at the Four Seasons Bowling Alley in Union Township, NJ. According to Gaudio, “We figured we’ll come out of this with something. So we took the name of the bowling alley. It was called the Four Seasons.” Valli’s distinctive falsetto sound

started as a joke. “My mother and father lived in Ocean Beach, NJ, and I went to see The Seasons [perform] at this dive in Point Pleasant. Frankie did a thing that night that blew me away,” Crewe says. “He put a bandana over his head, took two maracas and stuck them under his coat [for breasts], and began singing “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” like [1940s cabaret singer] Nellie Lutcher, with that high voice. I said to Bob [Gaudio], ‘Go write a song for Frankie with that chichi voice, and jump it an octave.’ “ Quoted on his website, Frankie Valli said, “Many R&B groups had used falsetto as part of their background harmonies, but we were different because we put the falsetto out front and made it the lead.”

When something works, it works. Take a look at the string of hits for the boys from Jersey: “Sherry” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” “Walk Like a Man” “Dawn” “Rag Doll” “Ronnie” “Save It For Me” “Big Man In Town” “Bye Bye Baby” “Silence is Golden” “Girl Come Running” “Beggin’” “Candy Girl” In 1965, the team started creating hit songs for Valli that did not use the famous falsetto. “The Proud One” “To Give” And the song inspired by sunrise over New York City’s Central Park: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.”

or decades, Disney songs have captured children and adults alike. From feel-good ditties to songs with real messages about life’s lessons, Disney refrains have resonated for generations. The happy characters of the Jungle Book espoused, “Forget about your worries and your strife, the bare necessities of life will come to you.” In “Hakuna Matata,” The Lion King’s playful animals advised, “Hakuna Matata! Ain’t no passing craze, It means no worries for the rest of your days, It’s our problem-free philosophy...” And who can forget The Little Mermaid’s passionate longing in “Part of Your World,” when Ariel dreams, “Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun, Wanderin’ free-wish I could be part of that world…” Disney in Concert: Magical Music from the Movies will transport the young and young-at-heart on a musical journey featuring songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King and more. Conducted by Albert-George Schram and featuring four guest soloists, this

enchanted performance will bring favorite Disney stories to life through memorable melodies, film clips and rare original storyboard art. For two extraordinary performances, including a special matinee for afternoon audiences, the Charlotte Symphony will perform these engaging classics. Hear your favorite ballads, love songs and comedic choruses as Princesses and paupers sing of universal life and love lessons. Be reminded of the imaginative power and drama of the animated screen. Don’t miss this opportunity to share in the magic of Disney and discover anew why these timeless motion picture scores continue to enchant audiences of all ages. The CSO Pops Series features artists such as Natalie Cole, The Music of Michael Jackson, A John Williams Spectacular and many more. The CSO performance season also includes the Classics series, family-friendly Lollipops concerts and the innovative KnightSounds series. Sleeping Beauty A fantastical fairy tale ballet

S

“The ballet is magical, and I’m excited to see how Jean-Pierre brings the story to life on stage.” Bonnefoux plans to draw on his past to bring something special to his version of Sleeping Beauty. “I have a unique perspective on Petipa and Tchaikovsky because of my tenure as a principal dancer at Paris Opera Ballet and New York City Ballet,” said Bonnefoux.

leeping Beauty’s timeless tale of a beautiful princess, a dashing prince and the triumph of good over evil with a single kiss has delighted audiences of all ages for years. In March 2012, North Carolina Dance Theatre performs Sleeping Beauty for the first time. President and Artistic Director JeanPierre Bonnefoux, who is known for creating spectacular classical ballets including Nutcracker, Cinderella and Peter Pan, is choreographing Dance Theatre’s production. “Sleeping Beauty is the essence of classical ballet, and I believe Charlotteans will enjoy the opulent sets and costumes of this spectacular performance,” said Bonnefoux. The ballet was originally choreographed in 1890 by Marius Petipa, with music composed by Tchaikovsky. “I’m really looking forward to Dance Theatre’s production of Sleeping Beauty,” said dancer Alessandra Ball, currently in her eighth season with the company.
